Its not like they “Earned” it via PvP they bought a book for 100g which they probably bought with gems.

Why do people follow the “Battle” markers around in WvW?

While yea, Commanders laid down 100g and could possibly have zero experience, do you really think the average player isn’t going to follow them? Even a bad Commander can rally a bunch of casual players to do something while organized guilds do the heavy lifting.

Commander = Zerg = Badges

Not sure why people wouldn’t follow the Commander, regardless. Even if he sucks, the zerg will get kills, and you get fun. Or run off solo and cap Sentry points. Your call.

Commanders serve their purpose for the battlefield. The icon is perfect for getting random people to rally on.

Not everyone should be following a commander – but until you understand why and what else you should be doing, you should be following a commander.

I’m incredibly disappointed by the number of proper, serious responses to this inane question. I really expected nothing but trolling and now I feel dumb.

Shame on you, WvW community for being good people.

Sky hit the nail on the head.

i’d like to add, some people are commanders and have the 100g because there is a whole army of people who dedicated some time and chipped in to buy it for that person because they value that person’s leadership.

don’t ever just assume its some rich kid. it may very well be an old gamer with a proven history and a community backing him or her, from the people i’ve talked to this is usually the case.

Commanders dont need to be good its enough if they run to an enemy tower and hit the door, the zerg that follows them does the rest.

Because it lets pugs like me know where people are so i can go help.

Running around by yourself looking for something to do doesn’t help much.

We have some good commanders on SBI, and when none of them are on, it’s really tough getting people to go anywhere and do anything. Lots of little groups, patrols, scouting and so on- but when one of our commanders logged on you could almost hear the collective server-wide sigh of relief that we had an icon to chase around. It’s not always a fail commander with that icon. At least one of our commanders I’ve been following for years in a couple of different games – and he’s kitten pro as all kitten. (kittens added for clarity, and entertainment – no kittens harmed during this post.)
