I was in the middle of a keep siege earlier when it dawned on me. Why even WvW?

Is it really fun to waste 1 or 2 hours slowly siege a keep only to fail? Where are the incentives for anyone to try that again, ever? What’s the point of playing musical chairs with camps when there’s very little use for supplies in outmanned maps? Why should two armies fight one another when it’s just a lot of repair bills and a total lack of progress?

If you think about it, everything incentive WvW has to offer can be found elsewhere in much more rewarding forms. There are only few players who will spend hours on end taking potshots at the opposing army on either side of a keep wall without getting many kills or rewards.

The central issue surrounding WvW is that of incentive. If your zerg is devoting resource to take an objective, failing to do so will yield nothing. If you apply game theory to the problem, the best course of action becomes doing nothing. After all, if you put the efforts elsewhere for smaller and target with better rate of success, the potential of your yield increases.

What Anet can do is to create installment rewards for larger objectives that will provide some form of incentive to keep playing even if things go south.

I WvW for the sake of having fun. It is my favorite part of this game with RP a close second. I guess I do not need a carrot dangling in front of me to enjoy myself, but if they wanted to add more rewards for WvW I am all for it.

I myself still find a lot of fun in group style WvW, especially when our smaller team can take out a larger team. Otherwise, I agree with you. WvW does need some more incentives. I think that the average player in WvW doesn’t study the game as much as some of the players in my guild, or take their gameplay as seriously. The average player wants to get on, have fun, and feel a sense of accomplishment. WvW as it stands doesn’t have much of a sense of accomplishment other than the pride in how one’s server is doing in the current match up (or in our case how well our small group does in a skirmish against a more populated enemy).

Hopefully the changes in February will address this.

The incentive? You mean like loot or money rewards? Sounds like you are playing the wrong game. The incentive is helping your server win. If that isn’t incentive enough you never played DAOC and got your start playing that other game.

It’d be cool if there was a greater incentive, like a special PvE zone that only the winning server could access (or maybe the other teams can still access it, but the team in the lead has support from NPC guards XD) . I’ve heard several ideas like this one tossed around by others, I just hope we see some kind of update like this come February.

The incentive is the Adrenalin rush you get, the sweat that pours from your brow after a long heated battle at the top of a tower, the banter in Team Speak/Vent with your fellow WvW’ers, the stories of epic encounters that are retold again and again for the next 10 years (Yep we still remember some of the most epic fights in WvW in other games (PotBS, EvE, WAR, Planetside, etc)
Fighting against a human opponent, one that is unpredictable and capable of doing anything… he did what?? that makes no sense!!! …A computer would have never had done that!
Adapting to any situation, fighting unmeasurable odds, coming up with new ideas and tactics.

WvW is about the memories, challenges and friends you make along the way. The glory of battle against a human opponent is all the incentive I will ever need

p.s. Why jump out of a plane? I belive you get no physical reward for skydiving

DAOC had realm ranks, which were a pretty strong incentive to keep playing.

Personally, I detest the zerg battles that inevitably come with keep sieges. I do, however, thoroughly enjoy roaming in a small group, fighting other small groups. That is enough fun that I don’t even miss a progression. As a general rule, I, and those I run with completely ignore objectives, we’re there simply for the PvP.

Because its more fun to kill a real player than some mindless Npc. First, it’s more challenging, and second, it’s satisfying knowing that guy you just killed now has to shell out coin to repair his armor.

I head shot this guy in CoD 5 times in the last match and now this new map has started and he’s back again and I haven’t gotten anything for my efforts. Why even FPS in the first place, may as well do nothing.

I also don’t like it when he shoots me, IW should reward me for being shot.
