What with Season 2 of the League just over 48 hours away, I thought it would be useful to start a thread defining some of the common terms used in WvW. I’ll get things started but will need your help.

Think of it as a way of helping yourself. Instead of QQ’ing about the Ahhhhs (Achievement Hunters) not following the convention (mainly because they don’t understand what you are on about), help them by explaining what these terms mean!

I’ll get things started with a couple or three ..

Gather on Me : A variant of the more common Stack on Me. This is called out by the Commander who needs to complete his daily, and is tacit permission to farm that ore node or tree at which he stopped the train.

Food Reminder : Usually called out by people on the Commander who has just coordinated the 2 hour defense of Home Borderland Garrison. A plea to be allowed to go to the kitchen to stock up on junk food and beer before carrying out the mundane task of repairing walls, gates and Mesmer sweeping.

Mesmer Sweep : Disposing of all the defeated glassy mesmers who attempted to hide in said above Garrison .. you look at them and they’re downed.. (<3 U guys )

Ignore Sentry : Usually directed at that lone chap who is green/blue colour-blind and doesn’t realise he’s attacking his own sentry. This can also happen if you were green world last week and now blue world (in which case, practically the whole zerg diverts to attack their own sentry).

Hopefully, you get the idea.. so get to it, Guys.. Give back to the wider community!

Buff / Buff might: The commander is preparing for battle and obviously will need something to help with all the commands he will deliver. Drop water fields to quench his thirst and thieves drop Shadow refuge because maybe this time you can stealth the entire zerg.

Edit: Can you put “spoof” or something similar in the title so people do not actually do this stuff xD

Scout reports : When you round a corner and see an enemy zerg blobbing it’s merry way along, shout out “enemies here”.

Heads-up Shouts : When you see players with red words above their heads, call out in map chat “INC”.

Attack reports : When you are in a tower/keep and the enemy zerg is heading for the door shout in map chat “GATE!111!!”, and when asked which tower/keep and which gate shout out “TOP GATE!!11”.

VEIL : A command to the mesmer to place the skill veil in front of the commander in order to become invisible and confuse the enemy about to be attacked.
This is different from the the following:
Veil! Veil! Where’s my f——g veil? : A lament the commander will sing when he commands a melee only zerg.

PUSH : a term the Commander will use to signal a headlong rush into the enemy zerg. You should stand dead still and wonder who is having a baby there on the battlefiled, then melt as their front-line runs over you.
BANNER : the dying shriek of the Commander when only two people pushed with him.

Portal the golems: Something the commander says when he wants half his zerg to stay on the portal entrance and wait for the mesmer to do the running for them. Usually results in 20 people and no golems making it through the portal.

Don’t attack the door : A Commander will tell you this when he does not want to give the enemy advance warning of your attack by popping orange swords on their map. You should ignore this order completely.
F—- It, just PVD: A term usually used by the Commander almost immediately after the above order, because half his zerg just face-rubbed on the door and popped said swords.

Stay on pin, follow the commander’s blue pin. Apparently some servers call it stay on tag, so depending on what server you are transferring from/to, you’ll hear different things called. But tag & pin, both just mean to stick with the commander tag.

Portal bomb, there’s a mesmer ready to give your raid a portal to drop right on top of enemies. Be sure to press F quickly to get into the portal, or you’ll be left behind out of action.

Big water, cast elementalist water staff #5 on the commander, and someone needs to blast the water for it to work properly. Small water, cast elementalist water staff #3 on the commander.

Rally, means things are getting hot, people are low in hp, probably have stacks of conditions on them. Everyone needs to rally to the commander for a regroup, refresh, cleanse, heal, might buffs, etc.. ready for another push. Rallies don’t last long so make sure you get there fast or you’ll miss out on heals, cleanses, and buffs.

Stability, usually called during initial rush, or when rushing through a choke point. Guardians, warriors, etc.. make sure to pop your stability or your raid will get cc’ed.

Static cc, elementalist staff air #5, drop it on the commander or where the big clash is about to occur.

Spike damage, full dps, means the enemies are in a nicely packed bunch, load up your best aoe’s and nuke them all down.

Stomp, finish the downed, because nothing is more frustrating to see 10 downed enemies rally up all at once, or get banner rezzed.

Thanks, I didn’t know about that one. On my server “small water” means commander needs a three minute break and “big water” means he needs a ten minute break and another roll of toilet paper.

Drain (e.g. Drain Supply): find the nice stack of barrels/boxes by the Supply Quartermaster in the keep / tower and grab supply. Congratulations! You’ve just taken a keep that you know you are going to be turning back over to an enemy and you want to make sure they don’t have any goodies to build siege with to nail you when you come back to take it again. Revolving keeps ftw!

+5, as in SE CAMP +5: means some kindhearted/and/or aware player has claimed the supply camp and spent their guild influence to make sure that the karma train, er, zerg, er allies on the map can get extra supply (e.g. you can now carry 15 supply instead of 10) so you now have NO excuse not to build those rams the Commander demands “left to right”.

Left to Right: this one SHOULD be obvious but a lot of players seem to miss. It means, build rams starting FROM the LEFT (as you face the door you are about to PvD), and build TOWARDS the RIGHT. ALSO: if you see 3 build sites in front of the door, please build the one on the left (like reading a book).

PvD: Player versus Door. Elementalists: this is where you shine. Please use your staff Fire Attunement #2 ability (Lava Font) to add might to all those hammer/greatsword Warrior/Guardians that are pounding on the door WHEN the Commander directed them to.

Mastery? or Ram Mastery? Please, for the love of gawd and your server, if you do NOT have WvW trait points up the Ram Mastery skill line, do NOT step into the bright shiny toy that looks fun. Let someone who has skill points all the way up that line run the Flame Ram. It will make the door go "boom"that much faster, which will let you run up and kill the tower/keep lord that much faster which will give you your phat loot bag hopefully before the enemy zerg lands in the lord’s room and wipes you.

Eyes on xxx? As in: Eyes on Bay or Eyes on Hill?: Simply: is someone watching to see if any enemies are approaching your already captured / owned keep in the hopes of defending/retaining said keep.

In Before The Tick: Congratulations! You’ve just scored some points for your server before the 15-min clock timer ran out. That means somebody either had a darn good strategy or got very lucky in taking a camp/tower/keep. See, the only points (PPT) that actually count, are those that occur RIGHT before the 15 minute timer runs out. In other words: if you take an objective (camp/tower/keep) and HAVE it when the timer runs out, you get points. If you are unlucky enough to take a keep too early in that 15 minute cycle, then the enemy has that much more time to take it back and hold it and get the points when the clock runs out instead of you.

Blob and/or Zerg: Huge amounts of players (see: StarCraft). Or as some folks say: “Who needs skill when you have numbers?” Also known as: lag.

If you are scouting, do understand the difference between a zerg & blob. A zerg is around 30 people. A blob is 50+. This also means don’t call it a zerg if it’s just 5-10 people. Mis-scouted reports can kill and potentially pull too many friendly forces off to a location with 10 enemy players, and losing a keep in the process.

Rallybot: this is not a term of endearment. It is also not an automated player, just one who may play like one.

This is something you do not want to be. When the commander says: “Pull Back”, GTFO please. Do not stand there fighting and die and give the enemy a chance to use you like a mob to rez themselves.

You don’t want to be a mob do you?

This also includes a long discussion about spec/build/skill, etcetera.

Just pay attention to TS and/or mapchat.

Refresh siege all types of siege (except for mortars and golems and canons ofc) despawn automatically after 1 hour. By quickly manning a siege weapon you reset its despawn timer and it lasts on for another hours. So constantly refresh siege (you see how long it’s still standing around by klicking on one and hover your mouse over the blue symbol). Always check siege timers if you’re entering a tower/keep and man it as often as possible.
