Which has more utility in WvW ?

Play whichever you like. Both engi and ranger have viable builds that can work in group set ups. What makes them both kind of useless is because any other class can do whatever it is they’re trying to do better, faster, and/or easier (except Entangle, maybe).
Anyone who says all an engineer can so is drop turrets is seriously dumb and you should never listen to them about any class in the game. Do what you want to do, play them both and see what you like. You can be whatever you want to be, I believe in you.
The devs don’t care about WvW so I’m gonna kill players in PvE!
Engineer or Ranger ?
If i’d have to choose, i’d say Engi.
More utility (can easily pack alone various combo fields and 3+ blast finisher), best long aoe ranged weaponset (grenadier – decent dmg/pressure/CC all at 1500 range), and overall better versatility.
Ranger is probably a bit more desiderable in a small scale/roaming setting, but Engi isn’t bad there either.
Most used: Guard/Mes/War/Nec/Ele.
Yes, i use 5 chars at time. Because REASONS.
Both of them are more suited to roam builds than to group builds.
As for team utility, besides the fact, that both fall short of it, the ranger offers an overpowered water field, which passively grants regen and cleanses conditions. The main issue with these classes is, that they get utterly destroyed by Retaliation, which, given the abundance of light fields and blast finishers in huge fights, is omnipresent.
Solo play is fine, and as a matter of fact, they are strong in small group play. But anything with more than 20 players involved will demote them to garbage tier.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
Both classes are among the worst in WvW, along with thief. I tend to only run small groups or solo with ranger, engineer and thief. All 3 are decent in small scale fights, but as soon as you start talking zerg or guild you are better off rolling something else.
Small class roaming (preferrably solo): Ranger!
With a decent build, you can easily capture camps in 30-60 seconds. And since ranger has some nice mobility (GS#3, Signet of the Hunt, Warhorn#5), you’ll be running from camp to camp, keeping the recapping zerg well behind you..

entangle is bugged.
Rangers, after the last patch, atleast in small groups, can provide perma regeneration and swiftness.
Engis however is just hands down awesome at removing siege up at the walls.

I play engineer as main…
just tried guardian because I wanted a bit more melee… which I noticed was totally boring(also only buffing others is boring and getting hit by melee guys that kite you where even your defensive abilities don’t help cause they are used pretty fast and then all on CD).
I’ll definitely also try the ranger in WvW which also seems like a class that can be made tanky and with a tanky pet(someone mentioned the camps – must be easy cause of a tanky pet?) Also he is ranged.
Engineer is fine. Also in small groups… they have a lot of different stuff. If you want you can have tons of knockback(or more “launch” like most of the stuff called correctly). If someone is not using stability or stun breaker you could perma CC him all by yourself(but then of course using a lot of that skills and not being able to take other stuff in that slots).
Also fun: Push a downed enemy from a hill to death by falling. Faster than finishing.
Utility? As in value to a group?
The ranger has only one thing… healing well. the only class with less to offer a group is the thief. The next best is an engineer rounding out the bottom 3 classes for zerg play.
I’d suggest looking elsewhere if you’re serious about a utility class.
Just a little warning to those who want to play ranger; It is more skill based then the other professions. Except thief maybe.
You WILL do less damage, WILL be squishy, WILL have issues with immobilize and WILL get stomped when facing more then 2 people.

VERY inspirational. Thanks XD

If you can outrun my thief doing a supply run without using portals then I would agree with you however I bet you can’t.

I bet you a warrior could do it just as quickly. You know, the one that is awesome on the frontline of a zerg!
I am going to assume that utility in this context means being able to perform several useful functions. Unfortunately that description kinda leaves out both of these classes. I suppose the engi would have a tad more as they do have fields and can clear siege but both classes are utility-light at least in this context.
If you are asking what is the most useful, the ranger heal is ridiculously good since they can keep players alive while sieging.
