WvW Environmental Abuse
As annoying as it is for the defender, I believe that’s the purpose of the design of those water gates, to allow exactly that sort of thing to happen. It’s a feature, not a bug. There are at least 3 underwater skills that knock an opponent back. I recommend using one of the to push the Mesmer away from the gate before they go down.
This issue has been brought up many times and does not need more attention brought to it. If you feel something is not right take some screen shots or vid rec and bring up a support ticket with anet. Any time people post a bug or exploit on public forums its just spreads the info around and opens it up to more abuse.

This flaw/bug/whatever has been around since day one. If you search threads you will see rather lengthy discussions on it. Moreover, those who have played FC often are aware of their practiced strategy of using this mechanic. On HoD, we never leave an FC mesmer inside a gate without one or more people camping them until they give up. One thing about FC mesmers though, they are patient little buggers. I’ve seen them wait more than 2 hours to get rezzed.
There are some on our server that won’t use our mesmers if they die inside the gate, saying that it’s “dishonorable.” If it is working as intended, which I glean that it is, then it’s a fair mechanic, but you have to watch the other servers carefully.

As for the water gate, I kinda noticed something like that with Bay’s watergate a week or two ago. Didn’t see anyone rez through it, but I did see an enemy mesmer die on the inside of the gate and wondered if the enemy could come back and rez them through it, which I guess you can.

Yeah, they’ve tried that with us and we just try to pull and push them away from that gate before downing them in the water or force them to run.

I find it kind a odd for that to be a feature. It just does sound right. “Run in and die on one side of a gate so you can be rezed through”.
I played WvW since it came out but I guess I never noticed this before. We were a little shocked on the stupidity of it. The plan was to pull the Mesmer back however there are pugs and well…

We had the same issue with FC when we fought them. Try not to kill them near a gate. If they do die near one, post a lone guard to watch his body. Eventually they go away.
But I agree, its a pretty cheap move…wish Anet would get rid of it. Mesmer skilled enough to hide = OK by me. Mesmer laying dead by gate = Lame.

To everyone on this thread who witnessed this: Please report this activity to exploits@arena.net with whatever screenshots/proof you have. Technically, we are not supposed to do this on the forums.
Also keep an eye out for it happening again, screenshot it (or even better, record UNEDITED video it), and sent that to the e-mail as well. It would also really help if someone from FC did this to get there actual screen names.
Or, you know, WZ could just stop exploiting…

There have been lengthy discussions on this and since ANET has not waded into those discussions it can be considered a valid strategy. It does make it necessary to place a guard over the corpse. The only time it can be considered an exploit is when the mesmer manipulates inventory in order to extend the timeout timer allowing him to stay dead indefinitely. If you witness that then bug it.

I’m really surprised that anet doesn’t understand the difference between competitive pvp and role play pvp. – and I don’t mean that like a dis, considering all the games they’ve reviewed according to their interviews.

It is not hard to solve this problem.
Just add a feature that kick immobile/ unattended players out of WvW after 5 minutes. (Yes, when you’re dead, you can do nothing, so you’ll be count as immobile)
This method not only eliminate all the gate abuses, but also help the server greatly because there’d be no-one in the WvW afking.
It also resolve the extensive que problem people been whining about.
It also kick the trolls who occupied on siege weapon while doing nothing on it. (Like treb and golems). 5 minutes is a perfect timer because you have time for bio break, opening doors, talking to your mom, or getting dinner. It is not too long nor too short.
Yeah if they prevented you being able to open bags or even char screen on death — basically nothing until you respawn — it would fix a ton of issues.
it really doesn’t seem like a problem, it seems more like a mechanic.
the rpg approach to this would be to have a spell called “Dispel Corpse” or even the option to burn a body. The fact that this game has a necro, would render any other fix improper.

Naw it’s lame really. It just becomes a battle of wills. I don’t really see it as an exploit, but a seasoned Mesmer won’t typically use it. With so many means of escape, the death by the gate thing is really only for weak players.

How about the definition of exploit in the rules of conduct you agreed to in order to play this game:
“You will not exploit any bug in Guild Wars 2 and you will not communicate the existence of any such exploitable bug (bugs that grant the user unnatural or unintended benefits) either directly or through public posting, to any other user of Guild Wars 2.”

Now you can make the argument that this problem is intended, but realize that if you do so, you are just rationalizing your behavior.
And since when do people in competitive pvp like exploits? Seriously?

I almost wish I could do consulting with anet – I’d have elven cloaks in this game :p

If its being used currently by WZ, and I haven’t witnessed it myself, it may be because this has been used against FC fairly regularly in the past six weeks by several servers. It got so bad at one point a month ago that someone would often stand guard at the water gate constantly to prevent a Mesmer from getting to it or being rezzed. I forget which server was responsible so I am not going to accuse anyone.
Unless developer posts on here (maybe this has already happened?) and says yes it is a bug or no it was intended, it is not worth discussing.

To make it better, how about making it as a trap, whoever step on it can not be rev when they’re fully dead and need to WP :P?

The trap would last for 10 seconds after it triggers and cost 15 supply.
Something like sulphuric acid trap of some sort.

Ok to settle this right now. Rezing through the gate is perfectly fine in my honest opinion. The issue was the WZ was using an exploit to remain dead and active for 1+ hours. Since you get d/c if you remain inactive for 5mins dead.

I’m from GOM and it seems FC [WZ] guild is abusing an environmental flaw. They took down outer ran a Mesmer inside and let him die at water gate. There he stood for 20-30 mins until the zerg was ready they rezed him through the water gate he then portaled them in.
The best part is they did this 3 times till they capped it. We stopped them twice.

yea, they did same thing to us last time we faced them. the screwed up thing is we went to some good lengths to give these guys fair fights, if this inst an exploit then its cheese at its best. i used to think of these guys as a decent wvw guild, but they lost all of our respect.
this kinda crap goes along other exploits in the game such as use of ACs and vid settings to reach normally unaccessible locations etc. its a borderline exploit at best, definitely cheese.
FYI, i’m from SF, not GOM, this is these guys “standard” practice. sad.

actually, staying dead that long does sound like an error – because inactive players naturally get logged off after x amount of time inactivity. But resurrecting through gates is a game mechanic
so this is a 2 part issue – rezing through gate is ok (providing it’s in line of sight – ie range 900-1200 and not through a wall – you have to actually see the corpse and your spell has to be able to reach it or touch the body to rez ), but staying dead for longer than inactivity time is an error.

that’s more in the tactic’s side though. what takes talent is getting out of the keep alive in time to make the portal and having everyone organized.
Not really. Most wait till the enemy gets bored or leaves the keep. Then they dodge the npcs and portal in.
It’s more impressive if a Mesmer can dodge being chased by five or more enemy, hide, stealth, then portal in, without some lame outside rezzing mechanic.

My main is a mesmer, with about 3k hours in WvW. When I was first learning the class I was delighted to learn you could do this. But after getting more proficient, I dunno, the gate rezzing thing just feels cheap to me. It’s much more of a “wahoo!” moment to hide well, then portal people in. I make a game of seeing how many times I can do that on reset versus various servers on different maps. My best to date has been 8 SM flips (I had a fabulous teacher on SM) and 2 Bay flips in same night on reset versus Vizunah.
Of course my job was the easy part. It helps to have some pretty tough guilds and commanders on your side to see the portals through.

If by new you mean I operate in FC bl 3 hours every night for the last 9 months, then yes, I am new. I have yet to be ported into Bay through the water gate. I am not saying it did not happen, but I have not seen it myself yet.

Having seen people get in trouble for this, it is an exploit and not how they meant it. The gates are like other gates/walls, you should not be able to res a person through them, however, environmental mechanics allow the abuse of the res radius through the gates which are “thin” and allow you to get into range of the body to res. Most other commanders from other servers we have talked to about this also agree and will often times tell the map or go and find the person and tell them to release, and we do the same out of fair play and respect.
Back in the day, duels in japan between generals sometimes consisted of only one pass. If one would turn around after the initial pass and stab the other in the back, capitalizing on an attack of opportunity and successfully kill the other general, he would be considered a military genius. If he failed to kill his opponent with the sneak attack from behind, then he would be considered a coward.
Take it how you want to. Either you capitalize on an opportunity or you don’t.

Could you have a more ridiculous analogy? The game has had a history of all sorts of exploits (like buggin through gates without siege) that shouldn’t be used. Further, this isn’t a matter of life and death, it’s a game with buggy code.
It is not a problem with the rez mechanic, it is an issue with the gates. If you wanted to fix it so people cannot be resurrected through gates then it would also entail arrow carts, swords, mesmer clones, or anything else that passes “through” a closed gate. Without going into that in depth as it has all been discussed before, the best fix for the mesmer dying by the gate is to fix the timeout timer so it cannot be manipulated or extended. Yes you will still have to post a guard over a dead body but that would be a part of strategy, not an exploit.
Nope, they need to just fix the “inactive” exploit part of this. The rezzing is just cheese, cheap as people above have stated, the exploit that prevents dead people from getting auto logged out needs to be fixed.
I’m just terribly confused about why this is a thread. I’m guessing that its people new to WvW because anyone who has played for more than like a day usually finds out about this. I found out about it the first day I played.
Anyways. Best way to get rid of a dead mesmer there is through the use of another mesmer. Your whirlpool or whatever can drag bodies away from the gate slowly. So just get them out of rezzing range with it.
Skill is #5 on spear. Vortex.
