I have 2 levels 80s.. one is a guard, the other a ranger.. Both seem to get hit like little girls in WvW.. Their gear isn’t horrible per say.. The 80’s have older ear from like a year ago I guess is the last time I played.. Still, I can’t really compete at all in wvw.. I might as well be running around dressed up in papermache. The combat log shows me taking 2k 3k 5k 9k hits..? Im dishing out a measly 800dmg on my 80s, ranger with the odd 1200 dmg spike…. So I thought my classes were perhaps kitten and just tried a low level thief… Wow kitten d.. I think my highest hit was around 180dmg lol…

I thought this game wasn’t all about gear? Now its all about gear? Whats the deal?

I don’t think gear is doing that…have you checked your traits? Since you last played a year ago there have been changes to both the trait system and trait balance itself; in situations where it changes your build (such as a Master trait you were using moving to Adept) the game would refund your trait points automatically. It may be that your characters are dying because they have nothing invested in traits.

I set the traits up.. I should mention, Every single one on one, I died in about 3 seconds to these massive damage spikes.. It didn’t matter which class I was using.. The guard did last a bit longer, I just don’t understand how they are putting out so much dmg compared to me.. I understand I am probably dieing to people with 1k + ranks and stuff and most likely fully decked out in the best of the best gear.. But tbh, at this point it is not even enjoyable.. I was zerging for hours the other night.. I got like 6 badges.. How am I supposed to afford any kind of new gear ( if that is the issue) at that rate? Someone tells me to just zerg and tag people.. So I do and don’t seem to be making any head way. I must be missing something..

And the odd time I am in a 1vs1.. It is just a joke.. I can hear the guy lol on the other end of the screen I litterally drop faster than a level 1 npc in a quest area lol..

Traits are probably part of it, but gear certainly has something to do with it too, especially if youre in rare gear. Ascended armor/weapons/trinkets, pricey runes/sigils, food buffs, and guard buffs from wvw ranks all make a difference. If you see someone with both guard buffs and +100 power/70 ferocity food, you can bet its someone that outgears too.

Spvp is the game mode that isnt about gear. If you dont mind the only match type being conquest then you can try that instead.

It probably isn’t gear, but if you are really worried, spend a day Ktraining EOTM and you will have full ascended armor.

IT’s hard to say what was going on without both seeing what you had/have on and what the other person was wearing. I know I was quietly told to ignore the zerker meta and go defensive if I planned on not being in the middle of a zerg but more “roaming/scouting”.

Also, odd you said your ranger was the one with the big damage spikes. I’m sure you’ve got something going wrong there. Everyone knows rangers are crap

Not unplayable by any means but you need to adapt to where the game is at now.

Basically high toughness and condition removal are mandatory for most classes.

What sort of gear do you have? Is it zerker? If you don’t know what that is then go to the wiki and read up on the different armor types.

Basically for wvw you want soldiers, dire, knights, rabid, or any of the other height toughness sets.

The meta game changes after all that time. Builds have changed. Food has changed. And yes, gear has also trained.

If I hadn’t boxed for a year and I got in the ring, I’d get slaughtered because I haven’t boxed for a year. It takes a lot of time to get your eye back in and get used to things.

But in an MMO it’s good to know what’s changed about each profession and what other people are doing.

Take a look for roaming builds if you’re into roaming and see where you’re falling short.

It’s hard to say, without really knowing what he was up against. I will say there are a couple WvW WXP bonuses which are worth knowing about. The stacking bonuses for “Applied Fortitude” I think it is.

Thanks. Going there made all the difference in the world as far as attaining badges went. My damage seemed a lot better too but we were only fighting npcs about 90% of the time.

I got my first ascended ring last night, the rest of the gear was cheap exotics from the broker.. Ill have a better look around the guard forum as I think the ranger might be a bit too weak no matter I do.. So Ill concentrate on him for now.. Thanks for letting me know about that zone I had no idea because way back when, everyone just ran eternal battlegrounds so that is what I was doing lol…

How will he have full ascended armor? From gold earned? I highly doubt he would get enough.

It’s ignorant to say that gear doesn’t matter. Fully Ascended, you are looking at better stats over someone in Exotics. You definitely notice a difference when going from Rare to Exotic, and again from Exotic to Ascended. It’s a much larger difference from Rare to Exotics granted, but there’s still a difference for the next tier.

But sure, you should be able to survive well enough in a set of Exotic armor. This may come down to your selected weapons, utility skills and traits. E.g., you should probably just whip out the Staff for the most part if you run with a group. That secures you tons of tagging within your opponents and gives you some good defensive skills. Soldier armor is still a good choice for a Guardian. And although traits have changed, you can get away with the good old standards in most cases. Guardians has been very stable in the game, rarely nerfed, but neither buffed too much.

Keep your Protection up, use your Aegis, don’t run into a opposing raid if you don’t got Stability (for that matter, you don’t have to go straight through them anyways, swerve around them if you feel squishy), take advantage of your heals, don’t stand in fields, clear your (and as a bonus, allies) debuffs. Eat your consumables. Don’t be afraid of taking Wall of Reflection, it’s still effective at killing off players in the other team at choke points. And.. spam Staff auto-attack.

Guardians tend to hit like a wet noodle regardless. It’s not about the gear tier but your gear type is still important for the stats, as well as the extra boost from runes.

The gear hasn’t changed.

Gear didn’t really change so much, there is riny difference between exotic and ascended. The main reason why you get his so hard is probably the actual stats from gear and traits you chose. Look up decent zerg buillds.

Well i don’t know what people are on about, but gear matters and so does the stats on them. If you go to wvw in berzerker gear and being a bit rusty since you been gone a while, you will most probably be dead very fast. Or if you pick gear with vitality/toughness/healingpower you wont really put out any damage to kill the person hitting you.

So for us to help you it is easier if we know what kind of stats you are using on your gear, what are the runes, the sigils and the food? And also what kind of gear? Do you have exotics or lower? And well class and traits is also very important.

Knowing this and it will be easier to point you in some direction.

Hoelbrak, Strength, Melandru, Pack, Exuberance are the other most common I see.

@ OP , i run with my guardian with the old divinity runes and i am the last man standing again ….

skills and skill rotation usage , dodges and traits is the key to survive

Was wondering this myself, I have an absolute ton of Karma but merchants looking for globs of green stuff or something or other. Few ascendant bits and they’re certainly better than what I had. However also I think I was just being rusty, being a roaming thief any mistake usually get’s you killed. Did receive a tasty 9k Eviscerate recently highlighting the need to dodge at the right moment.

Gua is one or the best of the wvw proffs. Ranger will be a good (i hope they will) a good roaming prof

I personally returned after 6 months and I’m still hitting people 12k with maul when fully buffed.

Well the player came back after long time of not playing. He say he dies as soon as he gets close to one player and he cant even give us clear info because he don’t remember. He defiantly is RUSTY so he is not really suiting for the person who goes in to wvw with zerker gear, and especially not as guardian/meatshield.

Point is, get survival gear p/v/t gear, and then when your on top of your class again and relearned what you missed during this long time then start make the changes, by then you should also have karma and gold enough for it.

i just came back from a year break.

i still get killed as fast now as i did then. meh *shrug*

The game isn’t very gearcentric. It’s not free, but you can buy an exotic soldier’s set for not even a week of farming on the TP and be good for life in WvW. How little work do you really want to put in?

Please tell me this is an exaggeration. There’s no possible way the game or the community could get this stupid this fast. If so, why do I gotta buy 300 silk scraps everytime I wanna craft my own bolts of damask (and then repeat that 5 times for every piece)

You can not buy ascended gear, you craft if and it is accountbound. There are also boxes dropping with ascended gear and weapons, but during the 2 years i played, it dropped 3 of them and two was gear i could not use and are still in my bank.

There is also drops inside of Fractals, but that is about it. So check your info before you start rant like that

I’m sure a lot of eles, necros, guards and warriors would say otherwise.

As for something to help in this it’s really good to see what you can potentially do, http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/ is really good, often up to date and as far as I know, widely used. For general stuff? Well, as basics I would aim for 3000 armor, 2000 power and some 20000 health, depending on class of course. That will actually get you quite far. Then for the fine tuning if you go for condition about 1000-1500 is often enough, same goes for healing power if you try to go for support but that’s tricky since you need to actually know what to do and just pumping healing power is not enough. Critical damage and chance % is like the more you have the better.

But you cannot have them all and you can focus for 3-4 different stats, play some more and you get the idea. The rest comes to skills and traits as to what you play. I can go for quite stupid builds at times just to see if they have any chance of working in any situation. But I often keep those basics in mind as to not going too squishy and just end up on the floor feet up. Condition/physical spike damage is atm hitting quite highly so ultimately it comes to how you move. Don’t go alone unless you are confident enough to handle 1vs2 situations.

Exotic gear as weapons/armor goes is quite fine, ascended trinkets have a great difference compared to exotics though, but even with exotic trinkets you can survive. And you can get them with some effort, fractals is a good place for rings, as for random drops if your personal level is above 10 or to buy them from the golem there. Accessories are cheapest to buy from guild commendation merchants, and if you don’t like/want/care fractals, buy amulets and rings from WvW laurel vendor. Cheaper there. For your basic exotic full gear… I’d dare to lie that the cost would be about 20-25 gold if you bought all from BLT. Or you can drop the price heavily with dungeon tokens, getting fully geared for soldiers is easiest by doing Ascalon Catacombs full run every day, 1350 for full armor and about 300 per weapon. 180 tokens per day so it takes a while but you also get gold from it so it’s the poor mans solution.

Too much wall of text and confusing inforation in this thread. It’s rather simple:

If you have full exotics + Ascended Accessories you should do fine in WvW.

If you already have that, take a closer look at:
- your rune selection
- your sigil selection
-your traits

As a general rule of thumb when new to WvW: start with higher thoughness and as you learn how to position yourself and survive, move slowly towards more power/crit gear until you find a balance that’s confortable.

Also VERY important, since it impacts your performance a lot:

- use +contidion damage gear in roaming/smallscale
- user power/crit in raid/zerg

Please post your complete build, including all traits, skills used, all gear with your runeset and sigils. I recommend http://en.gw2skills.net/ as above, its an excellent tool.

Once you have posted your build please describe specific instances of this happening, does it happen most often when you roam and get jumped by a thief ? does it happen when you are doing mid or large group combat ?

Also describe some of your combat playstyle in details so people here can help you out with tactics etc.

Without your build though and knowledge which precise situations are affecting you to highest degree and most often any advice posted here is just pure general talk and speculation so if you want some decent advice then post it.

Also, better yet, instead of asking here ask on your servers voice comms, people there will help you a lot, really.

Meta has changed with the nerfing of power builds and the rise of condi-bunker builds.

Your choices are to generate alpha strike builds designed to unload a ton of damage quickly, go condi-bunker or go support bunker. Unfortunately you have two level 80s that are not very flexible in terms of options.

At the time I posted this I had 2 pieces of zerker draconic of the flame gear and 2 pieces of knights draconic of the flame gear with a magi armageddon and solidier armageddon piece. single runes that added +25 to vitality. using an exotic 2 hand sword.
I was 6/61/0/0

I’ve since changed over to
0/1/6/6/1 using a sceptre/torch and stuff that adds burning duration or dmg.
I sometimes put a sceptre/shield on just to experiment..

Even before I switched stuff around, with the same build and gear I went into eotm, and noticed I wasn’t taking near as much damage from pvp. Maybe cause most people were leveling and not really 80 yet idk?

I’m now running a mix of soldier armageddon and magi armageddon gear with the same sceptre/torch /shield weapons..
also 2 fangs of tequatl.
also druids circle and lunarias circle ascended rings.
settlers amulet.
and a charred back warmer.. not sure where to get a better cloak..

I know the gear is a mixed bag but I was severely broke in game with like 20 silver to my name.. Which I why I wanted to pvp a bit to get some gear.. But that hasn’t really happened .. I’ve not had much luck getting anything useable..

First, you are returning, and need practice, on top of having mixmaxed gear and not optimised at all, so you’ll need to go “safe” by starting, as said before with mostly tank/tanky gear (Power/Vitality/Toughness[Soldier] or Power/Toughness/Healing Power[Cleric] are your best bet, and amongst the easier to get, specially soldier, since you can get them from WvW Badges of Honor (the vendor is in your home bl, south of spawn wp and the Supplies stockpile, under a dome, with other vendors), including rings if needed, but from Temples too for karma (read the wiki, it should state what temple have what type of gear), including backpiece and accessories, wich would help a lot.

There is a few builds that could help (disclaimer : it is NOT roaming builds at all, and won’t start to be decent until there is at least 5/10people around you mostly) :

(all the items in those builds that are ascended can be switched to exos/rares to start, even if rares might be as expensive as getting badge gear/temple gear exo).

For the bunker guide, you can switch in PVT gear instead of some of the armor/accessories if you want more survival.
I know i started with full PVT armor till i got a handle on the guardian in 10/25man organized fights(and stopped dying every 2s), before going the full cleric way.

Once you get something relatively working, grab a Greatsword and a Staff, put Save Yourself, Hold the Line and Retreat (with either Book of Wrath or the Invulnerability+reset of Virtues Elite), and go to EotM, and stick to the commander.

The Staff#, Retreat/Save Yourselves and the GS #3 are the tool for moving around fast without depending on other’s swiftness, GS #2,#3,#5 and Staff #1 are the tagging tools (specially Staff #1, past the first burst use it to run around taging everyone with 2/3 attacks top, since it’s a huge 600 range front aoe, it tags a lot) with the AoE loot on Interact activated, while spamming the loot key.

In no time (and by that i mean in a few hours of it if you are green and play around prime time, a bit more otherwise) you’ll get enough badges and karma and gold to get you a decent starting set to play again in normal WvW.

EotM can be frustrating, but you being 80 will give you a great edge (most people there are upscaled leveling their toons, dying in 3/4 hits from lvl80), but it’s pretty much the best place to start farming to build a starter set, specially when you aren’t after specific mats/items/whatever, because it’s a place where, at once, you farm :
xp, World Xp(Ranks, that will give you huge bonuses in WvW once you get Applied Fortitude and Applied Strength maxed), Badges (Complete exo armor set + exo weapons are like 1.5k badges and 10g or so, wich you can basically get in 2/3 evening playing EotM 3/4h), Karma (Temple items and a few other things), items to sell/salvage (for mats or to sell for gold), and gold.

Mostly the thing is mismatched set of runes don’t really work anymore since the most important buffs were moved to 6/6 runes.
And some (namely boon duration) got gutted quite some in the process.

There is still some nice and not too expensive runes to get, that aren’t the best but work.

For backpieces and accessories, there is (normally) Knight (Power/Toughness/Precision) and Soldier (Power/Vitality/Toughness) exo 80 pieces in Temples for 42k karma a pop.

You need likely need different builds and gear for zerging, small scale wvw and/or soloing.

You go with tankier gear in zerg fights. It might take you awhile to kill an NPC sentry.

im sure op wrote he playes guard and dies on his guard in seconds in wvw – and later he wrote he use zerker gear

This is my bunker guardian that I run with at times when I want to roll around with several people or zerging. It has been working nicely as a solo but it’s problem is being very slow. With the WvW guard buffs I get lots of extra power and health. I started with exotic weapons but later got the ascended. This can take a lot of punishment but also deals enough damage that people don’t dare take my hammer to the face. Decent control and support for others. But with the changes coming soon-ish have to take another look if I have to change somethings.

EDIT: Thought I should tell this aswell, incase you didn’t know/forgot: Karma/WvW badge/cultural armors cannot be salvaged. Never put expensive runes into them or you will end up having 20+ gold sitting in your bank, just like me.

Ascended armor is only a 5% difference from exotic, so yeah the gear has changed, but not really. I would first make sure your set up is ok, and then make sure you’re not comparing your numbers against some organized zerg that has a soldier geared hammer train along with some zerker ele back liners that are hitting you so hard.

Well, he said fully buffed, so I belive he mean when he’s on a zergball with 25 might stacks and stuff… My ranger hit an avarage 7k-8k Maul crits on full exotic zerker with no might at all.

I also use Become The Bear for some one-shot crits for the lulz… The damage is kittenedly high, but the build is unreliable since it can’t really sustain the dps.
