Why can't we see players names in WvW?
Because you can whisper across servers.

then why not just make it so that the whisper system when used cross server, only works cross server if you include the 4 digit tag??
I think a large part of it is to prevent harassment. If you can see what peoples names are you can start spamming them during WvW to distract them. For example, I was in tkitten jumping puzzle a few days ago and someone cross server invited me to their party(not certain how exactly) to tell me that his friends were going to come kill me because other people on my server decided to gank them. Now this whole time I was just like “omg you can invite people cross-server?” so I was a bit distracted but I might have found him annoying if I wasn’t in shock already. I could have just left party in that scenario but get a guild of 20+ griefers spamming one person and it would be a lot harder to deal with.
not sure if i’m allowed to tell (if not pls just delete it, mod) but right now you actually can rightclick enemies avatar and hit the “report” button. then you will get a popup asking if you really wanna report <accountname>. knowing his account name allows you to whisper or invite him to a party etc…

Back in beta, you could right click them and just PM them straight from there. I would PM people to stop hitting me. xD

Because it defeats the point of servers being mostly a WvW divider and nothing else.
