This type of progression is dumb and meaningless. Plus its tied to an “every kid gets a trophy” exp system.

This is an unstructured format and as such there’s little to use as a ranking gauge aside from time spent playing; you cannot, for example, gauge win/loss ratio. The best they can do is add some sort of experience growth for holding and defending a tower as well as staking claim to it. While the former is easy to reward with a properly scaled defense event, rewarding “claiming” is harder because who do you reward?

It’s hard to reward defending anything because it would inevitably lead to people who afk camp a tower to get infinite rank points. just tape down your auto-attack button and profit.

I always earn gold in WvW… maybe die less?

I don’t, but then again that’s because I spend most of my time doing kitten like pumping my money into towers, camps and keeps to get them upgraded. Then running the yaks while attempting to hold off thieves, mesmers, eles or large groups that can just driveby them like they’re nothing.

You know, the logistics stuff no one wants to do because there’s no incentive to do so, and after this patch it seems there will be even less reason to do them because hey, wvw progression? Best way to do that is zerg zerg zerg and tag as much as you can.

I’m not even mad that I’ll still get mediocre/no rewards for doing what I do, it’s a job that needs to be done and I’m happy to do it.

I’m just mad that there’s going to be even fewer people willing to lend a hand when it’s needed because it’ll cut into their shiny new realm rank grinding.

Actually, with this “zerg reinforcement patch” coming, I’ve re-upped my subscription to DAoC. Am I gonna QQ and say I’ll NEVER play GW2 again? No….. that’s a childish attitude. But this does dampen my drive for WvW.
Still enjoy tPvP though, so I’ll be doing that on occasion for sure.

Yes we wanted a progression system but wanted a system that actually made us better against enemy “players”. Example, (5% reduced damage from ranged enemy player attacks ). Making us more effective against guards, is still PVE.

This is a make or break patch for alot of WvW players. I fear alot of people are going to stop playing and just wait for TESO’s 3way realm vs realm

Orbs were not a bad idea or worng, they were just done horribly wrong in GW2. They are huge factor, goal and motivation in DAOC.

Was 3 things GW2 didnt do that they needed to.
(1) your orb should be in the hardest keep to take. instead they had in in the open with just gaurds protecting. having it behind walls would actually give defenders time to get there and …defend
(2) you NEED your orb to gain teh efefcts of controlling an enemy’s orb
(3) when you own an enemy orb, the keep it is in becomes less effective, own 2 enemy orbs those keeps are very vulnerable. guards, gate, walls all much less efefctive, making it very hard for your side to keep those orbs from the other 2 sides.

The most you’re going to see in “overhauls” are some nerfs/buffs of a few skills, but mostly bug fixes. So if you consider the class changes we got last patch “overhauls” then yes, we are getting them. To the rest of us though we are getting underwhelming class changes coupled with changes that make us question whether ArenaNet plays the game at all.

I understand this is a stepping stone for WvW, but we already waited 7 months for this and it should have been in at launch. Unless they have a large amount of WvW changes in addition to this progression system, this patch will probably cause a lot of people to stop playing. This system should not have taken 7 months even for a single person to program, I mean it’s a basic UI and passive bonuses. WvW is stale and lacks depth, a progression system with passive bonuses like we’ve seen will not address that at all. Most people are not going to be revitalized in WvW by working towards taking 5% less siege damage. People want new maps, new siege, and new mechanics; without any of those this is yet another lackluster patch.

A team with superior numbers, no matter how hunkered down you might be, will win by attrition ~ that’s standard warfare (in our current format death is punished by being unable to help and attrition swings both ways for attackers and defenders depening on which half of the map they are in). There is no viable way to punish attrition tactics without wholesale making people terrified of dying because this is a week long format.

People complain enough as it is about a repair fee…

Progression is simply incentive; it’ll help retain players, but it won’t bring back players who have left WvW due to fundamental design issues. I don’t recall these players specifically asking for “progression,” either. Purpose and engagement maybe, but not “progression.”

“Progression” is simply the simplest and cheapest way for the devs to distract players from fundamental design flaws in the basic game. Can’t make the game more creative? Can’t afford to make the game refresh itself so it doesn’t get boring? Can’t figure out how to add more depth to the game? Just add “progression” and pretend it’s content.

Personally, I don’t understand why players ever fall for this kind of ploy. The donkey that settles for chasing the carrot at the end of the stick may not realize there is no worthwhile end objective, but humans should be able to figure that out.

No one is going to res you in the middle of battle (from defeated) because it takes a colossal amount of time to do if you are in combat (and anyone waiting to be ressed in a heated battle is wasting time and should be running back). They will res you after the battle, in which case you’ve contributed and accomplished nothing… hence your death was punished by you doing nothing.

Some of things you say make me wonder what game you’re actually playing.

A lot of players early on were asking for both leaderboards and progression, and now a different crowd is out complaining about getting it. Fixing problems takes time, adding things that the player base wants takes time, and in the end it seems the most talkative people are the least willing to wait. Keep up the good work Anet, I might not be a fan of progression but at least I know the meaning of patience.

It’s difficult to give people passive abilites while not giving them an advantage to other people. I think these abilities look fine, i’ll still be able to 1v2 people even if they have grinded the karma-(and now wXP)express to get higher ranks.

Its not SPvP, If you start thinking that passive abilities you gain from rank in World vs World shouldn’t give you an advantage, You’re not really getting the concept.

Rank should give an advantage, and it should help in fights against players…DAOC did it this way, and if you’re going to copy a game, at least copy the good parts about it…

The whole kittenfooting around that Developers take now a days in these game mechanics is getting annoying very fast.

Am I looking at these abilities wrong?…
Siege might – Increase siege-engine? damage done
Siege bunker – Reduce siege damage taken

In a couple months when everyone has max on these, doesn’t it take us back to where we started? (assuming the percentage change is the same for each)

Doesn’t it only discourage new people from getting into WvW? They are less effective defending a tower via siege and get owned by siege when trying to attack a tower.

I suppose it’s hard to tell at this point without seeing the actual increases and decreases these will provide.

ps. does “siege-engine” refer to a specific type of siege only?

There is a fine line, Balancing it is the key…

The difference between Rank 1 and Rank 10 in DAOC was massive…

The difference between a Rank 5 and a Rank 10 wasn’t something that couldn’t be overcome (and past that it got even easier)

It took very little time to go from Rank 1 to Rank 5…compared to Rank 5 to Rank 10.

Was the Rank 1 person at a disadvantage in PvP?
Yes, But it should always be that way…Giving everyone a trophy for logging in makes for dull gameplay..

It’s already been stated on these forums that this update will add in new gear for WvW… multiple times in fact. So your first point is just wrong.

The new gear means new exotic type gear avaible through badges, that is, zerger armors for example. Currently only soldier is avaible. No ascended gear will be avaible through wvw. So you are just wrong.:)

(fixing culling)That alone makes this a huge addition to WvW.

Addition? Are you delusional? Culling was a game-breaking bug that should have been fixed during the betas or immeditately after the release. Fixing it was mandatory and does not count as addition.
