Appologies in advance if i’m asking about something obvious, but this happened to me for the first time.

I play on Blacktide. Today i was pvp’ing some warrior from Whiteside Ridge in front of his homebase. After he died i got a party invitation from “Whiteside Ridge Invader”. After i ignored it for some minutes he whispered me and started talking some nonsense.
How was this possible?

He could probably see your account or character name in the invitation if he was far enough away from you that “blahblah Invader/Defender” didn’t show up instead (or if you were on different maps at that point).

I know for certain that character names will show up in the invitation if either of you had switched maps.

I see, so long story short: this wasn’t any secret official feature, just a bug abuse?

Not even an abuse really. All they have to do is either click on you and type /invite or /join .. an icon will pop up on your screen and it’s up to you to click the green check mark to invite them into group or not. (I believe, however, even if you don’t check the green check mark, and just leave the invite hanging, after a while your name appears, but again you can counter this by xing out quickly). Unless they are specifically using your account name you use here to post to send you a whisper, there is no other way of them knowing your character name to send you a whisper, and you have to allow it on your end by clicking that green check mark.

That said, I find being able to speak with the enemy incredibly useful. We’ve had a few incidents where hacking is involved and me typing /invite or /join lets me talk with someone on the other team right away to try to resolve it, instead of the usual that goes on in this forum of people coming here with accusations and creating drama.

I’d hate to see this feature taken away, simply for that reason alone. Solve the issue privately and in-game rather than fanning the flames here.

As well, most convos I’ve had with the enemy have been pleasant. I actually enjoy talking to folks from other servers. And others use the /invite function to do small skirmishes or duels.

The control, ultimately is yours when it comes to this. Just don’t accept the invite if you don’t want to talk to them, or accept it if you do.

I agree with Jayne. The most fun night on WvW I have had in the past few weeks have when us (NSP) and (HoD) have connected to have a laugh and maybe a few 1v1/2v2 duels. Since ultimately the issue is in your control there is no reason to remove it. Its not like they can spy on you but joining without you knowing and it even says that someone from another server has requested to join your party.

They just need to make this a feature. Add an option “allow enemy communication” Y/N then support it. Some want it, some don’t. Let the players choose. Anyone who argues it will promote x-realming, that’s already happening via voice and other means.

I love talking to the enemy sometimes. Most of the time, the people on the other end are pretty cool about it, too.

Thanks for bringing some light into this, everyone.

For me the /bow, /salute, /laugh emotes are the only form of communication i need to show respect/contempt to other players, but i guess it’s pretty much individual.

Yeah i never liked how they try to make the wvwv as ’’robotic’’ as possible, no communication of any kind with the enemy they are just ’’invaders’’ and you need to kill them.

Talking to them should be intended, not a bug.

Yea because the PvE side of this game is not restricted by server. You can guest anywhere. Your friends list can have people from any server. All you need to whisper someone no matter the server is their acct name.

I hope they don’t fix this because it’s very fun and friendly rivalries are healthy for a game. For instance, last match-up there was a group of 5 players from the opposing server that were very organized and slaughtering our zerg, many times their numbers. On my Thief I started to harass them at inopportune times and tried to annoy them as much as possible. It worked, I eventually got a party invite from them to duel and such (lost terribly to one that swapped to a glam/blind/duelist spec). In the end, it turned out one of them was an enemy I knew from when I played Aion. It was fun to chat with them for a bit. That’s a big part that is missing from WvW is community/rivalry building with the enemy.
