Why does gear matter in WvWvW?
Without gear 80s would have nothing to work toward…that’s the reason I play MMO’s, I enjoy getting higher numbers.

sPvP is like a sport, WvW is like a war. Not all soldiers are equal, and they don’t have to be. I haven’t noticed any issues with this.
Gear turns it into little more than a competitive spreadsheet.
If everyone was even there would be a lot less going back and forth and my stalemates IMO.
Seeing as how quite a few guilds have a big PvE influence, including crafting and trading on the TP, generating gold to then infuse into Siege weapons in WvW, it makes sense that the gear matters. It’s not a separate system from the actual game as sPvP is, it’s an extension of your server as a whole. It means even the guys donating to the guild bank are helping the server win. And as they win, they become more effective in the PvE pursuits. It’s very well done overall.
I figure it all comes out in the wash. sPvP is about small matches between equally matched teams. WvW is, as the name implies, about entire worlds. Some people will have better gear and some won’t. It’s likely that the numbers are comparable by server.
And while gear makes some difference, it’s a small one compared to some other MMOs. I think the biggest difference is simply being lvl 80 or not.
“Without gear 80s would have nothing to work toward…that’s the reason I play MMO’s, I enjoy getting higher numbers.” Then you’re going to be disappointed once you get your level 80 set. Numbers don’t really go up after that. It’s awesome. No more gear grinding just to compete in PvP.
It kind of sucks not having max gear. But if you manage to kill someone who does… it feels that much more satisfying.

Possibly, I’ve never maxed gear before in a game so who knows what will happen. Maybe a new character? I still enjoy running with my guild in WvW and crushing people.

To be honest, even with max-ish gear (Level 80 crafted exotics) I don’t notice a difference from when I first set foot in WvW. The gear difference is negligible. What matters most is your build and teamwork.
Interesting. On both my necro and warrior is see significant and noticeable differences in numbers before and after exotics.
Unlike SPVP, you can DEFINATELY tell who is geared and who is lower leveled and not. You have to grind PVE gear just to be competitive in WVW.

Not true. I bought 5/6 of my exotics from Orr karma vendors with karma earned strictly through WvW. The only piece left is my helm, which I will buy this week with badges.
Unlike spvp, wvw is inherently unfair. Gear mattering just makes it a bit more unfair.

Good for you. So instead of grinding PVE karma, you grind WVW karma whilst getting trampled by the high level players with exotic gear. Really, congats. So happy for you.

Can’t quote the post above me, but how do you figure WvW is a grind?
I’m having the time of my life out there, and while having this good time, karma is falling like rain. Usually after a weekend’s play I have close to enough to buy 1 42k piece from Orr.
As for being trampled by high level players, the cliched response really is the right one: begins with Learn, ends with Play.
Level matters far, far more than armour. And even wearing masterwork drops before I geared up I was more than able to hold my own.
The truth is out there.
Considering you play play WvW with level 1 I think gear disparities are the least of any WvW problem. Anyway, he difference between a rare set (which can be acquired for just a gold or two) and an exotic set isn’t that great.
Keep in mind that gear scales. My level 15 Guardian in blue and green armor has almost the exact same stats that my level 80 Warrior has in all rare gear.
I think the gear matters in WvW because it was originally aimed at being more casual. I don’t think ArenaNet expected the player reaction to WvW that they got.
I hope we somehow get both options in the future. I’d like to be able to jump on an alt in WvW and not feel like a wimp, but I’d also like all the other stuff in the game to still benefit your time in WvW so things you do while waiting in queue at least have a point.
I hate the sPvP gear system personally. Gear is a way to show your accomplishments. A way to stroke the kitten. This is important in an MMO.
In sPvP, life is bland. Thats the way I see it anyway.
(EDIT) The word I typed got edited, the irony of the situation, is stroke the kitten is just the same as stroke the… word that was edited out but had E in front of it, except the term applies to the opposite sex. Do with this information what you will

Gear does not matter. Feel free to run naked in WvW. All that matters is numbers and knowing when to push. If you push, then the enemy tends to run away, even if they have more people and better gear.
If I may derails this. What do you spend Karma on when fully geared?

spvp gear system !?!? it’s people like you who ruin mmo’s with there carebear whining.. REAL pvpers want to earn there strength and work there way up to being powerful..but whiny casuals just want it all handed on a plate because they suck and just can’t handle the fact they have to earn it.
the fact this game has no duels or no open world pvp areas already pisses me off
