WvW Players Names!
Because icons was far simpler maybe? I don’t know.
Played ESO RvR this weekend cause it was f2p, they use icons and when you highlight the player it gives info on them. Possible influence I don’t know I don’t play any other games’ RvR.
ESO has been f2p for 7 months.

Just to clarify on the weekend ESO was free to play just for the weekend and no its not terrible, combat is not as fluid as GW2 but its RvR mechanics are miles ahead of GW2 because they have devs that know what they are doing.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro

Copying a terrible game would explain why this new name plates thing is terrible, I mean really, it’s like a child thought of it, my server is currently red, I see allies with green guild tags and red spots above head, I see enemy’s with red guild tag and green spots above head or blue spots, it looks like something they knocked up in 5 mins. Try harder Anet.
Just to clarify, I will never use it.

The red dots on friendly players and green on enemies was too much of a culture shock for me, too. I have turned off this feature and will advice everyone else to do so.
I do like the simplicity. If only the coloring was consistent.
Suggestion:
- use different symbol for each team and keep the normal coloring
- remove guild tag from pet and NPCs nameplates (they are not your guild members)
- align guild text center (looks like the guild text is little to right from the center)
This won’t hurt [Much]

i think this is the result of the posts made by people entitled
give us back our identities to the linked servers, we don’t want to be guests anymore, we want identity
pieces of kittens….
turning off the nameplate then making the team player color lighter/brighter is better
and good for fps too than this piece of kitten

Saw this in WvW last night and hadn’t a clue who I was fighting half the time whether it was barach bay or Miller’s Lake. Will be turning this off next time I WvW though as I like to know which server I’m killing and the ranks of people around. I can probably win vs 2 or 3 not even bronze players, against the same number of silver and gold not likely unless they’re zerglings.
The thing that really gets me though is we had an ideas thread where they passed by 3 ideas to reduce nameplate clutter and keep server identity none of them were what we got yesterday. General feedback in the thread was they were all bad as they pretty much destroyed identity or didn’t really let you know who you were fighting against.
I won’t pretend I read everything in the thread but I skimmed a lot of ideas and I honestly can’t remember anyone suggesting the nameplate change we got yesterday unless it was after I posted. It feels especially bitter as all that feedback was ignored, people didn’t want to just see a guild tag and a little circle yet this was ignored.
Edit: Norbe, there’s a difference between the meaning of entitled you’re using and having been asked for feedback, giving it then being completely ignored. Especially when the majority in the feedback thread didn’t want this.
whats that feedback thread?
i only knew the poll on which the KISS/1u1d lost a landslide.
the majority voted this

I too think the naming system in WvW is ridiculous. Often you can’t even hide behind obstacles because your name stretches from LA to NYC.
Guys it’s only been one day so far. Give it a few weeks to get something to base your feedback on. Make it constructive, not a rant.
Things that I’ve found usefull so far are:
- much easier to decide the size of larger groups
- easier to see where groups of players are formed (where players group up) during a fight
- easier to keep track of the commander tag when zergs clashes together
whats that feedback thread?

The thread is about server identities however it also goes on about how it would change a variety of things including name plates, which was discussed at length.
ah that thread,
the thread which i didn’t bother looking even though it was made by a mod
maybe i was on the other post made by that guy and the majority clearly made their point
Gate of Madness
and for the argument’s sake,
some of you guys agreed to this kitten
there are more than these…
the apple tag, the additional colored commander tag, then the !@#$ player tags….
i guess WvW can be solved by adding tags

Yet these days I play ESO more than GW2, something that would never have been the case a couple of years ago, but just shows how ESO actually improved and how as an RvR system it is more flexible at dealing with population issues.
Whilst GW2 has got worse and the inflexibility of the WvW system is a bigger issue than ever as it can’t handle the declining population, so now if I want to play outside primetime I get better action in ESO than GW2 where the game is borderline dead outside of primetime much of the time on EU and then I have to put up with queues at primetime (at least sometimes).
So if ESO is a “terrible game”, then GW2 is well…

I only liked the dots because they remind me of Christmas. Other than, ok?

I suspect that the spot was going to be a placeholder while they got an artist to knock up some rank icons, but then they realised the ranks repeat through tiers (bronze, silver etc), so abandoned the whole idea.
The design of WvW has been half-kittened since launch.
(edited by Svarty.8019)
To be honest they could do the rank icons, and then various amounts of stars to represent bronze, silver etc.
That being said, I’m not going to judge the new system for a couple more days until I can get used to it. I can see the simplicity of going down to just the colors for labels. Just means I’ll have to actually remember who is what color when making scout reports ….or just say the color cause I’m lazy.

The thread is about server identities however it also goes on about how it would change a variety of things including name plates, which was discussed at length.
I’m a little confused at how this change helps identify servers…? Was it supposed to help me see at a glance which one of my allies was on which server? Or was it supposed to make the enemy names shorter with these silly blue dots on them?
One thing it does do it make it more of a challenge for people with lower end machines. I’m having to use a lower end machine right now with degraded graphics and seeing the enemy now with the little spot instead of the red swoosh is a little tougher. Not a big deal, but requires more focus on a screen that’s already lacking in good graphics.
I seriously must have missed something here since I really am not sure what the point of the dots is.. other than to make my name smaller maybe? … and maybe now the enemy doesn’t see the gold/plat/mithril levels now and can’t find the enemy leaders as easily? Not sure… but meh, to me it seems like a non fix to something I’m not sure was a problem.
ok I did something novel and actually read the release notes.. at least I can turn it off.. yay
but still.. I am not seeing much value in this change. Also, the default should have been for things to stay the way they were and a message sent out informing that it could be changed if wanted. MANY people don’t come into the forums and seeing this dot was a shock even for some that do… ah things are back to normal now… nice and ugly but enemy easy to spot once again.

IDK I like it better than half screen full of red words, you can see zerg movements much better with the dots IMO just got to give it some time to get used to it..
At any rate, I believe the issue that most people were talking about was a “problem” of knowing what server your allies were on. What they captured/claimed etc. This enemy dot doesn’t do anything that addresses that “issue”.
I’m neutral with the addition, I just do not like it and I think it could’ve been implemented better. Get rid of the dots on pets/necro minions(?). I will be sticking to oldschool nameplates.
Why can’t we have simplified/optional abbreviated nameplates that retains server identity, especially for host servers?
EXAMPLE:
Current: Fort Aspenwood Mithril Assaulter [CAT]
Suggested: FA ? [CAT]
Note: Where ? indicates colored badge + roman numeral on top regarding rank.
You could even add a ring around the badge that indicates what color the server is (green, blue, red).
Guys it’s only been one day so far. Give it a few weeks to get something to base your feedback on. Make it constructive, not a rant.
Negative! I gave it all of 1 minute to decide (for myself of course) it was grotesque. No rant needed.
As to the other poster that suggested this solution is the result of those that whinned for server identity?
First, this solution is NOT what we asked for, and in essence seperates us (the refugees) further from our original server and our host depending on who or how the other side of the screen is viewing us.
Furthermore, depending on who is viewing us, it has the ability to take away that salty, revenge seeking angst we’ve come to love about this game mode. Afterall, how can you hunt down the Mithral X server Invader that just seige buried you, if you don’t know, or cant figure out how to find out that you’re looking for a Mitral X server Invader.
[HaHa] Hazardous Hallucination
Since the mods didn’t seem to mind silently deleting the other thread I posted in I’ll say it again here.
The implementation itself is pretty bad. I think we can agree on that. However the principle of being able to hide behind a corner without your nameplate being 10x wider than your character sounds great. Just make the little dots consistent in terms of coloring, perhaps even a little more noticeable and make the change mandatory so that nobody gets an unfair advantage.
All we wanted was a GvG.
lol, you can’t hide from people that disable that feature… :P
That’s why I said make it mandatory.
All we wanted was a GvG.
I’m happy they made an option to revert this. So people who like the dots can have them on, and those who do not like it, can change it back to what it has been for 4+ years now.
Madness Rises [Rise] – Banners Hold.
Don’t argue with idiots, they pull you down their level and own you with experience.
That’s why I said make it mandatory.
That would cause a LOT more flak than just the bit of rhetoric about the dots right now. I’m willing to bet that most people would not like that being forced on them. I for one don’t care at all about trying to figure out how many people are swooping down on me… If it’s a sea of red then it doesn’t matter if it’s 10 or 50… I’m gonna die. If I’m with another big group then it just means there’s a battle coming.. I mean who’s going to take the time to try to count the enemy.. duhh.. shoooot!
As I said in an earlier post… the original chatter about name plates was so that people could identify their linked allies easier. (Not original in this thread, but when the subject first came up)
