World ranks
That’s crazy. I had no idea the ranks went up that high. I can’t imagine anyone hitting those top ranks ever.
If I still play this game a year from now at this rate, I will have around rank 3000+. So meaning I would hit max rank in 3-4 years which ain’t that abnormal.

I am rank 32 with my highest character, so this rate I will be top rank, well, never. Not that I think I should be when keep playing 5 different characters in WvW
WXP ranks are definitely anti-alt.
Only problem is viability of alts is really one of the only things WvW has going for it. WvW gear and progression are just terrible compared to the competition (current and future).
The more Anet makes WvW anti-alt, the more it will drive their customers to the competitors who do gear and progression better.
As always, the fundamental problem is Anet doesn’t know if WvW is supposed to be a casual or hardcore game mode.
Am I the only one thinking that the naming system is stupid? You go all the way from ‘Invader’ thru ‘Colonel’ and ‘General’ and right to ‘Legend’, then… you become an ‘Invader’ again (albeit a ‘bronze’ one). Greeaaat. That sounds all-powerful, not. I can’t wait to work my way up to the coolest title ever only to go back to the lowest.
Why on earth, if they wanted to do the bronze/silver/gold thing, didn’t they just put esentially the three colours of name in the same category; so bronze Knight > silver Knight > Gold Knight > Platinum Knight etc etc BEFORE you get to beign a Major?
This would also ease confusion in knowing at a quick glance how ranked your opponent is. See a bronze invader, in a flash think it’s a regular one and that it’s a newb, when in fact they are rank 150!
Seriously Anet, switch it around!!

+1 for you!
Anet’s biggest problem: they never consult. At least, that is how it appears. Everything is done ins secret, excluding the community.
Silly silly elitist mentality…

Because with this system they can add ranks without touching the existing ones, in the other way you propose they should modify the entire ranking system each time they add a rank.

I posted this in suggestions, but never hurts to share an idea:
The Bronze, Silver, Gold system waters down the “Legend” concept in the game. It is far too easy to become a “Legend” currently and after a player gets it they get demoted in a sense a bit later to Bronze Infantry. Doesn’t work very well in my opinion.
Below is a suggested starting point. I think the community could modify it and create a fantastic list:
00 Initiate
05 Recruit
10 Cadet
20 Invader
30 Footman
40 Journeyman
50 Assaulter
60 Vanquisher
70 Raider
80 Scout
100 Guardsman
120 Soldier
140 Trooper
170 Crusader
200 Knight
250 Veteran
300 Commando
400 Sergeant
500 Master Sergeant
600 Captain
700 Major
800 Colonel
1000 Brigadier
1200 General
1400 Champion
1700 Grand Champion
2000 Legend
By stretching out the levels as a player progresses, a Legend title will likely be held by those that put in hundreds of hours of WvW play. This change would make the title far more meaningful.

This is indeed why the system is built as it is. It is also intended to last for a very, very long time. Beyond that, we are going to be continuing to increase the rate at which you gain those ranks.

Make ranks account bound already.

Why are you even concerned with ranks that high? Currently there are only ~1636 possible points that could be spent…9,945 is quite the ways off…plus the point of not being able to reset them shows they want you to pick trait lines and build your individual character’s roll. Not just have everything…
Edit: I was wrong, the wiki says its only 1150 points to unlock all upgrades…

This is all sort of a moot point isn’t it? No one can see your rank, enemies see you, but they don’t know it’s “you” who has that rank. Your allies can’t see your rank either.

Tip: turn on the option for something like “display all enemy nameplates” in the options menu. It will help you pick out enemies from very far away, and you will see “X Server Invader/Recruit/etc.” to get a judge of the person’s ability.
Only thing I’m annoyed by is that the wxp is not account bound. That is all.
Why are world ranks not account bound? I’m almost more surprised that sPvP is account bound but WvW isn’t, because in WvW your profession’s role is more homogenized due to the massive scale of objectives and siege weaponry, whereas in sPvP your profession is very important.
In other words, you can be almost equally effective in WvW as an experienced level 80 Necromancer or a newbie level 80 Mesmer, as long as you are a veteran WvW player. Whereas in sPvP, just because you are a veteran sPvP player does not mean you are going to be good on a newbie level 80 Mesmer if you’ve never touched the profession before.
Anyway, rambling aside, just make WvW account bound. You’ll encourage people to mix it up and not get burned out.

I’m actually inclined to agree with making it account bound. I just wonder how much behind the scenes work would need to be done to do that… it could be that making it character bound had a much smaller overall ripple effect in the system with regards to coding.

I assume you mean the naming system by saying this and have a question I want to ask.
Why are ranks not account wide? I personally don’t like going on my alts in WvW because on my main i’m rank 100+ and I feel accomplished by heading farther into the ranks rather than going on my alt and hitting rank 40 and feeling the whole “been there done that” feeling. I see no reason why ranks should not be account wide.

I really liked this description.
However, I can also see the interpretation the other way around. If WVW is as you say “due to the massive scale of objectives and siege weaponry [class matters less]”, then being able to pick different skill tracks on different characters is what would result in ‘mixing it up and not getting burned out’. Where in s/tpvp, class is the only thing you can change. If it was account bound, you would play wvw fundamentally the same on all your chars? That I don’t know.
Being an alt-aholic myself, I would like account bound because I don’t play enough to reach that “mixing it up” point with traits. Probably takes 40+ points to really make a difference in how you play, to get deep into a particular trait line? And even at that point, are people really going to make differentiating build decisions? Perhaps a supply oriented build (taking repair/build/supply masteries) versus a seige build (AC/Ballista/Seige damage) versus a guards build (off/def/mercanaries)? If anyone has actually done this on 3+ toons, I’d be very interested to hear what their experience was – find themselves playing the class they like the most anyways or perhaps they play the toon with the wxp skills they like the most?
Overall, I can see where this particular argument could go either way – but I’d like account too

They could make the ranks account bound but point allocation soul bound.

Not quite. In this system some pro-player could be on an alt with a low WXP rank. Alternatively, you could have someone just jump into WvW to join the karma trains, earning dozens of WXP ranks without ever lifting a finger.
They could make the ranks account bound but point allocation soul bound.
This would certainly be a step (and is more on task with OP topic then my slightly accidental diversion into account skills)

I’m not sure I understand this reasoning…
Invader (0-9) -> Bronze Invader (10-19) -> Silver Invader (20-29) -> Gold Invader (30-39)-> and so on.
If you wanted to add ranks use the same convention with those new ranks.
ANet Developer -> Bronze ANet Developer -> Silver ANet Developer -> Gold ANet Developer -> Undead Labs Developer (Jeff Strain ftw)
In terms you’re more familiar with, who wants to go from Tester, to Quality Assurance, to Department Lead, to Head of Design, to finally achieve the coveted and hard earned rank of Bronze Tester?
…but of course apparently all WvW players enjoy promoting ourselves into demotion…
Is it a problem that needs to be fixed? No! Of course not! It’s just !#$%ing stupid, and I personally have no qualms with pointing to anything or anyone to include myself and say, “hey, that’s !#$&ing stupid.”.
When it comes down to it shuffling up some text in a spread sheet might take you a few hours of copy and paste and as we both know there are vastly more important things a WvW developer needs to be doing than fooling around with an arbitrary naming convention. What’s done is done, it’s a minute "quality of life issue, and I’d rather see the return of orbs, institution of commensurate rewards for WvW players (particularly achievements), more maps, more types of siege, and for the love of all that is good and holy account bound world rank that doesn’t throw all my progress to the side when I decide to play my alt, “hey guys I’ll jump on that cannon I have the traits…wait I’m on my alt…never mind.”

Why should rank titles have to be so closely spaced? Look at current WvW achievements and make rank titles similar, e.g. rank 1,000,000 highest rank title. Pretty sure you won’t run out of titles without creating bronze-, silver-, gold-, diamond-, silk-, paper-, kitten champion.
Like Straegen.2938 idea, but make even bigger caps on titles if desired. Even though 2000 is out of reach for normal player that has a life.
I can’t believe people honestly care about the names of these ranks. It isn’t like they mean anything other than how much time you have spent. It isn;t anything to be upset over. Account bound wexp however
I vote the top WvW Rank be Over 9000 with no info about what server you are from.
Then when you see one you will be like"What did you say his power lv was?" “over nine thousand, but there is no way it can’t.”

Cheers for the reply, but honestly having too many ranks is never a problem, what is a problem however is the fact its character bound, why is that ? Why does it differ from PvP ranks ? Read what Gilgamesh said about the ranks, that’s what I mean, it doesn’t make any sense to me !
I really want to try playing alts in WvW, but since WxP was introduced, it makes it a waste. I believe it also makes playing characters < 80 in WvW a waste. Don’t the rank chests have a chance on precursor / ascended only if you’re 80?
So I’m stuck on my main until I get all the world mastery points. But they are adding new ones all the time… And once I get all, and go on an alt, they will all be gone.. just awesome.. not.
So I go from Legend to Bronze Invader.Sounds like a downgrade, the social elite will not favour me any longer.

That’s pretty much it in a nut shell.
The whole “we want you to try out various builds” concept doesn’t hold up. It’s not like we’re limited to a certain number of traits like in the normal class trait system; we only get more of them over time. There’s no point in trying to progress through on another character as it’s making the player start from scratch. We may all be picking a different set of traits first, but on a long enough time line we’ll all end up with the same WvW trait build; max-traited. There’s only so many trait lines the devs could add to the system before they just run out of stuff to trait for, so max-traiting is the goal. A goal that is done the fastest by never wasting play time on an alt, because everything in WvW is designed to take a long time to obtain.
So those are your options ANet:
1) Make World Rank, Traits, and Rewards account bound.
2) Limit the amount of trait lines any one character may have access to in order to encourage playing an alt with access to different traits. (ex: Let us pick a couple siege weapons, one keep weapon, a guard affinity I.e. defense or killer, and give everyone access to the supply and repair traits.)
I would be happy with either…oh and 300 points to carry 5 more supply? Really!? That’s just plain mean!

Given that probably 99% of your WvW population will never even come remotely close to the halfway point of those ranks, your really better off just making it account wide.
These is this little word called discouragement that kicks in, meaning that players have no real reason to level up additional alts in WvW, especially when some classes are far superior to others considering the imbalances. A player is not going to carry the same enthusiasm at rank 50, than they did at rank 2. So unless the plan is to increase the XP to the amount that your true casuals can gain 20+ levels a day, your better off making it account wide before boredom kicks in.
They will wait a year, and on 2nd anniversary they’ll introduce the ‘much requested’ and ‘huge’ wvw update that makes wxp account bound and call the job done for 2014 ^^
I think that’s the plan.
Don’t forget they will also add Commander Mastery, consisting of 10 ranks each 1000 WXP and unlock another color to dye your commander sign with every rank (up to #10…Hot Pink).

yup, going back to previous ranks (even if silver/gold ecc) isn’t fun: I understand that A.Net is trying to give continuos rewards to those who plays a lot, but imho you should never feel like you are stepping back.
Why don’t you guys just copy from real world? keep the current ranks, but add medals, so you steel feel like you are progressing instead of regressing…
At least make WxP account bound, I’m really put off using my alts.
If/when a GW2 expansion comes out and new classes/races are introduced, how many WvW players do you think will be willing to try them out at the expense of losing all of their WvW abilities? Yeah… c’mon Devon.
Making wxp account bound is probably the most important WvW change to me right now. I love playing my alts but I hate how my progress is completely spread out over multiple characters. Please Anet make the change.
