World vs World Cup
Cooooool! I’d love something like this.
Ignoring the problem of coverage being the end all to winning WvW, I’m totally for this idea. Frankly I think it would be good if they broke things up into Seasons and had a tournament like suggested at the end of them.
At the end of the Season I would also have like a week of free server transfers as long as you are going down, in the hope that maybe that would spur some shake-ups.
Word.
What happens when you get knocked out of the tourney?

You would play other knocked out servers just like normal WvW match ups we have now.

Do you mean a WvW athletic supporter? Dont give Anet any new ideas.

This sounds fun! I hope ANET does it.
The main problem with this is we already know what the outcome would be.
The difference between futbol / soccer world cup is the teams all field the same amount of players. How will a low tier world like et have a remote chance to be competitve if they face sor? It would be like one team fielded 11 players and the opposing team fielded 1 player in futbol/soccer.
(Bronze Soldier)
that sounds fun, maybe have some sort of battlegroup for guilds to sign up for. server based is meh due to the coverage lacking.

If they eliminate coverage being the deciding factor, then this would be a great idea.

The idea is this would be a big once-a-year event. Coverage on all servers would be elevated.

Wishful thinking anyone?

It may be wishful thinking, but you don’t think a competitive once-a-year event would bring more people out to WvW? I think you’re underestimating how REAL competition works. Right now, there is no real competition, and that’s why coverage suffers on lower tier servers (among a multitude of reasons, of course).
This is actually a bad idea. A WvW cup encourages people to join on servers that already have a greater WvW presence than one that doesn’t. As such servers become more unbalanced in WvW.
If there are rewards from winning a Cup this furthur encourages people to leave behind lower population servers, which breaks up communities and is overall bad for the game.
ArenaNet needs to get more people to the lower population servers not the other way around.

Easily mitigated. Lock server transfers leading up to this event, unlock them after its over. Server transfer only effect WvW anyways because guesting is available.
12 to 24 hour matches.
That’s the only way you could do something like this.
Infact it would be a better esport than tPvP
We already know the outcome. One of the T1 servers would win. No one else could compete. Not much fun having a competition if only 3 servers have a chance.
Sure, just let me quick my job and my family so I can be on 24/7 because I play on a server with very view night coverage….
what if during the tourney there was a population ( one in,one out system) that capped the population to the team with the lowest numbers. Ie Ferg has 200 players on all maps, so the server they are fighting is only allowed the same.
I know it creates a queue that people dont want..but then the battles come down to the players ability and not being swamped by over pop

If you want to be realistic we would say at most 100 Fergs can get on to play. If we want to be fair only 30 people could play because ET would need help. 30 is a gigantic number for ET. Sounds like that would be a fun tourny.
ET can only field 30 people on all 4 maps? diddnt know it was that bad. it sounds to me like the bottom 3 servers need to be closed and divided into the 6 servers above them. that would get rid of an abysmal tier8 and give 7 and 6 the same populations as 5,4,3,2

I think ET got a little more than 30 last night during a zerg in EB but they still had the outmanned buff. Anyways since this is a “Word Cup” the European servers would also have to compete against the NA ones. Just an idea

It really depends on the day. From what I’ve seen of ET lately the max they got was about 40. That falls away rather quickly. Have they had a bit more turn out this week with SF?
Any developers take on something like this? I think it would be something for the community to compete for, and make a yearly event like this would probably get a lot of attention in the gaming community as a whole. Any developers want to share their perspective on something like this?

Dont want to get off track. But from what Ive seen they are fielding a decent number compared to our last two weeks together. I mean they cant compete with HoD or SF in numbers. But I was watching EB and it took SF about 4-5 trys to take their keep.

I would be very surprised if there was any sort of statement on this, since there have already been at least a dozen threads suggesting seasonal tournaments very similar to this, going all the way back to last October. No one from Anet has ever acknowledged having seen them on the forums or in interviews, and I’ve never seen even a hint of this being discussed in any way by anyone working on GW2.

I know that we like to think that most people play this game for fun, but there really are servers with large sections of the population who play to win, and only to win, and it’s been that way basically since week long matches started. So I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a server find a way to use this to their advantage; for instance, by having a server-wide meeting in which they agree to have guilds take turns, with only 1 guild per map each night, and simply handing off to the next guild at an agreed time, to keep the WvW cap low and only have good, organized players on their maps. It would take a lot of daily advertising in Lions Arch, and some pugs would probably still get in, but if the opposing servers didn’t know that this was happening, big zerg servers could get hit pretty hard by a meta-strategy like this when they try to jump in WvW and find that only 40 people can get on each map, all mixed groups, possibly no Commanders, facing against an organized, WvW-focused force. It would be a good counter to “Stacking Servers”, I guess.
Sounds like a terrible idea. Would result in some serious mismatches which are no fun for anyone. The prize of winning for the big servers would result in them not easing up when fighting the smaller servers so they would be stomped by population alone.
I like the idea of a WvW, world cup…
It could be a special yearly Summer event…
It would be awesome if it involved ALL servers EUR/NA…
Because it would be over a short duration 6 weeks to 12 weeks? A lot of guilds would put a ‘special’ effort in, so servers who don’t normally do well, may surprise…
Would probably get more players, playing over the Summer when active players normally dips due to hopefully gorgeous weather…
It would after be some sort of knockout/cup competition…
I don’t think anything of what you guys are suggesting is vaguely possible at this point and to be honest, I would rather ANET spend whatever WvW dev time they have devoted to long term solutions that will keep the game viable all year long. Once they get to that point then we can start thinking about special WvW events and such. It is already painfully obvious that even slight changes in how WvW behaves are difficult for their code/servers to handle.
It is a nice idea to put on a shelf for someday tho and I am sure ANET is aware of the desire for more ways to shake things up in WvW. I still think they really missed the boat on providing us better ways to form more cohesive world communities so the competition between worlds would have more personality and maybe even mascots.
