Why am I so weak?
Hi Boldor, it’s tough when you first get into wvw. PvP experiences are very challenging to get accustomed to when your used to PvE. What you were facing in both instances were likely glass cannon builds. Opposite to you, they have very low health but high power and precision. As an example, my thief only has 10900 (approx.) compared to your 25k.
The thief was using their number 5 skill when using two daggers ‘Cloak and Dagger’. Upon a successful hit, the thief inflicts 3 stacks of vulnerability on you and cloaks for 3 seconds, being able to unleash a strong dagger attack coming out of invisibility. Against a thief in this instance (and other glass cannons), your best method of defense is to dodge as many of their attacks as you can. These builds rely strongly on not getting into prolonged fights, as they don’t have the health to survive sustained hits. It is also important to put on the pressure when they begin to get into trouble to prevent them from healing and cloaking again to either escape or reposition.
In terms of how to improve in general for wvw, I would suggest you try to avoid fighting alone. Try to find yourself a pick up group, or join the ‘zergs’ (large groups of roaming people to practice a bit when you have allies nearby. Important suggestions I can give for wvw group combat is:
1) Watch your health, your of better use to your team alive then downed/dead. If your getting low on health, retreat to the back of your group to disengage and heal.
2) Watch for downed allies, if you see allies that are downed and you wouldn’t get obliterated trying to heal them, then heal them. A downed ally can be brought up in seconds, which is very much not the case for a dead ally. Keeping your numbers up is important in preventing the enemy from getting the upper hand in group battles.
3) Scan around you a lot, people like to flank and back attack as much as possible in single or group combat. You need to be check your sides and back often (you being yourself in 1v1 or the group for group engagements). If you see enemies moving on your sides, let the group know as quickly as possible.
4) Use/avoid siege depending on whether allies or enemies are using them, a few well placed siege will cream groups if they aren’t ready for it.
5) Watch for aoe circles, most damage will come in the form of aoe attacks (due to siege and player aoe to attack groups). Make sure your always checking your feet for enemy aoe circles (shown as a red line forming a circle on the ground) and evacuate it ASAP.
Hope that helps, good luck in WvW.
It may help to mention what class you play, your armor, runes, sigil, traits and utility skills you use.
First of all, my only neg of the game so far, being forced into WvW to get 100% completion, which I just need to point out, there will be about 20 areas of interest left to discover even after I have done all the main map and WvW ones? Not sure where the 20 of so points of interest are?
This is why PvE and PvP do not mix.
For help we would need to know class.
This happened to most of us when we enter www the first time. Later you will be the one who ninja drop others lolz in 6 seconds. Do not worry too much about it now.

Considering his talk about being reliant on melee combat I would venture a guess that he’s a warrior or guardian.
@OP: If you’re a guardian try spec’ing for symbols healing and try eiter a GS, Hammer, or mace/shield for primary weapon and a staff for your offhand weapon. You should be far more durable and in the case of a thief you’ll have decent cone or aoe effects to keep the pressure on him even when he goes into stealth.
If you’re a warrior you’re just going to need to work your kitten off regardless of build to learn to survive 1v1’s when jumped.

Braxxus , i don’t think he is a Guardian…Since he just told that he has 25k hp :P

My bunker guard has 24k and some change. Usually I’ll round up, I figure he might do the same. I don’t say my thief has 19, 554 hp, I just call it 20k.

Hmm…I didn’t know that guards can have that much hp O_O ok than :P

If you get all the poi’s on the 4 WvW maps and on the main maps you will be done, there are no extras and dungeon poi’s don’t count towards the total.
Anyway, my main point, why the heck are people so strong in WvW? I just had a guy kill me in (no joke) and this was a 1v1 – 6 seconds flat. I have 25K Vitality, and even have exotic trinklets on me. How is this possible because it’s annoying as hell. I didn’t manage to land more than a few slashes with my sword, which I’m finding quite hard for PVP combat?
Everyone else pretty much kills me in 1v1 too, I can compete with most but that last guy was invincible. I also came across this cloaking guy who just danced circles around me hitting, cloaking, hitting cloaking and I’m half dead before I can figure out how to hit him.
Welcome to the WvW thief lol, tip 1 is to not stand still. Thieves have an advantage in WvW because of the culling issues, their class exploits it whether they want to or not, the player has no control over it (short of not using stealth skills, which no thief would do for good reason)
Mapping the WvW zones is a giant pain and isn’t just a case of running round the maps grabbing the vista’s/ poi’s/ skil points. If a poi/ vista is inside a tower/ keep your server needs to control it before you can get it.
This becomes especially difficult on Eternal Battlegrounds, as its usually one server in each tier that dominates so the bases don’t rotate fully (In T1, I have a feeling it will be a while before SoS rotate to a different base other than the SW corner, making it very hard to 100% the map)
If you are only in WvW specifically to map the best thing you can do is when you first zone into WvW, open the map and plan ahead which poi’s vistas you are going to go for and just run straight to them without stopping to fight. Either that or locate the zerg and run with them, picking up the points as you come across them.
Bolder:
PvP and PvE are two completely separate animals. PvP presents dynamic opponents in that they are unpredictable, constantly changing, and use tactics that are not programmed into the game. PvP requires a different approach to combat than that of PvE. And like Berkut said, fighting alone in WvW can be a bad idea. Try researching PvP builds, guides, and videos related to your class type. Try out different Trait builds and see what works most effectively for you. You do not need full exotic gear to be effective in PvP. However, having exotic level gear stated for the specific build you want to use will grant you better stats and make you all the more effective. Also like Berkut said, find a group to travel with while you are in WvW. You are far stronger in numbers than you ever are by yourself. Lastly, listen to and follow your commanders. You can open your map while in WvW, and you should be able to see the blue commander icons. Many of the commanders have extensive experience in WvW, and they should be able to lead you into possible victory.

Sounds like a warrior with a GS to me.
My friend , if you think you die really fast ,i would suggest that you go full power/toughness/vitality gears and accessory.
You may not hit very hard in these set up , but you will survive longer to experience the momentum of fights and learn what to do in future encounters of similar specific class or situations .
Anyway that’s how most of us learn how to kill . Get killed countless time and learn.
~We Are Deadly When Required~
Probably a glass cannon war. Used to face rolling Pve. Ran into a buzz saw. Not usually this bad op. group up and learn the ropes.
