Would factions make you quit the game?
Sadly, yes, it might. I play the game almost exclusively for WvW. Sure, I venture into PvE sometimes because rewards in WvW are lacking, but the removal of WvW very well might cause my departure despite having been in GW2 since launch.
And for clarification, the proposed changes are indeed the REMOVAL of WvW. The maps may be re-used, and many of the mechanics as well, but WvW will be removed and replaced with GvG. I have no interest in GvG. I do have an interest in WvW. GvG is not fun for me, WvW is. If a game does not provide fun for me, I have no reason to play or spend money on it.

I wonder how many people have just thrown their hands up and already quit because of this?

Couldn’t have better said it myself

If its 3 g per alliance, with no small ones I will probably take a break to see how it all plays out.
Im still not quite getting it? So if my community is made up of guild A, B, C, X, Y and Z, and i am in guild A. With 3 guild to an alliance my guild leader teams up with guilds B and C, and a lot of my friends are in guilds X, Y, Z and my guild leader would never team up with them because they don’t get on, does that mean outside of my guild i will never be able to play with my other friends any more?

Nah, ppl just quit because things got stale, or they don’t want to spend time, to adapt to the different layout.

Weird. Prior to HoT the maps were quite busy.
Factions, alliances, whatever it ends up being called will all depend on how it is executed. The devil is in the exact and specific details. And the stuff that was leaked on Reddit I doubt is even remotely close to what the actual changes will be.
It could revitalize WvW, or it could make it even more dead.
Considering how stale and dead WvW currently is, I’m willing to risk going to a new system. And I think Anet has had enough time to look over the system and cook up something new and better.
I know, I know, we’ve been burned before, but call me an optimist.
And for all you people worrying about server communities dying, don’t. Just turn your website from AnvilYakQuarry.com to AnvilYakQuarryAlliance.com.

It’s because people had Pre-HoT hype, came back, HoT came out, everybody spent most of their time in pve unlocking their elites and then people re-entered, but gave up once they tried working their way through the maps.
WvW isn’t rewarding,. and there’s really no point in playing for points or objectives anymore.
There’s one guild on Deso, day and night, that has no clue how to really defend stuff, they just look for undefendable stuff for points and prefer to stay away from doing any pvp, apart from zerging.
My guild is the only Guild on the Borderlands, looking to fight during the evening. Compared to every other server, at least they try to make use of the map terrain, but Deso has only 1-3 guilds and a queue on EB if we’re lucky.
People might stay around, because of how good the combat is, but the balance sucks aswell.

This was not my experience. It was less dead but far from busy.
If an alliance system featured limits on alliance participation (guilds per alliance and wvw-participants per guild) of the sort leaked on Reddit, then I’d give up WvW.
Whether the limit is 3 guilds or 12 and whether the participating-player limit is 100 or 300, that will create a Procrustean Bed on which size guilds are allowed to participate.
Worse still, if my alliance is limited to N guilds, then I’ll have to constantly harangue players into participating so that our alliance doesn’t replace us with a guild who can field more players or field players for longer/better hours.

Yeah if that was how any new WvW play would be, yep… think I’d find another aspect to play of the game… Oh weight, I hate the story, I don’t like sPvP, and yet I loved WvW… Okays, so Fractals… lol…
But in all seriousness, if that was the case, I can see lots of smaller guilds just leaving this game in mass. I mean they are already wanting to with the new guild halls… I can see it becoming mandatory then with that sort of system. It be like saying, Z zerg has 80 people, Y zerg has 25 people from 10 different guilds, and X zerg has 50 people. Z zerg would focus on Y zerg finish them out and then have a nice 1 v 2 or more against X zerg. BORING!…
