Whispers form other servers?
Man. Nothing new. There are spies, sabotagers, supply burners, lolclaimers, disinformers.
And believe me they use teamspeak or similar, not whispers.
You can whisper person from other world by finding out his acc name from report window. And cross-world whispers are used mostly to communicate between friends that for some reason can’t get on same server so no disabling it.
its not hard to do.
As far as i can tell what they do is click on the player and report.
then they get the name they can type in and whisper.
Tbh anet should put a block on this imo.
I’m talking about shown the name when you click report.
A block won’t solve anything, plus this would disable talking to friends on other servers..
It’s part of the fun imo, no need to change it.
Just show names in WvW and be done with it. This stuff is happening anyway.
TBH i love this ability. Was camping out in EB jump puzzle with a group. No siege, just using the in game traps and then engaging after they were hit by the logs off the maze. Outside of all the whines about camping, there were some whispers about some epic fights and great 3 on 3’s and what not.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Knowing who you are fighting and having a more personal rivalry with them makes pvp much more fun.
BTW its super easy to get names, no hack/cheat needed!
I was even in a Party with people from the other server, was fun
Ally skills didn’t affect those from the other server though.
I feel like the ability to get people’s names through the report function was an oversight by ANet and they should probably fix it for this reason. If they want us to be able to talk to each other in WvW then put that ability in … don’t leave a weird loophole to do so.
That said, I admit I’ve had some decent conversations about builds with rivals from other servers. I’ve also let sub-80s & PvE’ers pass who have messaged me (and asked nicely), that were looking to get a vista or do a jump puzzle that I was at. No real glory in me stomping a level 30 trying to get achievements and port out, IMHO. They weren’t actually competition for anything and I’d feel like a playground bully lol.
Sadly, I’ve also had people wig out on me and sling insults, have meltdowns, and overall just be poor sports about WvW.

I’m still on the brink about the anonymity of WvW, but I really don’t want to deal with the MMO kittens that plague every game. As for now, I think I like it anonymous. Fix this oversight.
When the general playerbase has matured enough to handle it, then perhaps remove anonymity.

I agree it’s more difficult to form a bond/rivalry with competing servers when the names are anonymous. One of my favorite parts of PvP in other games is the “friendly” trash talking. People who are going to stalk/harass will find ways to do it regardless of whether the names are hidden in the UI. I would vote to see names of opponents, as long as it won’t worsen the culling/rendering issues we have currently.
I love that feature, met great people through it. If I get beaten bad, I’d whisper them and ask them their build/tactic. I haven’t had one bad apple yet, most people would e-mail me and share their information/build.
I’ve gotten a lot of people to go 1 on 1 with me to downed stage to practice this tactic or that, not one has ever Finished me or I them. We just let each other revive back up and go at it again. Great sportsmanship.
Once I made friends with my enemies from the other servers, it’s great to run into them kill them or die to them and then whisper a “grats” to them. Makes the game much more fun for me.
Like Varg said, people who want to harass you, they will do it other ways (aka dance on your dead face)

Or people could master the use of the block feature. How is blocking an enemy any different then blocking the many trolling stupids that clog our chat channels on every map?
The spying argument also holds no water, if they are that serious about spying why wouldn’t they just use voice chat?
In RIFT in order to talk to the enemy you had to log out, roll a character on the opposite faction, log in and then you could whisper them. I once killed this husband and wife pair, he rolled an alt and came to tell me how bad I was, you know the normal drivel. While pretending to be a Chinese gold farmer via whispers, I saw his wife sitting by herself in a quest hub. I ran in and killed her again. His reaction at that moment was likely the most entertaining point of my time with RIFT. I could likely have gotten him banned for what he spewed out, but it was so obviously an act of rage at an epic level that all I could do was laugh… for like two days.

Leave it in. I love messaging people who give me great 1 on 1 fights.
I’ve messaged people who I was impressed with, who gave me a proper butt whoopin. I’ve also whispered people to go off and 1v1 duel somewhere, which most have accepted and it’s been good fun. I’ve also been whispered by people who bring on the ETOUGH when they are upset with tactics I use (I’m a dirty mesmer). Had one just today tell me I made a big mistake in attacking him and that he’s put a hit out on me and that I should go read the forums about what kind of trouble I’m in (never found the post, and be blocked me right after whispering me, so I have no idea). I did whisper one fail-ele who I beat in a 2v1 (2 of them) when she came back to dance on my corpse after 5-6 of her friends took me down, calling her sad. She replied that my whispering her was hacking, that I would be reported, and that she’s personally gotten 8 people banned for whispering. I LOLed.

I have so many people on my friends list from Kain and Ferg (since Devona has been against them for weeks).. I love this feature and set up skirmishes a lot with it, and give a GG or w/e for 1v1’s. Never have I had a bad experience with me /w tons of server rivals and often receiving them as well. One guy started to wig out on me at first but we talked for a few minutes and it turned out he was having a bad day and we became friends.. Just let us see names already and be done with it.
BTW I’ve also received several whispers from people who grabbed my account name off the forum after I posted in our serverVserverVserver topic. So what’s the difference?

I don’t think that anonymity was a good idea. Of course, there will be jerks, and teens on a power drift, but you have those everywhere else. It’s not like they are saving you from anything. As others have mentioned, being able to communicate with them is actually a good thing. Those you don’t like… well, that’s what the block list is for.
Wow talk about raising an old (and very outdated topic) up to the top haha

This as well. But some times it’s spies trying to figure out where guilds/zergs are going.

It’s even weirder when you keep getting invited to cross server groups (European server) and they talk in another language to you.
