WvW Titles pointless?
The other day I realized something about WvW titles. First is that you don’t actually get a “title” that you can display, it’s a title the enemies see you with. Enemies can’t see who you are, you’re just an enemy with a different title after [some sever]. Your allies can’t see your title either because there’s no way to display it.
What I realized is this: no one in the game other than yourself knows that you have a specific title.
LOL
That’s kinda funny.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
It’s probably on the leaderboards that are coming soon.
I was thinking about this the other night also…. Then I realized that the monkey living in my closet knows what rank I am also so its all good!
Ya know you have a really good point. Ranks/titles are kind of supposed to be a bragging rights thing but right now the only person who knows that you have a specific rank is yourself. Even with these new titles you are still just a nameless enemy. A big aspect of bragging/showing off is people knowing WHO accomplished something. Right now that doesn’t happen
The new titles are not completely pointless though. At least you will have an idea of how experienced a player you may choose to fight could be. The higher the rank the more time they have spent in WvW and they COULD be more experienced/skilled. But other than that the whole bragging rights thing just doesn’t really exist.
I completely agree! I would love if my WvW titles were added to my achievement panel list. I do not care about any of my other titles on there.
However — and this probably goes without saying — I cannot stand how the titles are permanently displayed under character’s names now. So, 1. Revert how titles used to be displayed before this patch; 2. Make it so that the WvW titles can be displayed in the achievement panel list.

Well rank just tell who ride most in karma train. Kind of pointless.

The WvW rank, it is like a finger pointing a way to the moon. Don’t concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory. Do you understand?

I don’t see how the new titles relate to a meaningful accomplishment at all. As you say, about all they represent is how long somebody has spent in WvW, whether that time was spent doing something useful or not. I spent at least an hour last night fighting on the road between lowlands and SM in EB. There were two large groups of players pushing each other back and forth, constantly being refreshed by the nearby waypoints. It was admittedly fun but totally pointless and soon boring, and as a thief all I had to do was periodically stealth up to the front of the enemy, daggerstorm the crap out of them, stealth back out and stand at the back of our group waiting for loot bags to drop at my feet and points to stack up. Totally mindless in the context of WvW.

They paint a nice big target. The higher the title on an enemy, the more I want to kill that enemy.

The XP/titles are purely a measure of time-played. You don’t get more/less credit for solo kills or high rank so it’s just going to be a list of people who do World vs Door the most.

I try to die often so that the enemy doesn’t get very many points for it.

An accomplishment is an accomplishment. I never said anything was meaningful.

I think there may be more to it than that. Even if someone is just “riding the karma train”, if they have 500 ranks that means a lot more than someone with 20. Every achievement/title in the game is basically an indicator of how much time you spent on that particular thing, the WvW ranks are just like any other accomplishment in the game.
We we’re discussing this topic a little in guild chat yesterday, in a way its sad that people can’t see how much time you’ve put into wvw, but it also discourages elitism based simply on time in wvw.
Personally i can only play maybe 6-8 hours a week, and I don’t consider myself a wvw god but id like to think that I have a better than average understanding of the strategies involved. I don’t think id like to log on in a week or two and be told I can’t do X because I’m only rank 10, or hear ‘need some r20+ to come ninja something’.
Guild mates echoed the sentiment that while the best way to get WXP is just by karma-training through low population maps, its not a measure of anything more important that time spent in wvw, which in many cases has nothing whatsoever to do with skill or understanding.

I think that’s a concern and it’s also one that Anet brought up, but I don’t see something like that being common, especially outside of tier one. I have a feeling that almost all of the community will not take issue with it unless it’s very very low. Like achievement points, unless someone has a very low amount, you don’t really worry about how good they are so long as they have at least a minimum level.
lol…….. All a title says is how much time you spend in the game.
I got to rank 8 first day/night after patch, and had to ask myself; “Do you really want to spend this much time in a game that needs better PvP rather than the massive zerg fests farming rank off each other?”
No, really I don’t because it isn’t an indication of skill at all, but a indication of time spent. So I went with the wife last night to watch “The Host”, and will be taking my family tonight to watch; “GI Joe”.

They need leaderboards for any of it to have merit.
World of Warcraft had excellent battleground leaderboards in its heyday (vanilla). Not sure how many people remembered the online leaderboards for its battlegrounds. Rank 1 – 14. Anything above Rank 6 was usually regarded a good player, and Rank 10+ were your cream of the crop. Of course by the end of the Rank 14 era you had a lot of win-trading, but for awhile it was a good indicator of ski—-oh who am I kidding it was a gear-based PvP game and more about time spent than skill, but it was still fun.
I think the titles should be based on how you play WvW. Meaning, if you zerg and earn WXP with a lot of people in your immediate vicinity then get credit toward a large scale battle rank. If you prefer to fight in smaller skirmishes you should get a rank and WXP for that style of play. Skirmishers could be special forces…however, I would play for the rank of yak lover myself! Wait, maybe yak escort…oh crap can’t state this in anyway that is fit for children.
Perfect Dark [PD] – Yaks Bend
Even with the leaderboards, it’s kinda pointless. Since the ranking is characterbound, you’ll just see characternames on the leaderboard. And that means it won’t mean anything which ranks you have, because you would have so many different ranks it’s hard to determine who is actually better/more experienced/etc. The players who play on 1 character only will have a higher rank (thus a better score on the leaderboard) than those who play on 8.
The only thing I can think of right now that would solve the issue I mentioned above is if the leaderboard actually combines all your character ranks and shows which ACCOUNT is where on the leaderboard. Not the characters. I couldn’t care less if PlayerA is rank 37, 156, 2731, 2810, 5203, 8629, 13375 and 22103 all at the same time. So meaningless.

Would be true if they had this since the launch of the game.
Example: Player A plays 3 hours a day since the launch. Player B plays 6 hours a day since the wvw ranking was implemented. Right of the bat, Player B will have a higher ranking than player A, when Player A obviously has more experience with the game.

I agree, it’s silly?
Suggestion 1-Rank Badges to signify what rank you are, it comes after the map completion star. Makes it more akin to most world militaries and groups. Not that it’s needed, but would tell all anytime of the day that your char spends time doing something in WvW.
Suggestion 2-Refer to suggestion 1. jk…I think it will work tho.
Side note off-topic, I hope the leaderboards does something similar to other large battle games, track everything.
You got a KB with a scepter, track it. It’s already being tracked up to a point during weaponmaster, now if they can track players killing players only from WvW, that would be sweet. Everything else is pretty much already tracked.
I like how it is now. I don’t really care for the enemy to know my name or other achievements; I’m already fairly easy to identify in the field anyway. I don’t understand the desire for all of the senseless bragging and posturing.

The idea is that if you’re given a title, it doesn’t have any meaning if no one can see it. With the way it’s set up, it would make more sense for there to be achievement points with each level instead of getting titles that no one can see. Why make a title that no one can identify, they might as well not exist at all in their current state.
I think a better idea would be to make the WvW titles available like all of the other achievements but as an optional, ie: The player can select if they are to be shown, like the achievement titles are now.
Gandara
Let’s not forgot, as Centrix mentioned, it’s a “title” per character. Obviously if I have 9 characters (I do) I’m diluting my points by a factor of 9. Making titles and points completely meaningless to me in the grander scheme of things.

So true.. the mindless zergy players are obviously going to have a higher rank than people like me who just roams or goes in small groups.. then again Anet wants WvW to be filled with non-skilled zerglings!
Zyaq – Warrior
Meh i’m annoyed with it as well, I was one of the players who did 3hrs a day since BWEs and all of it leading, now patch comes along and mindless blob farmers are in much higher regard, even though I have 10x more experience than any of them wish these things were retroactive; kind of annoying I’m way behind anyone in my guild despite being the Commander and leader…

Titles are about as pointless as winning your tiers. % increase in gathering or <insert random skill> here, woop-deee-dooo.
Peeps join em cause they like pvp, nothing more nothing less.
Good point raised here.
I wish I could see my guildmate’s wvw ranks. Maybe throw in an emote like /rank for PvP ?
The ranks right now don’t show ur skill or anything. It only show how much u play wvw a day. That is all. Its a stupid thing Anet add to the game just so they can say ohh we care about wvw
Regardless just as they had in Aion you should have an option to display people WvW ranks. I don’t see the benefit in keeping that secret.

Titles have always been there and especially in GW1, there’s a group of people who really value titles, not everyone cares, but plenty do.
