Hi all,
This is a great thread. It’s constructive. We’re all reading it and referring to it in team discussions.
As we said in the AMA, our top internal priorities have been population balance and rewards. From this thread, your top five priorities are, in order:
1. Stability & skill balance
2. Fix or revert DBL
3. Rewards
4. Population balance
5. Scoring
Yes, we will take the feedback and make stability, general skill balance, and fixing/reverting DBL our top priorities. We’re not currently working on scoring and that has to be a longer-term project.
Karl is working specifically on WvW-focused skill balance. He’s looking for the wins for WvW that don’t screw the rest of the game.
We’re investigating whether to fix or revert DBL. They’re both a lot of work. These next couple days will be your last chance to give feedback before we make a decision, so speak now or forever hold your peace.
I want to reiterate that everything we work on either ships in April or starts beta-testing on Live servers in April. We’re locking down dev work for the April release soon — next up is localization, QA, integration and regression testing — but we’ll extend the deadline for WvW skill balance.
There is one thing that doesn’t need to get wrapped up into the April release: Friday night resets. That doesn’t require a Live build. We’ll do it.

Thank you for taking the time to address our concerns, though, I think that list is mistaken. " fix DBLs" is not in the top 5 , Removing them along with removing HoT content is. It is important that those two things are distinctly separated. You can’t piggy back “fix DBL” or “add HoT” content to Alpine in there as that would be the opposite of what players are asking for and is being lumped together as being the same thing. Many did not specify in a short list, but have in other posts in this forum that they want Alpine back pre HoT, and that is not being clarified at all with this list, as anything short of that and they will not come back to play. " Fixing the map" may not be what you think it is.

In addition, wanting " Population balance" issues resolved does not necessarily mean “forced Merger” as well, as many would much rather have dynamic map rather than a forced merger. Player choice is paramount in what servers they play for/with. I would like population balance as well, but do not want what I have seen suggested by Anet as a solution. Instead, I would rather have the maps that are made available in match solve the issue. Like this ( my post with the bulletpoints, not the NPC idea, thatw as dreadful):

The problem with a short list like this is it is not defining the specifics. You may think you " are making players happy" by doing what you perceive is on this list, but instead may very well do the opposite due to mushing together opposing ideas as being the same thing and possibly implementing things that could make players leave instead (such as forced EoTM Merging type alliance systems and Hot Participation rewards, for example) When a player asks for population balance and rewards, chances are they are NOT thinking of that, but instead would like more actual rare loot drops from PKing and PvP reward tracks along with a reduction in the number of servers and more maps available to handle the queues.

Adding WvW servers in addition to PvE servers, ALSO allows an opportunity to add voice com and non voice com servers to solve the long age old problem of the different players on the servers not communicating the same way, as they are not even playing the same game like that and would improve game play for both types of players.

I just hope they do not get tunnel vision on only one way to solve the problems so that players wind up unhappy again in the end. What players usually mean by " fixing a map" is design a map from the ground up to keep players engaged in nonstop challenging, strategic, fun PvP action the entire time they are on a map, not separating them and making them run all over the place to get back on target. Direct routes, accessible terrains, and most important add NOTHING to WvW that is not player driven and easily countered. ( Glares at those banners, Airships , Fog, ect..)
This is Large scale battlefield PvP, it needs to play like it.

I just hope they actually are on the same page this time, as ones ideas of " rewards" and others are not always the same thing. It could be turned into a EoTM Ktrain gold farm or be made into an awesome large scale PvP Battlefield where players actually enjoy playing again and have something to fight for.

We don’t want it bearable though, we want a map designed for nonstop challenging, strategic, fun pvp action the entire time you are on it. " Bearable" is not something that draws players to the game. ANY map added to the game mode should be designed from the ground up that way, not just made " bearable". It needs to be a great map. “Settling for” does not bring back players who left for other games, it has to be " Better than" you receive elsewhere to do so.

I have to say the post from Mike worries me even though I appreciate the communication. It makes me wonder what they’ve been doing for the last 18 months, of course a large part of that was the DBL, but what about since HOT? It worries me that they may rush the developments that they consider player priorities from that thread. And what about the player priorities from John Corpening’s communications and discussions and even the CDis going back further.

If they wanted further feedback why not gather it before, maybe once HOT was received so poorly. It seems very late now to be possibly changing course.

i have nothing but love and respect for him posting, he knows how many feel about it, they are letting us talk, and he’s responding back – our audience can be pretty mean and as the president of the company, he doesn’t have to post here …but he did. That’s kind of cool, and imo merits at least a benefit of the doubt and support.

this doesn’t mean i’m going to be a white knight either, if I think something is wrong…i will say it.

Contrary to narcissistic opinions, not everyone hates these bl nor wants them removed. If they don’t delete them it means they did listen. If they do, it also means they did listen. Forums are mostly used by disgruntled playerbase, the people who do like the bl likely won’t be taking to the forums…that is why it seems skewed towards people hating them and anet just not listening. There’s enough people who like them that it isn’t so one-sided as to just automatically plan to switch back.

We don’t know that. Anet could ask us, each of us, in-game vote or email or other tools, if they wanted to. Until then there is the feedback on this forum, on reddit, all over the internet.

Disgruntled? How you dare to categorize your fellow players? There are those satisfied and happy, playing the game and those discontent posting on forums? That’s your vision?! Where is the huge WvW community I used to be part of? Because they are clearly not in game. If they are happy, they are in other games. Those still happy are too few… that’s the number problem, and WvW cannot be with a few. So respect the disgruntled, try to understand their pain and maybe help them if possible.

The day is close when all of us will just “don’t care anymore”. The few “disgruntled” that still left. United, trying to understand each other – or divided and calling names, which way leads forward?

I had to actually go to the thread, put my face up to the monitor and confirm that he did actually write this in the thread and that it wasnt just the OP. The President of Anet. Mike Obrien. Says that we only got a few days to respond to an issue that’s been destroying the community since HoT and been a very toxic topic of discussion… or forever hold our peace.

I so wish they would email all past and present WvW players to take part in surveys to determine the direction they take. ( Actual WvW players not just people doing dailies or guild missions in WvW because they do not care about the game mode, WvW is just another rock to mine as far as they are concerned.) One thing I always liked about GW surveys was the ability to write in your answers, and the fact they used these surveys to create the game. They need to go back to their roots and get back to surveying the players.

Instead of saying things like " rewards" for questions though, they should be more specific such as “PK Loot” " participation rewards" “Rewards tracks based on player xp earned in WvW” ect.. so they get it right every time instead of taking the chance that it could be very very wrong.

I’m all for fixing the BL’s… not removing them. I like the desert bl overall, yes it needs some work, but people complaining because after nearly year they can’t navigate a map that’s essentially the same layout as the old one is kinda sad.

My point is if they do not go back to a slightly less terrible map immediately WHILE they fix the maps and other issues, Most everyone I know is uninstalling the game and is done with them because they were ignored for years prior to this.. this was just the straw that broke the backs of players who have been here since Gw1. They are giving them no more chances after this. It is the final effort to get them to listen after years of their pleas falling on deaf ears. Yes, stability being fixed is important, however, that will not bring back those leaving for good, and yes the Alpine thing has to happen immediately, they are done waiting is the issue. I am just trying to bring back the players mass exiting the game currently to save the guilds as they are about to crash hard if this isn’t on the list for April. I can only get people to agree to " see what happens in April" at this point. If it isn’t there, they are not waiting any longer. This is an act of good faith that they are finally listening.

I am not aware of anyone that wants to keep alpine forever, they just want it back while they solve the problems. They consider DBL and HoT unplayable all together.

Just give us the choice….. DBL with all the HoT stuff, or Alpine map without any HoT stuff…
Players will choose ingame.
I didn’t play GW2 for long month now, I’m just here because I hope they will fix wvw. But bring back the old map and add all the HoT stuff and for sure I will not play again.
HoT have killed WvW in many ways, not only the map. Guild stuff, map, skill balance, too much cc, pirate ship everywhere, ugly really ugly keep… Who will build a keep underground seriously ? Or in middle of a canyon with big mountain all around.. This is just stupid, so far away from what a keep should look.

I like the DBL. There is nothing wrong with it, once you understand the map. It is more complex than the Alpine BL, which, was designed like a ‘Risk’ map one dimensional.

Just because they won’t delete the DBL, doesn’t mean that at all. Reversion of the ‘Stability Nerf’ would be a step in the right direction. The lack there of, would mean that it is just talk.

there’s A LOT wrong with it.

1. Auto-upgrades – i say scrap this idea, back to basics, have someone trigger the upgrade to actually happen, just remove the gold cost.

2. Towers serve no real purpose – sure they block you and have you take the longer path to wherever you wanna go, but getting towers wont let you treb garri, or bay. they are now just simply aesthetics.

3. relative to point 3 – the map is too big. i know, a lot of people are saying “its the same” …really? then how come northern towers cannot treb middle/garri keep?
same goes for sw tower to bay/fire keep? you cant even hit a friggin camp from a tower. now tell me if its not too big, and if it’s the same size.

4. WayPoints being permanently contested in both air/fire keeps in home BLs …this is simply just a nightmare.

5. Gathering nodes. Nuff said.

6. Too horizontal. Clearly this map has been made with gliders in mind, but because of the possible glitch/glide abuse, it is not implemented.

7. Oasis Event – thankfully they disabled this. As this event just gives the more populated server an advantage over the few defenders…

8. Particle heavy. again, too much aesthetics.

These are the things that i can think of, but im sure people have more in mind.

Oasis was pulled out – non-starter.

The map is not too horizontal (they are the same size – they are vertical more) – there is no way they would allow Gliders in any WvW map. From the 3rd floor of EBG, you could get into any inner keep easily. Non starter argument.

As far a WP contested – that is something that removing much of the PvE from the map would fix (anytime a foe takes one of your shrines – it contests the keep).

It doesn’t lag my PC much and mine is 4 yrs old.

If you look at the map and overlay them they are the same size but more VERITCAL NOT HORIZONTAL.

So basically – what you want is the PvE out of WvW – that we agree with.

Because I did. And DBL is clearly larger horizontally.

Not that much and your point it about is? More people can be on those BL maps. I really disliked the old maps because of how long it took to get around (the ABL’s) I can get around faster on the DBL’s because I know where I am going – they just need to trim the PvE off (the Wyverns and Skritt and all that I mentioned in my previous post).

They take more of a tactical mind to play than just blob and ram gates with head. That is why I like them. I dislike them for the reason I stated, changes that were made to put more PvE into the maps (more like EotM – barracades, buffed lords, harder gates and walls, etc). Take those out and the maps would be fun to play. Along with reverting the Stabo changes.

2. Towers serve no real purpose – sure they block you and have you take the longer path to wherever you wanna go, but getting towers wont let you treb garri, or bay. they are now just simply aesthetics.

3. relative to point 3 – the map is too big. i know, a lot of people are saying “its the same” …really? then how come northern towers cannot treb middle/garri keep?
same goes for sw tower to bay/fire keep? you cant even hit a friggin camp from a tower. now tell me if its not too big, and if it’s the same size.

4. WayPoints being permanently contested in both air/fire keeps in home BLs …this is simply just a nightmare.

5. Gathering nodes. Nuff said.

6. Too horizontal. Clearly this map has been made with gliders in mind, but because of the possible glitch/glide abuse, it is not implemented.

7. Oasis Event – thankfully they disabled this. As this event just gives the more populated server an advantage over the few defenders…

8. Particle heavy. again, too much aesthetics.

These are the things that i can think of, but im sure people have more in mind.

LOL – those are separate from the MAP design. The auto upgrades are also on EBG – so that argument doesn’t hold water. Same with gathering nodes.

Oasis was pulled out – non-starter.

The map is not too horizontal (they are the same size – they are vertical more) – there is no way they would allow Gliders in any WvW map. From the 3rd floor of EBG, you could get into any inner keep easily. Non starter argument.

As far a WP contested – that is something that removing much of the PvE from the map would fix (anytime a foe takes one of your shrines – it contests the keep).

It doesn’t lag my PC much and mine is 4 yrs old.

If you look at the map and overlay them they are the same size but more VERITCAL NOT HORIZONTAL.

So basically – what you want is the PvE out of WvW – that we agree with.

Because I did. And DBL is clearly larger horizontally.

Not that much and your point is about it? More people can be on the BL maps.

They take more of a tactical mind to play than just blob and ram gates with head. That is why I like them. I dislike them for the reason I stated, changes that were made to put more PvE into the maps (more like EotM – barracades, buffed lords, harder gates and walls, etc). Take those out and the maps would be fun to play. Along with reverting the Stabo changes.

It is a big difference. The area of the map is a lot bigger, the distance between towers, camps and keeps have increased as well. It just increases the time needed to arrive to the objective. A lot more running, a lot less fighting.

Do you play WvW? Your idea of strategy is entirely fantastical. There is no general who commands what point to take and when. The most organization you see is a server council asking guilds to be in a certain borderlands at a certain time.

I started off hating the desert BL but now i’m getting used to it its not that bad. Rotating with alpine is the middle ground here. The stability change is the most necessary thing.

Responding to the comment of gliding from EBG third floor into any keep… i think not. You maybe can reach inner of green keep with infinite gliding mastery but the other keeps are too high up altitude wise to do it. You could glide into durios, Anz, Wildcreek, klovan, QL, and maybe Ogrewatch. Klovan and QL especially if you can land on that mountain wall between Stonemist and the hylek base.

giving the winner of a weekly matchup the option of choosing which border for next matchup could be an interesting twist too. first guild to claim the server keep gets to choose.

and if that’s too complicated, then just the first guild to claim keep in any server sets it.

So I’m not trying to white knight with this post but I was reading this thread and I just was blown away with the responses.

People complaining with the fact that WvW is actually getting attention. complaining that in a few days they are making a decision but you been complaining for years blah blah blah.

I really hope that people stop complaining about them doing work on WvW. It is a 0% chance everyone will like any change, it is virtually impossible. Lets just be glad that they are listening to what the gamers are believing are the issues.

As for the DBL complaining tons tons tons of people were complaining about the alpine before expansion. Don’t try to sugar coat it like it was the best map ever made. The DBL might not be good by any standards but there was a lot to be desired with the Alpine.

I had to actually go to the thread, put my face up to the monitor and confirm that he did actually write this in the thread and that it wasnt just the OP. The President of Anet. Mike Obrien. My personal reaction was more colourful but in essence that is exactly how I feel about it. Karl’s previous balance efforts have left a permanent … uh … impression.
