Q:
WvW Dying On Whiteside ridge
Did you not hear about WvW updates only occurring every 2 months once the WvW Seasons kick off? I’m sorry to hear that things are not going well for your server, but your problem is one that may never be solved.
we have many low pop servers,y not merge 2 servers for better population? and better wvw? instead of killing wvw in low pop servers.we really dint know what to do.so i posted on forums for this problem.
WvW is certainly a big reason I went for this game, to reach end game on the WSR server and to have player number balancing issues is quite frustrating at times. As a server we make an effort as best we can – I guess individual players could jump server and transfer, however, this is not so easy from a guild perspective where much time has been spent to develop the guild. Something needs to be changed to allow a more enjoyable experience in WvW across any server, regardless of it population. Some form of player auto-balancing, modifying the outnumber bonuses, merging low/medium population servers for WvW game play only (maybe upon WvW reset) – just some ‘off the cuff’ hair brained ideas. Does anyone have other ideas or opinions ?
How about WvW overflow offering hosting on less populated servers? Just for WvW without the day limit penalty?
may be introducing new maps can bring more people into wvw.
may be introducing new maps can bring more people into wvw.
New maps would be nice, a better reward than farming in pve can also work. But the downside could be it would attract the wrong kind of people to wvw.
It is not an easy task for Anet to try and fix wvwvw and to make it better, I hope they are trying though.
Irony is that I stopped doing wvw against vabbi and wsr(i’m on fow) because we just walked all over them in the end. No fun and I could imagine what it must be like to be on the receiving end. And right now we are on the receiving end and it’s no fun to be outnumbered by such large numbers.
I’m afraid in this case it isn’t just population. Vabbi has a notoriously low population, and here at Blacktide we’re often crushed by servers with a decent wvw population. I’m not sure why WSR has fallen so low, but it’s happened pretty quickly. A couple wvw guilds might have transferred?
ya some have transfered but its not about winning, its all about having fun.we cant even have some fun in wvw now.5-8 people tries to take back our borderlands for hours and huge zerg comes wipes all people within seconds and everything gone.may be 80% it is population based,20% tactics.
Yes, about a month ago, WSR lost its two dedicated WvW guilds who moved to find better fights. Following this, it lost two to four more semi-WvW guilds who were pessimistic because the other guilds had left. Before the first wave of leaving, we were dominating FoW and fairly equal with respect to Blacktide in matchups. Before the second, we held our own against FoW. Currently, we are about equal with Vabbi and losing quite poorly to everyone else.
Now, a lot of the players on the server have a rather sour opinion about WvW. Towards the end, many players were frustrated by the occasional elitist behavior of a few members of the dedicated WvW guilds, who were getting a little irate at their relative lack of competition. With them gone, many players are now not playing WvW out of pessimism.
The problem isn’t entirely a numbers issue: we have easily accumulated zergs of 40-50 people during the hours each night when we are doing “well”, which is a decent number considering the tier we’re playing at.
I think a far greater problem lies with morale and attitude. When we finish clearing our own border, the 40-50 people present becomes 4-5 in a matter of minutes as other people either leave or head to EB (where their reduced numbers often means that things don’t go well). This is despite Blacktide often responding and bringing a zerg to attack the border within half an hour or so (so staying and defending would not be a dull activity for long). Similarly, the loss in numbers after one of our zergs gets wiped is huge.
With that said, I think this wave of pessimism will draw to an end. Once morale improves, more players will be active. Already we have had multiple guilds coming together to arrange server-wide ‘WvW nights’ which I’m lead to believe have been quite successful. We still have a handful of WvW guilds, both of the ‘casual’ variety and the ‘organized’ variety. More players have started trying their hand at commanding, and some of them have done a decent job at it.
I am somewhat fearful that the WvW league idea upcoming will be somewhat negative for us. I imagine that when the leagues are announced, some WvW guilds will want to relocate into the servers ranked 10-12 and 19-21 where they can use their influence to push a server to the top of that league. These are guilds that might have otherwise considered moving into the lowest ranked servers where they’d be superstars instead.
Still, I think WSR is capable of recovering from this, once people start to cheer up and try it out.
Okay so the problem = sheer power of numbers eliminates fun for both sides, eliminating tactics bringing the game to a “whoever has more men wins” scenario, so here are my solutions:
a) Whenever a group of 8 or more forms within 100ft an Icon appears telling you where they are, <14/200ft a different icon, <20/300ft a different icon, and so on and so forth, effectively allowing small numbers to make a difference in WvW and ensuring you can avoid being ROFLPWNED the minute you take a stroll to the hills.
b) Numbers to power ratio 10v100 all stats = X10, 1v100 all stats = X100, 20v20 all stats = X0. Pretty Simple.
c) Overflow from high pop = Mercenaries, they get cash for gaining points in WvW for their less robust brethren servers.
d) High pop servers get cut to provide more balancing and there is a 20 people merging limit for joining/transferring servers, probably a bad idea because this will aggravate the world. But the mechanic is that no one server can exceed 20 above any other server pop, effectively balancing populations, people who don’t play for 1-2 months get drafted to a “holding” server.
They are my ideas, developers feel free to use them (that’s why they are there), people feel free to throw ur ideas in, or just tell me it reeks of horse dung and to get a life because no-one loves me and I have mommy issues… JKS but seriously, devs, jack in… FO REAL

If they add more maps to the WvW queue this will only kill smaller servers. Small servers can’t even fill the current 4 zones this is just another advantage to the higher population servers.

give servers that are losing badly like 100/150k points a fast way to capture keep/towers, a Big ol’ bomb type siege to blow walls but only usable when you got the outnumbered buff. 1 bomb for t1 walls and so on.
Change the camp buff, decrease it for camps taken by winning server and prolonged when captured by losing server.
may be introducing new maps can bring more people into wvw.
I think this is very unlikely. Granted many many current WvW players want new maps. PVE players PVE to grow their “Stuff”. WvW doesn’t offer that, it offers zergs, lag, and armor repair bills. Yes we have had some boosts in financial gain with the new drops from lords, but nothing like going to Frostgorge and farming champs. Yes there is more challenging fights in WvW, but when the reward is nominal then many, many people just find it a waste of time.
With the “league” rewards coming out I expect that the end rewards will also have so little monetary value that casual WvW players will give it up for the spoils of PVE.

“easily accumulated zergs of 40-50 people”
I have not seen that many ppl in our server for a looooooooong time.
so here 2 ways for a-net to fix the problems:
Make server transfers to Whitesideridge and Vabbi free.
or
Make server transfers from Whitesideridge and Vabbi free, so everyone who wants to do wvw can do it.
Commander of Piken.
Ranger for Life.
They should give a lot more reward for outnumbered people, especially if they won. And much less for people running in big mob hoping for free kittens.
Like if u successfully defend a castle when being outnumbered 1 to 10 you get an exotic. If you successfully get a castle with 10 times bigger force than the enemy you get a dung pie and 1 world xp cause that how impressive you are.
I think you guys on WSR and Vabbi will be in for a good time soon! Arborstone lost some more WvW guilds aswell (to Fort Ranik) and is dropping down to you guys. So if Anet doesnt screw up the matchups with putting other servers in there and Arborstone keeps dropping in rating i think there is a good time to be had in Ex-T9 soon.
Anet should do somthing about this.Hope we get an good solution.
I’m not sure why people keep posting about this. The only comments I’ve heard from developers is that WvWvW is NOT supposed to be fair. A lot of these issues fall under that umbrella.
1. Population imbalance (general server and active participants on the w3 maps)
2. Night-capping (also referred to as mismatched coverage)
3. Zerging or Blobbing (on high-pop servers this is nearly guaranteed to happen)
The fact is, as I understand it, this all falls under that umbrella of, “Yes. It’s unfair. We know it. We’re not doing anything to change it.”
One possible problem for A-net (that I can see) is that if they change anything – like forcing population size or buffing any out-manned server – it will inevitably cause an negative scenario where some or all of the people playing W3 will too limited in what they can do.
1. They won’t be able to play with the friends they want to play with if servers get locked to a certain size. It will split up groups of friends trying to play together.
2. If they disallow participation based on time-zone – they will limit who can play with who, when they can play, and how they can play. This is an unacceptable situation for A-net.
3. It will be contrary to their vision of what W3 is supposed to be like. They original said they wanted several hundreds of players to be able to battle one another in one giant persistent battle. They have doggedly stuck to this vision in every post about it that I’ve ever read where a developer has responded to the issue.
I say leave the population imbalance alone – it was obviously meant to be unfair – so then let it be. In the real world – would we ask those countries with very large armies to reduce their manpower because we think it’s unfair? Nope.
The only real problem is the server lag that’s inherent in large battles. It is obvious that either A-net doesn’t have the largest, most powerful servers available.
Or
The problem is with the client machines (your computers – talking to the players here) with sub-par graphics cards (GPU), central processing units (CPU), or with the amount and speed of the installed ram.
Or
There is a problem with internet connection – being completely different in terms of raw speed and stability – of each player or the datacenter at A-net headquarters.
Or (and this is real reason I suspect)
The size and scope of the battles that A-net want’s to provide to us is simple not possible in the world we live in.
A-net should realize this and simply lower the cap in each map. Then, the only way to have the overall size and scope they wish to have is to expand the battle to more maps. Make the whole war happen on 12 completely different maps instead of the 4 that we currently have. The population on each map would need to be managed; then the populations would be spread out which would alleviate the server lag that makes most really large battles unplayable (say 50v50 or 30v30v30 – those sizes). It’s the only solution I see A-net implementing.
I suppose that enlarging the maps that we have might make some difference, but on any one map, no matter how large it is, the capture points will bring large numbers of players together in the same place, so that really won’t fix the problem.
Instancing battles is the only way to decrease the server lag. There are simply too many people hogging the limited resources on A-nets servers.
But hey – what do I know. I’m just an average Joe trying play a game.
In regards to population is king – that is not exactly true. Piken Square as of tomorrow will be third on the rankings and we are a medium population server. On most days we struggles to field numbers during the night. As such, WvW is all about communication. Vizunah aren’t all that great in an open field fight, however they win due to their communication, just before points are totaled every 15 minutes, you will see their potential points rise massively. Try this on Whiteside, have several small groups that take out towers and camps just before points are totaled. Perhaps take the Riverside approach and fill every tower, camp and keep to the brim with seige, just two arrowcarts can act as a deterrent for a whole zerg – try it. If you want to boost morale, go into LA map chat and shout out to everyone that you are going to take Stonemist, rally your zerg at the keep and talk them through how it will work, then when you take it, it will have that really epic feeling that everyone came together and took the castle. Make everyone feel that they are a part of something bigger and you should have no issues with morale.
can you tell me in more elaborated way on what you people do on piken? @AngelsShadow.7360 we will try to implement that in whiteside,Thank you.
