WvW composition
That seems pretty asinine, most guilds will run anything but ranger. Hardcore guilds are pretty strict usually on builds and class makeup though, I assume he had prior notice.
That said, his classes were fine. Necro for aoe and boonstrip, ele’s for fields.
i figured as much, i mean i don’t know anything outside of what he said… so i don’t know if he joined super hardcore guild #2348237. I usually bounce ideas off him since i figured he pretty much lives in WvW he knows a bit compared to me.
I am now looking into making an alt now that i have my mesmer up and running half/decent. I thought about making an ele but that just knocked that idea out for me. -I am kind of stuck between necro/ele/engi.. but after this convo with him i guess i should open up the possibility of guardian.
Apparently what i got from asking him is that his guild is now using engi’s for water fields? o.0? i found that a bit odd but i guess it can work? I don’t know if i would replace an ele since my experiences with them have been great and they do make amazing supports.
Generally guilds have a certain play-style for which they need their members to run classes / builds. It can happen that to fit a play-style, they will require a certain number of a specific class.
A simple example is if you take the Necro aoe boonstrip Typhus mentionned, to strip 15 players of boons it would take you 3 necros (assuming wells dont tick or change targets after tick, I dont play a necro) because of the aoe limit.
Play whatever class you want and find a guild of people who don’t take this game that seriously and just want to hang out and have fun. That seriously sounds like a kitteny guild. And seriously, who doesn’t want Necro condi/boon corruption and Ele CCs and fields?
i don’t know thats what blew my mind when he said that…
the times i have been in WvW and run with a few ele’s you can really see the good ones turning the tide of the battle little by little…
It feels like every class does have its place i just don’t see why X class would be blacklisted so harshly
Either the guild he was in is completely nuts, or there’s more to the story than “they kicked me because I wouldn’t use guardian”. Unless you know other people in the guild you’re probably never going to get the other half of the story though.
Either way, like other people have already said, make whatever you want to play (preferably not ranger or thief if you’re planning on running with a group of more than 5-10, since both have basically squat to offer in terms of large scale combat), find a group of people who aren’t complete tools, and you should be good to go.
It is probably due to horribly broken meta of hardcore side WvW these days, most of the really hardcore guilds run heavy frontline only (an example: a guild group of 25 runs 20 frontline, a mesmer for veil, one or two eles for some CC and water fields, and a few necros for boonstrip/blinds)… Probably the backline places were already taken and he got kicked for not willing to swap classes..
most of the strong guilds i’ve faced run mainly warriors and guardians, then 3-5 eles, around 3 necros, 1-2 mesmers for veil and tw and 0 rangers. engi and thieves can be very helpful, but are not really as important. if mesmers had no veil the would be right down there with the rangers.
so wvw basically only needs 4 classes(warrior, guardian, ele, necro). the other ones have 1 or 2 useful utilities, but are not really needed.
the problem is class balance in wvw as the classes that are good in 1v1 like rangers, thieves and mesmers are lacking aoe. as a mesmer i feel annoyed with the stupid role of utilitybot.

Also it could have been his build.
If he was running dagger/dagger ele hes about as useful for the melee train as a thief
If he is running minion necro, again these are more of a hinderence to the melee train then anything else.
basicly he might have been causing enemies to rally and not willing to change to his guardian.
Of all the hardcore guilds I have seen in WVW those are the only reasons I can see kicking someone who mains those two classes. It could be exactly as he says, if so thats a kittened guild and he will be better somewhere else.
but I bet he just wasnt willing to create a build for the classes he wanted to play and thats why.
Stat increase = gear grind.
Gear grind = no money from me ever again.
Most guilds don’t really have much use for medium armor classes. They might splash some in but that is generally speaking all they allow. Light armor classes are welcome often with very specific builds and roles. Pretty much all guilds with open enrollment welcome guardians and warriors. Some might have a list of builds to chose from and have a skill requirement (as in you can hold your own on fight night) but many will be willing to train anyone that will run a heavy armor class character.
