Guild Wars 2

So i was on a NA account last night when there was a server message saying EU servers is going down for a few hours. NA was not offline only EU.
I know there was maintenance work done but not a single word about why that i can find. If this was PvE it would be communicated high and low on every forum and other channels but so far i found nothing about this, so could we at least get a message about what was going on and what is wrong with EU that is working fine on NA?

EU and NA servers are hosted in different geographical locations and I assume by different companies. So what affects one may not affect the other.

Maybe it was to sort out the terrible lag issues EU has been having for months…
