WvW: More Emphasis On Guards?
Makes no sense… and I’m against anything that adds PVE to WvW.
Not saying that I wouldn’t want some version of this, but I believe that there are bigger issues to deal with

I’d prefer the guards be a bit more of a threat to a level 80 character, particularly the upgraded ones, but I don’t think this is the way to do it.
All guards should do, and did untill for some dumb reason they changed orange swords to 25+, was notify you when a fight was going on. A few guards could easily get 5 ppl into combat and make it apparent stuff as going on.
That was it and that was good. Meant it was less important for players to camp on walls (still important, but less) and allow players to move around and do fun stuff. NPCs shouldnt be much of an obstacle, WvW has to much PvE elements as it is (while missing the whole being rewarding coin/loot wise… funny that)
I think that more NPC should be added to WvW but not in this way, they should be more like emergency reinforcements if a server has outmanned on, so there is not as much pressure

^^ this …. why waste silvers upgrading guards that can’t defend themselves against lesser numbers?
3 guys can still wipe an upgraded camp with Hylek. And the Hylek I consider an upgrade because they seem tougher than guards with that CC.
I would love those upgrades to count.
I’m sure many of you will disagree, but I would love to see more emphasis placed on defeating (and defending) guards. I, for one, glean a good deal of enjoyment from taking the yaks/waypoints, but there is really only so much of this you can do. While siege always will be a large part of WvW, I find that running supply and using the sieges can be rather dull and there’s not always manageable groups of other players to fight.
A brief (un-fleshed-out) example.
What if players could use supply on some item, that when used would call out a “Champion Captain of the Guard” from the keep? He would be leashed to the immediate area around the keep, but if defeated might remove 10% from the hp of the gate and/or destroy some supply within the keep.
Just a basic idea, but something like this would be great for those of us who tire of siege and (especially) like PvEvP.
Count me among those who disagree with you. I’ve never understood why players think adding more PvE to WvW is the way to make WvW more interesting or exciting. Turning WvW into a pseudo-dungeon just seems stupid to me.

When I read the title, I was hoping for something along the lines of upkeep on structures. Doing tasks within them to reward people who are defending important towers. Mainly when not under attack.
Things like even siegerazor are disliked. We really don’t need anymore spotlight on pve characters in wvw.

Some see it as adding PvE to WvW, but let’s be honest here, WvW is not pure PvP. If it was there would be no NPC guards, players would have to fill those positions. WvW is all about the players, not NPCs, and as such is very different from PvE. The guards are there as an active defense, the walls being a passive one, and yet only one of the two is effective and worth the money.
WvW should always be about the player, and in the end it always will be, but that doesn’t mean there is no room for NPCs to have a role. The role of typical guards used to be to show those orange swords on the map, which was already mentioned by Terrahero, but in it’s current state that no longer happens, and the guards are simply a weak obstruction to the offensive team. In camps in particular the only reason to upgrade the guards is to increase the amount of supply stored there.
So please, don’t jump on the “no more PvE in WvW” bandwagon unless you’re willing to stand at a camp for hours on end and defend it, those NPCs have a role, albeit a very weak one in their current state.

It’s not a bandwagon … I’d be against adding more PvE to WvW if nobody had ever complained about it. I play WvW for two things … the strategy aspects of trying to outwit the other team(s) and the skill aspects of trying to outfight other players. NPCs (quaggans, dredge, etc … even guards) add a minor element to the strategy side of things, but making it more important to fight NPCs than other players is NOT what WvW was intended to be.
If I wanted to fight “superior NPC’s” or dragons or bosses I’d go do dungeons, but I hate that playstyle and I play WvW so I don’t have to do it.

Superior NPCs are definitely not the way to go, only one person posted here with any sort of agreement to the OP. The main thing the NPCs gave us is now gone, giving them a new purpose is hardly adding “more PvE to WvW”.
The only guard change I’d like to see was posted here a few months back. I can’t remember the guy’s name or I’d give him credit for a great idea:
Yaks should be invulnerable until the escorts are dead. Right now as a thief I can completely ignore the yak escorts and take out the yak as easily as I could before the other team upgraded to have the escorts. It’s a useless upgrade that should be implemented better.
Maybe they should just give us the option of upgrading the yak itself (hitpoints, veteran status, armor, etc.)
