Q:
Where's the mouse pointer? Long server names?
A:
One of the new ground targeting types that should be added in the upcoming October 15th patch will cause the ability to cast when you stop pressing the ability key, rather than right when you press it. This allows you to hold the key to see the reticule, then lift it up to cast it. It’ll largely solve this problem. I am very much so looking forward to this feature.
Often? I lose it all the time tabbing though enemies that I do not want/cannot attack. It’s driving me nuts sometimes.
But there are some targetting changes in the next release.
I guess this other topic answers my first question (the answer is NO)
Probably my biggest gripe with the game.
You can make it a little bit more visible by activating mouse trails in Windows. It carries over to GW2 – not very well – but a bit.
Other than that, turning off fast cast ground targeting means you get the target circle graticule on ground skills. It’s clumsy having to click twice but it’s better than losing the cursor and not being able to target at all.
I’m still looking for an answer to my second question…
Preachin’ to the choir.
That’s why I don’t use fastcast. I click any aoe skill and the giant green circle tells me exactly where it is.
Another reason why I don’t use it is because imo if you press the skill the moment you need to use it you’re already too late. I like to have my skill ready to pop (so activate aoe, see green circle and wait for the right moment to use it). And if I need to use another skill instead, I already know where the cursor is.
I’m still looking for an answer to my second question…
The answer is no, unfortunately.

The real skill in GW2 is figuring out where your mouse pointer is.

I play an Elementalist. It is very important that I know where my mouse pointer is at all times for ground targeting. Whenever things get really massively intense in wvw I always end up losing my mouse pointer and it is annoying. I was also hoping there was a way to make the pointer stand out more and pulse or something.
It is desperately needed, and the lack of it more than a year since release makes me seriously doubt the devs play their own game much. How can the mouse pointer ever not be lost in the heat of the battle?
“Server Name Bronze Invader [Guild]” should be abbreviated to “SN Invader [Guild]” until you select them, at which point then we get the full title. Beasts should just be “SN Beast” with a slightly different tone of transparent red.

It’s so simple and obvious. We can all see these glaring problems and think of half-a-dozen fixes. It beats me why Anet are so unwilling to listen.
Long, pointless player names.
Beast names nearly indistinguishable from players.
Dead bodies names ditto
Blinding particle effects that hide the mouse cursor and sometimes everything else.
That’s just the visual stuff – don’t get me started on the combat system and command structure.
