WvW Rewards and purpose of it?
A couple things…
“which is worse than all the other gear” – check out the appearance too, because a lot of times that’s the only thing that matters. You can reskin your current gear to look like whatever else you find.
Bonuses – right now the WvW maps reset once a day, but eventually they will be 2 week long fights. During those 2 weeks, your performance in WvW will provide your ENTIRE SERVER with boosts and bonuses.
Most importantly, though… WvWvW doesn’t need a point, WvWvW IS THE POINT!

im not saying its booring but for me as a gamer i wannt that reward i need somthing like a carrot.. taking keeps and killing donkyes i cant see myself doing that for a year.. yes the game is new but this cant be it?
The rewards is new armor/weapon skins, that’s about it.
Not sure how the armor/weapon system works for pvp, here’s a helpful link…
You don’t need to do it, you can stick to your starting gear and go with it, but it’s still something fun.
To me the point is simple, I love to kill the mean warrior that wanted to kill me. to track and take down that nasty rogue or to nuke that guy at the gate. The point to WvWvW is to take what the other guys got and you have to kill them to get that.
If I want ranking I guess I would join the tournaments but that is not for me. open WvWvW with objectives, that is what I like.
And yet another one who didn’t get the memo. WvW fun, that’s the reward. Fun. Whats the reward for playing a game of basket ball with your friends? Fun. Do you get a new pair of air Jordans for playing? No. Look, if playing the game isn’t fun, and you need a carrot to keep you motivated then you’re broken. This game wasn’t created for you.
There is a major reward though, as I said in my previous post.
Your total score from the WvWvW match provides your ENTIRE SERVER with boosts and bonuses.

dosingen you are far from alone here , there are tons of people since beta 1 screaming at Anet about adding in progression in world vs world, mike Ferguson seems to be against it. With the maps being tiny compared to DAOC , it wont be long before these guys start getting bored to , they just havent reached their time yet and the newness is still going strong. You can only take the same keep in red green or blue or tower , or run the same exactly same 3 doylak camps before you get to the point , you are like whats the point i get better money and exp in pve . If people think running in a zerge takes skill or listening to some egotistical argumentative guy in /map chat who barks orders fun , enjoy as it never changes and is stale already. Also you have servers that shouldnt even be playing with other american servers like sea of sorrows who are oceanic and take every single thing on most servers while the rest sleep then come on here bragging about it. They need a realm point system for any longevity or some sort of progression , as it is right now i can speak for 50 of us at least in guild who are getting bored to tears already with ganking in the exact same spot daily in a giant circle .

So… maybe don’t do that anymore?

We got the memo. Can still post our thoughts. There not going to change anything so don’t worry. They got our money and that is all they want. You can have your wvw cuz it’s fun and that’s it. I’ll play till something better comes along. Alot of us need something more than just playing for “fun”. your money is no better then ours. Now that I’m crying, let the flames begin
Get a decent guild with mature focused players and your WvW experience will change for the better. I don’t want more powerful items to be the reward for conquering my foes.. Better looking items is just icing on the cake. Call me simple and old fashioned, but winning is enough of a reward for me.
Just think back to your favorite SNES game. What carrot on the stick was there? You played it and hopefully beat it, and then set it down and nurtured those nostalgic memories for years. Secret of Mana made me cry. Guild Wars 2 doesn’t end however, it is persistent, and with that comes the knowledge that you can have fun as long as you want with the no-subscription-fee model meaning you can put it down like a console game if you want. And the lack of new uber powerful gear coming out every 3 months means you can pick it back up where you left off. And because of that, all the nostalgia you’re building now isn’t going anywhere. It’s always going to be there. Fun is the point and is the point of any game. Guild Wars 2 is reminding you about this, and you’re trained so hard to think MMORPG = WORK when it’s supposed to be about fun!
I just don’t understand the kids these days. Wanting to be rewarded for playing a game… a good game is fun enough that you loose sight of any carrot being dangled in front of you. That model is for games that lack fun game-play. Games should be fun, the experience of playing them should be reward enough. If that’s not the case I feel bad for you. So far this game is a blast, and to be honest I think I got my 60 bucks worth within the first 3 days.
I wonder what what those that want more want? In the old days of air warrior we played so our side could win. Sure you got a point score but when the map reset everyone started at zero. Someone with 100 points was just as deadly as someone with 10,000 as we all had access to the same planes/equipment. We paid to be entertained and to have bragging rights.
So what would you guys want? do you need a score, a title or do you need to get better gear so you can dominate those that are just starting, not because of skill but because of gear?
I am not being sarcastic I am trying to better understand.
Of course they want better gear. The wow-heads have been indoctrinated that gear = skill = leetsauce. They want one shot noobs and rub in the fact that they have no life outside of the game and get off on punishing players who aren’t “hardcore” like they are. They want their time playing to be worth more than player skill. Why should someone who just started playing be able to win? DO YOUR TIME!

My thoughts exactly. This thread should really be titled “how the subscription based ‘MMORPG’ model changed games from being about fun to being about work”, but that might not get as many hits…..
Some people just don’t like fun, they are serious of demeanor and generally look for the goal or point in anything in order to finish or win. They may claim to have fun by succeeding at their goals, but fun is not really about pride or a sense of self-satisfaction. It’s all fine and good to claim that winning or beating games is fun, but it’s just as valid for me to claim that fun is not truly dependent on success or gain of power. I would try to point out what fun really is, and the differences between fun and pride but the people I am talking about wouldn’t understand anyway. That’s all fine, in fact there is nothing wrong with not liking things just for fun, no one ever said you had to. Talking about needing a reward to have fun though, what is really being said is “I need a reward to get the sense of pride and accomplishment which I desire”. To have fun, you just have to be open to the possibility of fun itself…… Okay, enough philosophy.
To be fun, a game needs to be fair and balanced. Carrot-stick uber-powered gear rewards are actually anti-fun. This is why such successful (read: having millions of lifelong players and fans over the course of decades/centuries) games as chess, basketball/football/etc. have balanced designs based on the enjoyment of the game itself rather than gaining rewards which give advantages against opponents. Okay, really enough philosophy now…..
People play for longer and more fervently when they have reward systems based on their level of play. Carrots keep people playing long after shiny-ness wears off. There’s a reason that progression systems are built into games like Call of Duty these days.
It’s not about “kids these days”. That’s a short sighted response. It’s about what makes people want to keep playing. Eschewing a progression system means people are less likely to keep coming back.
Daoc-like rp system is needed.
WvW is fun for a short time but then it gets old and boring.
I hope anet doesn’t care about fanboys keep yelling NO ITS FUN WE DONT WANT REWARDS because its human nature. We do.
Maybe I’m the minority, but I love WvW for what it is. The fact that I get xp and items out of it is like a bonus. Nothing is better than being outnumbered and stopping a zerg from capturing a point. It’s all I can do to stop my asura from dancing the robot.
player skill? are you serious? there is no player skill in world vs world . You run a premade and you have two options gank FOR the zerge and take camps or hit stragglers which is 2 to 3 at a time and get bored or you fight with the zerge using siege weapons which is not fun for anyone who enjoys pvp. Also what is wrong with progression? oh I see some people here just like to be able to play once a week and destroy people who been playing daily and want a little progression? Trust me majority of the serious pvpers here are going to leave world vs world as we were promised something similiar to DAOC and ended up with something similiar to 3 way pong. DAOC was about 8 man teams fighting each other , the zerges were for noobs who were just bads in pvp. DAOC didn’t offer gear , they offered a realm point system where players who dedicated themselves to pvp were rewarded for it. But people here complaining about gear and progression are really just the wow kids not us, we actually want to work hard to goal towards something , not just come out here and think we are entitled to the same thing as someone who wants to world vs world once a week or month.
The “they want better gear” statement is getting old. Nobody said that I’ve read that they want better gear. “stat wise anyways”.. The good players just want recognized for there accomplishments. What’s wrong with that?
I would imagine that eventually there will be something like the Camelot Herald that will show you rankings of people and stats and it’s just not finished yet.
It would be interesting to see a Realm Rank type system put into place but it needs to be done correctly or it will unbalance things in much the same way DaoC had for awhile back before ToA.

i made this thread to tell people its possible to implement a wvw progression system without grinding/snowballing/imbalancing but some fanboys are eighter tookittenstupid or they are trolling =>
thats what we want to see is a realm point system , balanced or not honestly i could care less at this point i just would like to see some sort of progression other then 80 exp a kill and some karma for taking some spot on the map. I could care less myself about gear , i just want something in game that makes world vs world unique and stands out from if im just doing pvp or pve etc. What happens when you 5 man a dungeon at the end? do you not get a piece of gear? and whats the point of killing a boss in dungeons ? does group members not say hey that item sucks or is good? why should world vs world be any different without some form of progression to make it more competitive ?
A few points I want to express my opinion on here. First, when you do something in a MMO you expect some kind of reward for it, and I think the reward system for WvWvW right now works perfectly. I say this because I use it mainly to level up and the karma gear I can get is usually better than most drops. (I don’t bother buying gear for gold, needs to be replaced too fast.) Another point to stress is that in general the karma gear you get in WvWvW has stats that would generally suit a WvWvW player, equally the dungeon reward vendors have gear mainly suited for PvE, andfrom what I have seen crafting can get you anything but I havent looked into that. (I personally does not find the general stats on karma gear to suit my playstyle.) Third, You MUST remember that WvWvW, althought it is a form of PvP, it’s not ranked PvP. If you play structured PvP you will gain glory in stead of exp which counts towards a PvP rank. The difference GW2 has in ranked PvP from other games is that everyone is equal right from the start; all skills and traits unlocked, and all PvP gear (withing heavy/medium/light categories of course) has the same stats, and you can configure the runes to your taste, and upgrades in rank only allow you cosmetic upgrades.
I don’t know about the tech behind much of this, but I do believe they need to do something about the WvWvW so that more people can play it at the same time, and maybe try to match servers with somewhat equal active WvWvW players against each other.
Please remember that this is only my opinion and that I don’t want any flak for it, but constructive criticizm to point out flaws in my opinion is appreciated.
I am loving wvwvw simply because of this. I was a WoW player for 5 years (till halfway through cata) and for someone like me this model is great. It does not matter if I play this mode for 6 hours or 1 hour a day, after a week or two I will still be on the same playing field as everyone else. It makes gear a secondary thought to skill, which I feel is the way that these things work. Also, as others have pointed out, there are rewards throughout the week but they are server wide, not just for your single character.
Please, for the love of God, no gear rewards! Titles, rankings, pretty baubles, increased storage, etc, etc are ok. Do not listen to people who want a grind and imbalance WvWvW . Daoc ruined their game with toa because they listened to people like this.
DAOC ruined their game with master levels from TOA not artifacts , infact most enjoyed the artifacts in game and leveling them up. Even with master levels a realm rank 7 or 8 vs a realm rank 2 or 3 with master levels still lost every fight by being level 51 and having stronger stats. People like to blame TOA for being the demise of DAOC when just because “YOU” left daoc doesn’t mean everyone else did for the same reasons. While TOA was a disappointment to most for the grinding of master levels and opening up artifact encounters , it still was not the death of the game by far as you are making it out to be , the game continued to gain players and release other expansions , so please enough of the drama and false information.
Most often cited reason for people leaving was toa, like it or not. Not the place to debate it, but there are many of us who never want to see forced pve to compete in WvWvW ever, ever again. Not false drama at all. Mythic admitted it was a disaster, and Firor quit over it. Levelling artifacts and getting the scrolls were forced pve. Many of us hated that crap.
If fun isn’t why you play, why do you play at all then?
Seriously though, rewards are the normal money/exp/karma and WvW score bonuses. Then there’s the badge armour which I believe has a unique skin, and GW2 continues the trend that rare or hard to get stuff you work for a lot doesn’t make you more powerful but gives you special looks.
The carrot on the stick is not in guild wars 2 because it doesn’t have to be. Unlike WoW or similar carrot-on-stick MMO’s, gw2 doesn’t have a subscription fee so they don’t need to make people grind for months to attain some goal in order to make money. They make money from people that have fun in the game and think it’s worth putting money into for small bonuses.
And even in WvW, there’s so much to do. You can go out solo and cap sentries (or gank other loners, but that hardly serves any purpose), go in with a party or a small group of randoms and go for camps, go into a random zerg and cap kitten, or actually organise things with a guild etc.
ArenaNet is going to have to add meaningful individual (and, I hope guild) rewards to WVW.
Sandbox play is fun short term. Serverwide bonuses are fine. But it you don’t provide individuals with personal motivation to go take that keep for the 14th (or 400th) time, then you’re going to see the number of people in WVW begin to spiral downward.
I agree that DAOC had the best system. If ANet doesn’t have something like that in development, they need to start it today.
Man you guys all seriously missed the boat.
The long term fun in WvW is gaining influence for your GUILD because the game is GUILD WARS, not “I am Rambo and I am gonna pwn you”.
You can unlock FANTASTIC upgrades and features in the Guild Panel, more are on the way. If you haven’t seen a fully upgraded keep then you are missing the point of WvW.
On a personal level you can benefit greatly from the upgrades gained by your GUILD in WvW. Get in game hit “G” and scroll through all of the options. This is a wargame which benefits your guild and all of its players in the long run.
A good WvW Guild a couple months from now will have massive buffs from any of their defensive structures, access to vendors etc. You setup your own base of operation.
Right now with WvW on a 24 hour timer you can’t appreciate the value of a well defended structure and regardless of how big your zerg is you won’t be able to “beat the door in” without tactics and expensive Superior siege weaponry.
Also mentioning gear, toughness is a survivability stat. Go read about it, do some testing. Think of it like resilience if you can’t find another comparison. If you have a full WvW set and are running an even slightly tanky build you know how well you can survive against 4 or 5 players. Alas, most people are running glass cannon builds.
Regarding organize teams: There is a lot more to do than just farm elites, cap camps and run around picking off zergs. We consistently down entire groups of 40-50 players by baiting them into camps loaded with siege, this is with 3 groups average.
If you are in a WvW guild and you feel like you are out of things to do, you should definately consider moving on to a guild that takes WvW seriously.
I wonder what what those that want more want? In the old days of air warrior we played so our side could win. Sure you got a point score but when the map reset everyone started at zero. I am not being sarcastic I am trying to better understand.
Score/Title, yes. Better gear, no.
Perhaps there already is such a system in the game but if there is it’s not very obvious.
A good example would be the Conqueror/Justicar title from WoW, achieved by becoming exalted with the 3 classic battleground factions.
It’s not something you do in a few days or weeks. If you farmed hardcore it’d take MONTHS. There needs to be a system, perhaps a ranking system, to show people that you’re dedicated!
Noone is asking for pve grind to be effective in pvp. We are asking some ranking or MINOR stat bonuses on individual scale. Not grinding items.
How hard is that?
I just don’t understand the kids these days. Wanting to be rewarded for playing a game… a good game is fun enough that you loose sight of any carrot being dangled in front of you. Sigh, A good game can be both fun AND rewarding. It is better to have them both than just fun. One does not exclude other. Even Battlefield 3 has more character progresion than GW2. I am enjoying GW2 at the moment, but I doubt it can keep my interest for long for that particular reason.
Ye there needs to be a reward system imo, lvl 80 now with lvl 80 gear, no need for karma/xp or badges of honor
im judging all of you that cant see my point now and gussing you havent hit 80 yet.. the leveling in gw2 from my experience of mmo’s (daoc wow) it beats both. Rewarding and fun jusst zerging stuff and rewarding from level 0 to 80.. But are you defending WvW reward system where you need to loot after your kills? And im not looking for a wow system with gear rewards. im pointing out its a lack of some sort of reward that says “hey good work killing xxx enimes for this you get this usless mount?” Anything works!
Badges you loot? can you defend this and saying WvW is solid and you will play it for years???? if you can i salute you!
The Rest of the game has differnt looking gear through the game. Look at all the PvE instances and you can easily see the different looking gear. In WvW we have 1 set of gear which (for leather) looks good and i would wear, but other people dont feel the same.
In a game based on style and titles we should have much more depth in WvW than the one set and titles based on how many Dolyaks i saw people escorting. Gear skin and titles visible to all realms in the match up (ie were not just invaders or defenders) would be the best thing to really have that progression IMO.
Rankings/Titles – Yes
Gear/Stats – No
Nothing to imbalance things, only cosmetic. (DO NOTE: Rankings/Titles ARE cosmetics)
Well to be honest, I don’t care about the grear kittens who want their epic carrots on a stick. If you cant appreciate the game for what it is that’s YOUR problem. A-net has your money and will use some of it to make more content, weather or not you decide to stick around. The current rewards (cosmetics) are fine for the core audience this game was sold to. If you’re one of the disappointed bunch that wanted this game to be an epic time sync with carrots on sticks ala-wow, then I for one am happy that you are sad. I have a life, a job and a girlfriend and I don’t plan to spend 20hours a week grinding for stat increases just so I can be competitive in WvW. We (the target audience) want to log in for a few hours at our leisure and feel just as relevant on the battle field as the 15 year old basement dwellers who spend 40+ hours a week in the game. We understand that you want to “stand out from others” based on your achievements, and that’s why you will probably look cooler than many of us, but we can still go toe to toe with you in our noob armor.
Age of Conan started on the right track, but since the game was launched too early it was unable to deliver what was promised to its target audience (skill based pvp) so the money heads of Funcom forced the devs to switch gears and try to stop the financial hemmoraging by revamping the itemization ala wow. Now look at the server populations… The pve cry babies got their gear based progression and grindtastic alternate advancement system, but that didn’t save AOC. However, Gw2 is a far better product than what AOC was at launch, so it’s not likely that it will need “saving” any time soon.
I apologize if I sound abrasive, but I am very passionate about this subject and have been waiting for a game like Gw2 when it pertains to skill>gear in pvp. I think I speak for a lot of people when I defend the current design. Ranks, titles, awesome looking skins… I’m all for it. Keep stats out of the pvp progression curve post 80.
There always needs to be a carrot. Anet will need to keep adding more and more variations to gear or something to improve your character/appearance. Otherwise it will still get old.
Sure, and as long as they are purely cosmetic than I hope they add a ton.

feels like your trying your best profiling me.. got 2 kids wife and a wrk beat you with 2 kids yes?. and your completly missing the point PvP part excelent PvE as goes for leveling fine. Since the already put vendors with gear that you buy with badges you get from killing the already don “wow” way?! But its a strange way to do it.. i loot bags wich if im lucky i get a badge wich in some cases i forget to loot or i die and miss to loot? fair system you think? it dosent feel like its complet. saying at level 60 you can buy gear that cost like alot of badges same at level 70 and at 80.. i sure as hell dont feel that the system the made is complet. So should you spend your hard earnd badges or is this gona change?

Theese kind of comments make my laugh my jeans off. Idiots like this should not play MMOs. You are uneducated in them and should not be making posts as you can only reference 1 or 2 games and calling people from WoW “Hardcore” in terms of pvping is blasphemy. The games you dont know like Asheron’s Call for example came out in 1999 which is probably one of the top longest running pay to play games was, and still is to an extent, based on skill over gear and they still reward you and the reward in the game is way better then in any other game ive played thus far not only do you get bragging rights you take the most valuable items from their inventory and if people do not carry more valuable items then their armor they lose some armor or weapons on top of that theese players gain a penalty to their stats which they have to earn expericence to lose and they cannot pvp for 5 mins or something like that. While like all other games that game had its flaws too theese games nowadays are crap including this one. Whats the fun in not getting any type of reward from killing someone? MMOs are slowly being turned into a kitteny generic game for people who do not want to work at all for anything. If you have even a couple hours a day you should have still been able to compete in WoW and if you put 2 geared max level characters into a 1v1 fight it still comes down to skill. Also, you are failing to see that this game in fact is a watered down(for kitten clowns like you) copy of wow with alot less content which is why its free to play. Yes i spend my time playing and it is nice to have some sort of reward to my character. Just like playing basketball with your friends. Yea you have fun but it also helps you get in shape and you get better at it the more you play…..NBA players didnt pick it up and play once a week with their friends and thats why they are better then us so please just please stop posting stupid kitten about how everyone should be equal at everything no matter how much effort they wanna put into it. I could go on for days but ill start straying from the real topic which is 90% of people who play MMOs would like to get better stuff as they progress and defeat other players in pvp.

Wow, so aggressive and insulting… and yet here you are asking for a reason to play a game.
Call it whatever you want, but the fact is you need a reason to play. Doesn’t matter why, that’s for you and your counselor to discuss.
The rest of us just play the game because it’s fun. When it isn’t fun, we stop playing.
Getting cool stuff is cool, but it is a side affect of playing a game that is fun.
It really is that simple.
November 15, 2012 – The day a dream died.
The reason to play any video game: To have fun.
