Why does there have to be culling at all?
Why can’t they show a naked/temporary character model before it loads all the info? Or a silhouette, santa claus, a walking stick, anything, atleast SOMETHING.

Which game sent information about 100 other players to all other players ten years ago?
Dark Age of Camelot, to name only one … make it 200-300 players in the early zerg days
To be fair a lot of those early relic runs were slideshows. A lot of fun though.
LoL… This made my day.. haha I’m picturing that now..
The nostalgia that comment triggered was magnificent, wouldn’t you agree? LOL.

Why not just send all information about all players that are in range? This is is almost 2013. Other games did this ten years ago.
In the Tech section a few of the tech whizzes mentioned GW2 was setup to be DirectX9 which does utilize multi core processors very well. DirectX11 would do this game good but it would take a complete rewrite in code something of which is not gonna happen in this game.
There is a culling-system, because there is no CPU/GPU out there capable of rendering 500 no scripted AI peeps, every Lord/NPC and siege warfare/effects going on at once on your screen. And.. who plays no-days at ultra low at 800by600? :)
(me thinks)
At Dayra
It´s the system, which makes Wv3 unplayable sometimes. Not the graphics, you can play it at ultra-low with subsample and you still would have only 15fps (3 server congregation).
It´s either not yet optimized or some parts of the engine/ transfer client/server needs a tweak or two, that is just my guess as a gamer. Wait til April 1st and maybe it will fix the problem ;)
Anyone remember this? :)= (disable the music, yikes…)

I only have rendering problems on my ranger..
But for real rendering seems to only effect me Zerg on Zerg

I miss the daoc lag, I felt psychic when I noticed even a tinge of lag and could predict enemies coming into visible range a good 5-10 seconds before they could be seen. Could tell about how many by the amount of lag too.
OMG yes, and you could pan your camera and get a general direction too.
LOL I miss that game’s RvR.
No culling.
Larger maps with room to roam.
No need to run 500 yards north to turn a cliff corner to run 500 yards south to end up 5 feet from where you just were.
I like WvW, but they need to fix the culling BADLY.
And please put some freaking elbow room in on these maps, my god everything is right on top of each other. When it takes like 2 minutes to run (with speed) from one end of the map all the way to the other, it’s too kitten small.
Now Musty Britches since someone decided Shortbus Rider was offensive… [LoS] [NSP]
Probably because GW2 uses an enhanced version of GW1 game engine (rather than a different new one) which at it’s core have issues handling large amount of people within an area. Culling is probably added in to help the game engine handle the mass of people.
Getting to the crux of the matter, WvW doesn’t make Anet any money. Unless all the commanders are buying their icons with gold bought from Anet’s cash shop, what financial incentive do they have to really fix anything in WvW?
At this point in the game it’s all about making money in the cash shop to keep the game running and turn a profit. Therefore things in the game that make money will be top priority, i.e. special events, with cash shop tie-ins. Fixing things isn’t exactly a high priority if you haven’t noticed. Some events, etc. that have been broken since beta still haven’t been fixed.
Culling isn’t just a problem in WvW either. As people have noted it occurs in LA and also in various parts of the PvE world. Whether it’s a hardware or software problem, or probably both, on Anet’s end, it doesn’t seem like something that is going to be dealt with any time soon, if at all.
I can’t imagine it’s bandwidth, honestly. I think they are limiting graphics to avoid slideshow mode. These games really don’t take up huge amounts of bandwidth compared to other things we do on the internet these days. (Unless this game specifically is doing something wrong/weird?)
