WvW complete reset
The population cap on the servers includes players who don’t play PvE. That section of players will most likely just reselect the current servers they are on, thus filling up the population caps and locking out WvW players.

The only way a reset would work is if they say had a meteorite hit all the servers, made fewer new ones and made everyone choose from those forcing everyone into more populated servers. However, if people could not get their entire guilds on servers, they would be rightfully infuriated.
WvW / PVP ONLY
Force people off their servers? I know there are WvW focused servers just as there are RP servers. I think it’s pretty obvious what server populations are what.
Why not have NA face off against EU servers. NA T1 vs EU T1, etc.?
Why not have NA face off against EU servers. NA T1 vs EU T1, etc.?
Because that would force one set, or the other, to deal with a great deal more lag then the other, due to the servers needing to be located on one side of the world or another.

Weird, since I’ve played with and against several guilds that enjoy playing on NA servers, and are at tiers 4-8. And I am playing in a guild currently playing in T7 that enjoys it a whole lot! (And certainly under no circumstances would we want to move to T1-3)

I think a good idea would be that when the expansion hits to reset the glicko rating, this would mean that new players coming into the game or misinformed pugs looking to stack on the ‘best’ server wouldn’t know which to choose and hopefully all servers would benefit from the influx of new population.
Sure it would mean a few initial bad matchups until the tiers reform but I think it would be worth it in the long run.

What exactly is stopping anyone from choosing whatever server they want to play on now? And if there is a reset what point is there in choosing a new server, how will anyone know where to go if there is no ranking, rating, tiers established, like it or not this is used by many to guide their decision when choosing a new server. Also a full reset completely invalidates all the time, effort, and hard work so many players put into their servers to rise in ranks and strengthen their community’s wvw experience, it would be like spitting in their face and send the message, that none of them or what they do matters.

I must agree with X T D, resetting the Glicko would just:
* Horrible match-ups until it stabilized back again
* Not really change the outcome
* Lots of angry because their hard work is gone for months
* Probably drive lots of people away from WvW for a while (and into PvE or out)

Resetting glicko would result in matchups similar to the AA vs TA vs 3rd wheel type matchups we had at the start of the game. It took so long to stabilise and I’m sure no one wants those matchups ever again.

Because I’m trying to bet on a huge influx of players due to the expansion as a reason for putting up with bad matchups for a while as a trade off but fair if the influx isn’t as large as I hope it won’t be worth it. (In attempt to replenish all servers population).
Also about players not knowing which server to go that’s the point of my suggestion, I’m trying to avoid all the new players simply picking the number one server because they think it’s the best.
As for hard work getting glicko, I know ppt players will take offense to this but we all know by now glicko is nothing more than a representation of raw population and coverage.

I think another option would be to allow Glicko to change things faster, so that servers doesn’t get stuck in Glicko-locks for weeks or months. So servers like DR, BP etc that have been plummeting through the ranks the last months would fall quicker to the ranks where they can have more fair matches. And other way around as well.

This is also why the lower ranked servers don’t want to be merged (and thus destroyed) together.

Let’s be realistic, if major changes aren’t made to the mode then a good chunk of the new blood is going to be soon turned off and we’ll be back at square one in no time. I believe this is reason why we get “Tounaments” shoved at us, WvWvW’s design flaws makes that insufferable hype train a necessary evil.

Indeed, I never understand this server merge nonsense. Its bad enough what megaservers did to communities and server identities. Many people enjoy wvw in lower pop tiers thats why they stay there, hard as it may be for some in t1/2 to believe, not everyone wants to run around in a blob and fight another blob or steamroll some helpless guy and laugh about it. Many prefer running and fighting with groups of 5-15. Smaller pop wvw servers also tend to be very tight knit as many people are used to seeing the same players every day so a pretty strong bond can naturally develop and this makes it easier to get to know a smaller group then a giant one.

That was sort of what I meant for the op. Don’t make blanket statement most guilds are dedicated to their server. I have seen plenty of guild movement – that is how servers rise and fall…. I can see how you read what you did into my response though….

While I agree with the idea of smaller servers… It really isn’t healthy to have “empty” servers either.
When one of my friends first joined the game he impatiently picked his first server, which at the time happened to be (and I still refer to them affectionately as) the bottom of the barrel ET. He hated WvW because he could go hours without seeing another player and it wasn’t until after he transferred servers that he found out what WvW really was about (btw, not to a T1 server at the time either. I think we were like T4-5). It’s a really scary thought to think of how many other WvW’ers have been scared off by a simple lack of people on those “Bottom” tiers. {Especially because if they don’t know how the megaserver works it looks like WvW is just a ghost town compared to the rest of the game, even on larger servers}

Thats really a different issue, I remember there was a thread regarding it. There is really little for a new player to go by when choosing a server if they dont read any gw2 related news on websites or have friends already in game. I remember when I first started I didnt know anything about servers so I just chose a random one like many others. It doesnt help that anet changed the population standard and now every NA server classifies as very high, aside from the full ones. When I started over 2 years ago some were medium, high pop etc.

WvW needs to abandon the idea of “servers” and allow players and guilds to join the action in a flexible way that prevents barren maps (as megaserver now prevents in PvE, to great success), and allows guilds/friends to play with each other.
How about some multi-hour “events” with good rewards, with a lot more than 3-tiers of rewards. Like whichever side contributes the most to some ‘project’ by the end of four hours gets awarded by the tribe they are helping; you participate lots of ways, like hindering your opponent, scavenger hunt collections around the map, control supply line for building materials, kill your opponent’s workers, etc. By contributing to more events, and more time, you earn high levels of rewards when the big event is over.
I should be able to pop into WvW at any time, no matter my schedule or where I live, and find an active map, get rewarded for my time and effort, and have choices about how to participate, and easily be able to see the big picture.
Imagine this: I log in to GW2 and open my WvW panel. It shows me that my currently active guild is helping build a pyramid on one border, and another guild is trying to flip a keep by a certain time for a bonus reward. But, I decide to do join some friends roaming on another map entirely though, and pop into a new HoT border. I change tabs in my WvW panel and get an overview of the main action on the map, lots of events pop up, including, Red secured friendship with a tribe, and now is trying to escort the tribe’s trade convoy to it’s keep for a big haul of supplies. I decide to join Green and help snipe a few yaks. I’m warned once I join green on this map, I cannot join red or blue here until at least a four hour cooling off period. Yak sniping is going slow, they have good defense, so i change tactics and go to cap a watch tower further along the convoy path. I’ll need help, so I right click the tower on the map and open a call for assistance. Pretty quickly some other people join, and when we get within 10,000 unit of each other we can see each other on the map, making ad hoc coordination a lot easier. We cap the tower and use it’s telescoped rifle to snipe yaks. Etc..
I believe this is reason why we get “Tounaments” shoved at us, WvWvW’s design flaws makes that insufferable hype train a necessary evil.
Are you saying the WvW tourneys are just a way to get us off their backs about new WvW fixes and content?!
I dont know what’s worse, that anet did this or that so many people fell for it over and over and over again! What’s that WvW S4 coming soon?
Also a full reset completely invalidates all the time, effort, and hard work so many players put into their servers to rise in ranks and strengthen their community’s wvw experience, it would be like spitting in their face and send the message, that none of them or what they do matters.
That won’t stop them. When they announced resets of fractal ranks, there was HUGE outrage in the dungeon community. They did it anyway (for fractal leaderboards that never ended up being implemented LOL).
Why should they do that?
The players who want to stay on their current server would be annoyed because:
- months of hard work for nothing
- match-ups against servers way above or below their current tier
→ no fun since you either farm other players/have empty maps or get farmed - your server might be full before you join
→ you can’t play with your guild/friends anymore
Players who want to change their server:
- Free server transfer instead of paying with gems
→ no money for Anet (→ less content for everyone)
The “fresh restart” is a bad idea imo.
That would ruin a lot of the communities already established in the past 2-3 years.
Guilds may not be able to get everyone together ( some have irl afk people who would come back to what the heck is going on ), guilds who play together in WvW would have to choose to play together still or go separate and many will be split from other guilds they play with, and a lot more problems within communities today.
We know Anet is doing something to help WvW, let that come first…they may have a way to help balance that we just don’t know about, but asking them to remove everyone off their server, you’re asking them to remove EVERYONE in the entire game, not just WvWers. It’s unneeded in so many ways.
Yes, I think a way to rebalance is needed, but there’s a reason there are tiers. Do recruitment for your server if you want more. It’s hard yes, but it’s doable; I helped with TC’s and now we’re in T1 from various situations, but we still had to reach out to people to come here.
When Anet made lesser populated tiers less gems or free transfer they got a few guilds to move that way (who moved right back after their adventure was over). I don’t believe that’s the answer either; that’s raising X servers above Y servers and unfair to the Y servers who may just be trying to get their friends in to play with unrelated to WvW.

Every time some one claims megaserver is better I’ll say to some it wasn’t and many have left because of megaserver.. Megaserver is pretty much blob world bosses and new content until you get put on a bad map and have to get taxi’ed to a better map. Some maps still are quite empty and also guilds get split a lot and have to taxi in other guild members. Sounds like its so much better now, half my guild on a different map then me.. You no longer hear servers claiming first kills on so and so content now but you here “map ip 156, first to kill so and so”.. LA used to be the spot to call for help in wvw when it was needed.. That is pretty much gone now with megaserver.
So megaserver was not great success. WvW turns into megaserver will be the end of this mode for many. Megaserver in WvW is pretty much EoTM right now.. You want all four maps to be like EoTM? please no
