I couldn’t be sure if this thread would be a violation to the Forum Rules/Code of Conduct, however it is just something I wish to know of its possibilities.

Moderators, feel free to delete the thread if such topic is not allowed.

While my guild and i were having a break from Borderlands and chillout at EoTM for fast World Ranks leveling, we encountered something rather unpleasant.

As the ‘outnumbered’ side, we always struggle to take objectives and hence bunker down at our keep is the only way we can ensure supplies up for every WP. When we had every siege built up, i find it odd that our supplies keep draining.

It was a guild (a famous guild i would say, and notorious in the early years of GW2), building up catapults to destroy and rebuild the bridges for achievements. We understand the need for achievement, as we did it too. However, zergs from 2 enemy worlds are inbound (pincer atk) and we needed to stock up supplies for repair and siege up. Hence we repeatedly plead for a halt to their achievement hunt. Until things get nasty and they drain even more supplies.

I admit i was furious, as that was not teamplay and will cost us our lost. It was a very selfish move imo.

Things fell apart after that.

Pincer attack started, we barely hold up, supplies all drained, siege all destroyed and we couldn’t rebuild our defenses. We fought back 2 waves of zergs from 2 different home worlds.

This was when I felt something is off.

The guild who deliberate drain our supplies all rep up another guild. They never join fights, they took our siege and deliberately aim off the targets, we never had a chance to recover. The strength of the zerg keeps growing each wave. Until they hit a number of 60-70, they revive faster we can kill. It was this last fight, that particular guild was gone. No where to be seen. And our keep finally fall.

(despite that, we were proud to have defended against so many waves while being ‘outnumbered’ LOL)

When we tried to take back our keep, it was already siege up. We realized they placed the siege weapons exactly where we build them, they used the exact same tactic against us.

Is it true you can see so much of enemies siege wpn placement when they’re built out of sight above the walls?

Since then we can never catch a break even when we’re just a small squad trying to get minor objectives for exp. This particular zerg that stampede our keep always sneak up on us no matter where we go, as if they knew our commander route pattern. I can’t help, thinking we were revealed. They seems to know more than they should.

SO, are spies still active? Are there still people selling information about their own homeworld? What can we do to prevent them? Or are they acceptable ‘tactics’?

Time to change servers, sounds like to me. A server with spies will always be bound to become a rat’s nest.

This is where Shadowbane proved superiority over realm-based pvp games. It had no “realms”, but guilds in control of cities. A guild leader can kick a spy out of the guild and keep the city. But there is nothing a realm can do to kick a spy guild out. Maybe implement a system of voting? Guild leaders maybe should have power to kick a guild out of WvW by popular vote?

I would say they’re still active, but I haven’t personally had any problems/encounters with them lately.

As for being an “acceptable tactic”, I don’t think there’s anything explicitly in the EULA or otherwise that prevents such action. Also, and don’t quote me on this, I believe ANet has said something to the effect of “it’s part of the game”. I think it’s more that it’s just too problematic to enforce, and if you empower players to handle the issues directly it makes it completely open for corruption/abuse. So, the only real way you can prevent them is keep your eyes out for them, report them, and hope something is done about them.

I think ANet does try to oust them when they get to be a big problem, but it’s hard to spot them sometimes unless they’re doing things out in the open (i.e. occupying seige needlessly, building rams in random places, buying upgrades for no reason, &c.). If they’re just listening in, it’s more or less impossible to tell. That’s part of the reason people end up using VOIP applications. You can enforce the channel yourself and prevent the in-game spies from intercepting communications via map/team chat.

If worse comes to worse, you can always try a lower tier server. They’re naturally less likely to possess spies since the people there are less likely to pay for them due to lower stakes and generally less activity.

Umm…. I’d just pity them for there is no bridge achievement this time.

Using catapults for the achievement is stupid anyway. Mecha Devourer form attacks faster and saves on supplies. Not to mention that Badlands has a Reactor sitting right underneath a bridge for super fast resupply after destroying it.

ANet allows players to have multiple accounts and allows those accounts to be on different servers.

Unlike DAoC where doing that would result in a ban.

Given that ANet allows players to exist in multiple different WvW servers at the same time in GW2, I can’t see how anything written in the EULA could be enforced, even if something written was actually there.

Unfortunately, there are players who do use multiple accounts to their advantage.

Spies are different than griefers though.

Griefers, unfortunately also exist in WvW and aren’t necessarily spies. They will drain supply, build golems and walk them off cliffs, etcetera.

Hard to report them, but if you find evidence in chat, screenshots and any supporting documentation you have needs to go to support.

As for spies, Voice chat does not necessarily eliminate them either. Often times a commander that suspects there are spies present will avoid map chat altogether and tag down (asking players to target mark the commander instead) which allows the commander to run “stealth” mode across the map, using only /say to communicate needs to a PuG.

I’m sorry you’re experiencing some of the “dirtier” sides of WvW. Hang in there and good luck. In the end, a tiny minority of players fall into this bucket and overall cannot manage to submarine a determined server.
