Heh I love them, they make me smile and give me a good laugh. I like to share them sometimes. It is pretty funny when someone runs a cheap gimmicky build like a stealth spamming condi mes/thief gets mad that they get killed and decides to send angry messages to someone.

The only time I get a bit annoyed is that when I am roaming with my guildys (2-5) it is always me (s/d thief) that gets the whispers. The whispers them self’s I couldn’t care but why me all of the time ; (

Indeed! Salty whispers in WvW is an absolute highlight in the game for me. It needs to be savored like a fine wine.
I usually just respond with either of these sentences before I put them on ignore:

I almost never get salty whispers and i roam alot. Many players also deserve the unpleasant whispers they get (intentional duel disrupters, condi mesmers, troll corpsjumpers , … )

Being able to whisper enemies is verry handy to ask for duels/advice , …. .
This is not something anet should change imo. (unless they make communicating to enemies easier)
To be honest, I’d just simply display everyone’s name. Still, funny that this hasn’t been fixed in all this time.
As far as whisperers go, they pretty much found the best way to show you that you “won”. Actually, going even further and therefor blocking you before you can reply to their message shows how scared they are they might lose that (verbal) battle as well.
I agree with Henry. I’d display names too and allow chat between foes. In my early days of WvW I had more enemy friends than from my own server. Just ignored insults or rude people as I do in real life. Offense is taken not given. You choose how to react. Nobody forbids you to use any type of build or fighting style in WvW. It’s fun. One time you win another you loose. It’s a game. Good game with plenty nice people in it.
Whispering threads have appeared in varying section of the forum. This isn’t just a WvW issue, whispering logic and options should be expanded so that people have options to block whispers from people they don’t know.
Image different check blocks: (Open to most restricted)
Allow whisper from All
Allow whisper from Team
Allow whisper from Server
Allow whisper from Guild
Allow whisper from Friends
This would also block for example gold sellers but still allow you to receive whispers from people you know, or if you like to leave it open to all if that’s your choice. System could also still work in conjunction with blocked lists as well.
One thing I’d like to see though is that if you block someone, you are also blocked. So you have to remove the block before you can actually whisper. The 1-way-whisper is what really gets me.

It cannot be an intended feature for one to use such a roundabout measure to whisper someone.
Personally, I think they should just allow whispering across servers. Believe it or not, not every enemy player whispers you because they’re to talk trash. Once my guildie killed an afk person and they got a whisper of something like “lol ouch”. There are also people, mainly duelers, that would like to fight you again but something else interrupted.
However, using the block feature or contact feature to stalk someone isn’t justifiable. Blocking someone should completely remove them from your sights and it should be mutual. You obviously shouldn’t be able to block someone and still talk to them. Otherwise, what does block even mean?

In spvp you can talk to anyone you wish, what is the difference?
The difference is that WvWvW was suppose to siphon off PvE players into sPvP. Get them in using map completion, enemies have NPC like names so not too personal and scary, hope that they enjoy the PvP enough to stay awhile but annoyed by imbalances enough to head to sPvP. Esports! But then GvGs happened soo…>.>
At its heart, Gw2 just seems to have carved a role for casual players, and the anonymity of WvW with the lack of cross team chat tends to be good for that kind of thing. And of course it is blob friendly so a lot of insecurities and badness tend to melt away when you can hide in the crowd. I understand that’s not probably desirable for the competitive minded, but then again this is a game where people get frustrated over slightly hard pve content so it might just be for the best.
Sure, you can make fun of the game for being “carebear” and whatnot, but it really does has its benefits. Not all of us want to do with some wannabe esports brats that found whatever on metabattle this month.
Yea, I don’t think Anet ever intended the bridge to PvP to be better for many than the actual PvP, but it is what it is. It also allows for people that are umm… mechanically challenged to contribute to a pvp enviornment through scouting, maintenance, and of course, siege that certainly wouldn’t show up in an actual pvp match. Then again, I’d probably cry if you had to rely on me to hit something with a treb or mortar so maybe I shouldn’t talk so big….

I get a good amount of whispers over a day. Being a +1 specialist I often end up rotating on to 1v1 duels. Judging from the whispers, duelers are probably the saltiest players in guild wars 2.
I think the restriction on whisper in WvW for opponents is stupid tbh. We have been playing full loot open world no safe zone games for decades with being able to talk freely to opponents. In games where they attempt to restrict communications, all that happens is players go outside game to talk anyhow and stop using in game chat all together. In fact in many games, you got gkicked if you used in game chat at all due to it being bad.
The issue is people can’t handle opponents knowing who they are or talking to them? REALLY? They can block whoever they don’t want to hear from, but in the past most players communicated normally. These communications are part of what builds rivalries, friendships, and create reputation in games. That was what made the old school MMOS communities so much more immersed. You knew who to watch out for on the battlefield and who you wanted to fight easily and built up reputations for good or worse and the games were better like that tbh.
This system is just too carebeary " oh no someone can talk to me I killed" lame nonsense.. really. I still think it funny that people get mad when they get killed at all, like that is what you expect to happen in a PvP zone.
In addition, everyone realizes rival players talk outside the game right?

Eh, I like the anonymity in wvw. I’d be fairly shocked if I got an enemy whisper there, I still thought that wasn’t possible. It would also baffle me, I mean fair enough to ask about the build a person was using but just to whine about losing in a deliberately unfair setting? Or I suppose similarly, to gloat over a win? Weird.
Edit I don’t think I’d support a change to just let everyone whisper everyone else more easily, but I like that there is a convoluted option to do it. It cuts out casual unpleasantness but means that people who are willing to put a bit more effort into a conversation or friendship still can. Besides, if you get an unpleasant message it means that the person who sent it went that extra couple of steps for the privilege of messaging you.

Most messages I receive from opponents are not unpleasant. Have made friends that way as well as have them change servers to join my guild. LOL
I think much of how things go is how people respond and get along with one another. Many messages are comments on it being a good fight, and normal banter one would expect from any sports match that you would receive if were in person.

I hope they don’t get rid of whispers just because a few people are too overly sensitive to handle criticism. The majority of my friends in game a from enemy servers. I’ve met alot of cool people by roaming around. Yeah, there’s alot of idiots, but you can just block them. The majority of people that whisper me are usually nice and its usually just stuff like “gf” “wanna duel eachother without other people around?” and stuff like that.
I’d actually prefer they display enemy names and make it easier to talk to people on enemy servers. I see no reason why they shouldn’t be able to see our /say anyway. They shouldn’t restrict communication just because of a few immature kittens that cant play nice with eachother. That isn’t the ONLY way to whisper people. Enemy players have been joining the parties on other servers as well, and most have many enemy players on their friends lists already from playing multiple servers and know who everyone is anyhow. Not to mention asking one of their friends on the other team to tell them the persons name..
All of that is a bit absurd I think to even mess with since it is a futile effort regardless. I do not see why anyone thinks players should not be able to communicate on a PvP game as they do on every other PvP game they have been for years. Even funnier, is many of the guilds here have played against many of the other guilds here from other games and they play against each other on this game and others and communicate openly already. This “false sense of carebearing” is a bit ridiculous tbh, it is MUCH overkill.
When I was competing with other teams my entire life no matter of whether it was gymnastics or Mortal Kombat, or Red Alert I was never prevented from talking to my opponents, we were instead encouraged to do so. Even the idea that people should not talk to each other is what I find ridiculous.
Why is it people can talk outside of game and on every other game but this one feels a need to attempt to restrict it in some awkward way because people are afraid people will talk to them? if they talk to you and you dont want them to just block them. the end. Why impose that upon everyone else who is perfectly comfortable with " good sportsmanship?" It is nice to be able to tell people they had a good fight, many do this already just not as easy with these silly obstacles that just make it more of pain to do instead.

I don’t get whispers very often and fortunately it’s mostly people saying thanks for a good fight, but not always. Couple of days ago I was called an idiot.
The thief I fought said he crashed to desktop. What I think he meant was that he accidentally tabbed out, cause he was still there to be stomped. I didn’t notice anything during the fight, but obviously I should know when people mess up like that and stop hitting them. :p
I’ll be honest, the only time I do a Salty Whisper is when the enemy player Tbags me, and it’s a bad day for me, I mean c’mon show a little respect people and don’t be an rude with that nonsense, because it is a sign of Disrespect and ignorance. Or I just report them and if needed explain why.
