WvW needs megaserver tech like EOTM
Hell no. Do you have any idea how annoying and time-consuming it is to bring an existing zerg over to EOTM because of the megaserver?
Also this idea was discussed to death in the brainstorm thread from several months ago.
If thats what we want, why arent we in EoTM? What purpose would it have to make wvw an exact clone of eotm, which many players despise as being nothing more then a braindead karma/champ train for uplevels to farm exp. Of course Eotm has many people it combines players from all servers. Turning wvw into a meaningless gamemode in the model of eotm would drive away tons of wvw players and encourage only farmers. People play wvw for challenge, to test skills, and because they have fun. If its not your thing, find something else to do.
Also if your not seeing ppl on TC its because you started out trailing by 20k on a Friday. If you like EoTM, nothing stopping you from going there. Leave REAL WvW alone.
Honesty is not insulting, stupidity is.

Oh so your solution is to just have dead maps all the time? Oh yea that’s great, that definitely makes me want to play WvW over spvp. I miss the WvW maps being populated. Like I said people like yourself will scream and cry and say this will ruin the game that will ruin the game.. many things in the past have been added that people like you have said would ruin the game.
When it was suggested that cosmetic unlocks be added to the game, people like you said hell no. We have the wardrobe system now and it’s great.
When it was suggested that Spvp have the ability to get pve rewards, people like you said hell no. We now have the reward track system and it’s great.
Something has to be done about there being dead maps in WvW all the time, I used to love WvW but now I am forced to do SPvP because WvW’s population is always dead, either that or I have to play EOTM because it is the only map with an adequate population. Keeping maps dead because it’s too hard for you to join a group on a megaserver is ridiculous, just like when people said it’d ruin the ingame economy to add a trade post to the heart of the mists lol.

There are no WvW players anymore. It’s nearly 3pm and I just logged on and checked in our own home borderlands and there was 3 people following 1 commander, trying to ninja a tower. Lol, WvW is not really WvW if we have a lower population at all times than SPvP.. I can literally get larger group fights in SPvP as of now. I don’t see why you want WvW to remain unpopulated, it’s not fun when there’s no population in WvW. Something needs to be done, there just isn’t enough population in it anymore. Keeping the maps dead because of your pride is ridiculous, like I said in my other post: just like when people said adding a tradepost to the heart of the mists would ruin the ingame economy, it’s also ridiculous to say wvw should remain dead because you had a hard time in EOTM. lol
"""Those things did not completely change the entire gamemode""" -
People also said it’d ruin PVE to have megaserver technology in PvE. It’s doing fine now. PvE’s population died and something needed to be done, WvWs population is dead, something needs to be done.
Well Isnt that news I bet all of TC would like to hear. TC is a dead server because you say so. You come here on a friday couple hours before reset with a terrible idea talking about how dead your server is, when its been ticking over 300 for most of the afternoon.

Earlier on in gw2s life it didn’t have to be a specific day at a specific time frame to be populated. Being populated for 1 hour a week is not really adequate.
Like I said, people said that PvE maps getting megaserver technology would ruin the game. PvE maps were dead and maybe populated for 1 hour per week like the WvW servers are now. They got megaserver tech and it is much better for it. WvW is not fun if there is no population lol.
And in fact I am on TC in BG BL right now and there is like a group of 5 of us going around capping empty territories. It’s no fun anymore. I want populated WvW back, and the majority of the ingame community does as well.
I honestly don’t understand why you would genuinely WANT WvW maps to not be populated, makes me think you’re trolling.
I didnt say I dont want them populated. I think this idea is idiotic. You should stop assuming your idea is the only way, and everyone who disagrees with your idea doesnt want the same essential thing.
Honesty is not insulting, stupidity is.

Everyone knows the population problems in wvw and nobody is happy about it, and this particular idea has been floated around by several people. Its a bad idea plain and simple.
Anet has already stated they will not change WvW to be like EoTm, and are commited to keeping it server based not color based.

Then the only other way is to merge servers. Cut the amount of servers in half then WvW will be populated.
Its not the only other way. If your going to propose solutions you cant have a narrow mind, and I dont mean to offend by that. You have to be open minded. Any game like an mmo will have an inevitable decline in population after a while. WvW has an image for being forgotten and neglected by anet, at least thats how it appears to some. For some players it has just become stale. Having new and exciting additions or changes that dont destroy servers or the gamemode that we love would bring people back. Merging servers and making wvw megaserver systems are extreme and permanent “solutions”. And personally I dont think its even close to that point where those steps are necessary.
Have to also remember, since wvw is a competitive gamemode, players tend to burn out as we put in a ton of hours everyday for guilds and server because we want to feel like we are playing for something. Combine that with real life obligations, school, work, family etc, of course your going to have periods where it feels empty or quiet. People need to take breaks sometimes.

So NA time zone will be even more Q? Merging servers would not fix all that much it will just cause ppl to be more clumped. Its more about coverages and at the end of the day you cant make ppl play doing lighter times zones for the worlds.

That’s why I suggested megaserver technology like what is in EOTM.. there will be no queues and it will be populated all hours of the day. Best solution all around.

Then that not a WvW that groups lumped up together at mostly rng fighting other random groups of ppl. That is RvR or more of TvT but not world vs world.

I’ve got news for you – I’m from a (currently) bronze NA server and we had more people on the maps than you described TC as having at the stated time. Because you happened to go in on a Friday before reset (which is a traditionally dead time, unless the matchup is really close) and based the number of people on the map on how many people you found following a tag, you’ve decided that everything must be changed.
There have been much better solutions than “megaserver technology”, as you call it, to improve the WvW experience. But here’s a different one: close EotM.
It’s primarily a farming zone now, and there are plenty of those in regular PvE. Close it down and give some of the rich rewards it provides to the original WvW maps. Not all of the NPCs of course, since we don’t want WvW becoming a farming run, but overall better drops so that WvWers can afford nice things too.
Here’s another one: 24 suspensions to people who talk about merging servers as though people’s playtimes are a liquid that will settle. If NA prime time is when most servers are busy, all that crowding more people into a smaller space will do is guarantee queues when you most want to play, and leave the rest of the times about as populated as they are now.
Worse, it means that having off-prime time players will be even more important from a PPT point of view, and they are a finite number.
You found nobody on because the matchup was already decided and a relaxing change of pace when there’s nothing at stake is attractive to people. Check back into WvW at an hour of your choosing after reset and see how dead it is. At any time over the weekend, or even into the following week.
Or, join a WvW guild and use your charisma to pull people into WvW when they’re doing something else.
I’ll take playing with my server over the hot mess that megaservering WvW would make, thanks.
Maybe a pure RvR system that you chose that week. But you lose a lot of comunitly unless you can put a lot behind the sides and make the chose set in stone for that week / month.

wait.. what… T1 is dead? Time to start transferring to lower tiers to help balance the matches some more. This has to be a joke..
Megaserver is better?? Megaserver is just blob world bosses now much like how you want WvW to be yet that already exists and is called EoTM. I know several players from my guild that have left ever since megaserver was introduced. That’s one guild on one server so I’m sure my guild and server is not the only one to lose players because of megaserver.. Yes some things might be better with megaserver but not everyone sees it as being better.
WvW is only reason why I’m still around and if it becomes anything like EoTM well that will be the end for me..

No please. The day the make WvW megaserver is the day I retire from this game. Not all players want a giant blobfest. I prefer the small scale multi-front warfare.

Don’t close EotM, don’t bring anything from there. Already some players in WvW are in karma train.
One of the reasons eotm sucks so much is because of the mega server format there.
In real wvw, you have server identity. This forms friendships, guilds, wvw guilds etc.
These people are then able to use a server-based teamspeak, and communicate and coordinate together in an effort to function like a team and retain a sportsmanship-like loyalty towards each other. They can also improve their game play this way. (which the majority of are interested in doing)
In EotM, these conditions cannot be replicated. Especially when you are thrown in a world together with a bunch of people whom you may consider rivals or even long time enemies. (At the very least, strangers.)
EotM is a mish mosh, mystery soup environment, lacking effective communication or sense of loyalty towards one another. Many people there are seriously unskilled, or just don’t care about anything other than ktrain. No one there cares about PPT. (which wvw was originally designed around) They don’t want to learn how to wvw even if you had an effective communication tool. The only thing that can happen there is ktrain, or random skilled wvw guild groups steamrolling said ktrain.
I’m not hating, this is fine how it stands. I have used EotM myself to ktrain, and have used it to level toons in the past. I’m perfectly fine with that.
However, even if you tried to institute a color-based teamspeak system, it would fail without dedicated people, willing to continually organize/run/police said system. And then, who would pay for it? There may or may not be random donations made to keep it running. Lacking any sense of “server loyalty”, I doubt there would be consistent donations or efforts of organization/policing etc.
There would also be a potentially severe increase in TS trolling/hacking that no one would want to deal with. Most server-based TS’s are somewhat secure and monitored, or at least have a system to deal with spies/trolls. This is virtually impossible to replicate in an EotM world.
Also, with such large, generic, wvw populations, how would a world color host/coordinate wvw training events and things of that nature? These types of events are common place on many servers. Again, fostering a sense of teamwork, loyalty, & potentially developing friendships.
I’m not sure if you understand just how in-depth wvw-by-server is.
There’s so much more I could say but, this is enough lol
So……. no loyalty, no pride, no effective communication, no fostered learning environment, and a good sized portion of the population who couldn’t give a kitten less.
This would kill wvw altogether, guaranteed.
No please. The day the make WvW megaserver is the day I retire from this game. Not all players want a giant blobfest. I prefer the small scale multi-front warfare.
If you want WvW to have a tiny amount of players, then why not play SPvP? The original WvW Fans from release (like myself) enjoy a highly populated WvW, In fact that is the way it was intended to have a large number of players lol. Having a dead population in WvW kills the fun for any real fan of WvW. I ran around for like 2 hours last night in our home borderlands and I could not find a soul lol.
The WvW population is dead compared to what it used to be, something needs to be done to repopulate it or soon WvW will be insignificant. In fact, most of the guilds, friends, players that I’ve known since release have switched from WvW to SPvP because there just is not the population for WvW anymore. Without megaserver technology people like myself whenever we go into wvw will have to run around for an hour alone.. just to find nothing and go back into Spvp.
I bought guild wars 2 mainly because of the large battles in WvW, I loved it at release there was always plenty of people in WvW on ALL maps at all times. That has clearly changed and anyone who denies that is just plain ignorant to be honest.

I have no “pride” in a WvW that has 0 players on every single map except 1 map that has 5 players on it following a commander tag lol. If that’s the numbers I wanted I’d SPvP.
You act in your entire post as if the entire game is about an outside program (teamspeak) which lol, is as far from the truth as you can get.
Once again, at release there was always plenty of people online to populate every WvW map, that is just NOT the case anymore. And that is quite clear.
@brewer, do you actually use your servers ts? do you know what map hopping is? Servers dont blob every map at all times if thats what your so upset about, they are usually on 2-3 maps and hop to defend/cap stuff. If you ever actually use ts, you would know whats going on. Otherwise I have to think your just trolling saying TC has 0 players on any map except 1 with 5 people on a tag, if that were true, which its not, TC should be #24 ticking 5.
If you dont care about your server and have no server pride, and want to see more people, and really seem to love Eotm for some reason. GO TO EOTM, whats stopping you. Everthing YOU want is there.

Dude, you have a seriously skewed view of your own server.
If you are having trouble finding fights, seek out [USSR], [SE], [Hel], [FLOT], [DIS], [CERN] or any of the other TC guilds I see literally every night in WvW.
Sounds like you play during night time, I think every server is that quiet during night/morning etc. If you gathered every single night/morning player over all servers, you *might* have enough to stack one map on each of 3 servers daily ?
“Understanding is a three edged sword: your side, their side, and the truth.”
“The objective is to win. The goal is to have fun.”
Now I know people on this forum will cry, (there were even people crying saying that Arenanet would go bankrupt IRL when I suggested cosmetic unlocks, now we have cosmetic unlocks and everything is fine, there were also people who said that if you got pve rewards in pvp it’d ruin the game) but in reality the forums are generally just the vocal minority, the vast majority of the ingame community would want populated wvw maps trust me.
EDIT: I also wanted to comment to people saying “MEGASERVER TECHNOLOGY WILL RUIN THE GAME!!!” People said that before they added megaserver technology for PvE as well. PvE now has megaserver technology and it is MUCH better for it.
This is just a whole lot of empty rhetoric about how change is good and the silent majority agrees with you, etc. If you want to make a decent case, don’t waste your time or my time with these insubstantial arguments.
I am on a T1 server (Tarnished Coast) and any time of the day (even right now, as of 2:10pm, middle of the day) there is like a small group (less than 10 people) on any map at any given time. Earlier in gw2s life the maps were always populated but now only EOTM seems to be adequately populated. I think that all maps should use megaserver technology to populate them. Set up like 3v3v3 servers like EOTM instead of 1v1v1 there just isn’t enough people in wvw for that anymore. It would make alot of people happy to see the wvw maps populated again.
Instead, let’s watch a video from one of your opponents from just a month ago, not because I particularly enjoy zerging videos, but because it exposes how wrong you are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCI-GEp9Cxc
That’s not a 10v10, not even close.
Now it is true that on most servers you don’t get large clashes like that at every time of the day, and there have been some proposals to merge some of the smaller WvW servers together. That isn’t what you’re suggesting here.
What you’re asking for is for all players to be shunted into a single megaserver system for WvW which will give fully populated maps at all times of the day. This would be great for people who like really big zergs, and play at odd hours, and are too casual to bother moving to a more populated server or care about how their team performs. This sounds like an EotM player to me.
WvW players need more than that, because WvW is a team game that has to work at many levels. Yes, there are PvE events that require coordination and can be done with the megaservers, but even those are mostly just learning about a static event chain. Successful WvW requires constant communication, knowing your enemies and your allies, and responding to the actions of others.
Whether you are talking about commanders, scouts, roamers, infantry, or part of a raiding guild, the team that forms a WvW server is invested in a community that has a history, they’ve chosen a home with a particular style of WvW (people who are tired of constant zerging will move down tiers), and they require tools like TS to work together effectively. That’s all lost once you’re thrown into a giant pool of people which changes constantly.
What’s worse, if you try to lump all the servers into three permanent teams, you risk losing balance entirely because people could just move to the most populated team. Even under the current system, servers usually don’t have a guaranteed win or loss in their matchup because they can get paired up or down the ladder.
Unlike EotM, WvW is about lengthy matchups, not just the play on the ground, so it doesn’t work if you don’t have maps that are continuous through the week. See how much groaning there is just when the game forces a restart when a patch comes online. Now think what would happen if you spent hours getting a keep upgraded, with your whole team defending, then your shard was just shut down because there weren’t enough players. The kind of drama that keeps WvW exciting will disappear if a WvW map becomes just one of many shards.

Just ignore OP. According to his past post history he has been crying about WvW being empty for 4 months now.. When you start to point out that he is just full of it he switches the subject to PVE and megaserver and claims the game is so much better now.
He is comparing WvW from release up until now.. Of course WvW is not going to be as much populated as when the game was first released. I highly doubt that any T1 server has 3 empty maps with 5 players all on one map.. Which he stated is how it is on TC.
He claims he bought this game because of wvw and the large fights but most of his past posts have been about PVP and not about WVW.
There are so many intelligent replies here, theres not much i can think to add but mega server did ruin the game.
Maybe not ruin but deffinatly made the game worse. It shattered our communities and is likely the main cause of declining population aside from the game just being old. Who plays mmo’s and thats likes to constantly be thrown in with strangers?
Those of us who work on community building were kittened so hard by mega servers. I think many who didnt just quit went deeper into wvw as a way to mitigate the dmg. Having bodies in the map is not enough, they need to be people too.
The ppl who make this game worth playing would not stick around in a mega server enviroment and that would be the end of it.
(edited by Synosius.9876)
EotM could be great (casual) fun, if the commanders there would be PvPers instead of PvErs.
Seeing commanders purposefully steering clear of an enemy zerg (smaller, bigger or same size, no matter) makes me sick.
Removing ascended mats from EotM was a step into right direction. Next up would be removing access to EotM until level 80 and removal of karma, coin and chests. Finally, remove the structures too because no one cares about holding them, only capping them for the rewards.
What would be left is just pure, beautiful zerg on zerg action with a kittenload of body bags.
wvw doesn’t need megaserver, it just needs some work and dev time spent on it, and better rewards to attract people in.
T1 EU server, 10.30pm Sunday night: 30 man q for EB, no other q’s , outnumbered on one other map, no visible comm on 3 of the four maps. Three tags in home BL but they were all gvgs at the bottom of the map.
They could megaserver wvw and close eotm if they did something – made gvg a reality with good quality maps, a ladder, a competition, etc.
They could also rewrite the server code to allow more people per instance in WvW, and then when it works, combine all the maps into one ginormous WvW map.
I still think the sollution is to rank the guilds and dish them out on every reset

OP was not informed that this week is not a push week.
If you are on TC and don’t see more than 5-10 people on at any given point you may be doing something wrong. (That goes for T1 in general.)
As for making WvW like EOTM, I’d quit. Flat out, EOTM is boring to me, not fun, all it is for is Ktraining/leveling alts, and even that is boring. If WvW which has fun times, were made boring for me like EOTM is, then I would have no option but to quit GW2 completely. I only play for WvW anyways.

What do you mean by rank the guilds? What happens to people like me that are in casual guilds? A guild with over 400+ members yet a handful of us wvw? I’d be stuck in crappy match ups cause my guild doesn’t rank high enough??
um no
If you are on TC and don’t see more than 5-10 people on at any given point you may be doing something wrong. (That goes for T1 in general.)
Eight hours ago, TC capped BGBL Bay, Hills and Garri with exactly 6 people. I was in the map, with 2 more people. And that was it.

Then you should be moving out of T1 as soon as possible and let a more active WvW server take your place.
There isn’t. WvW population is really small right now.
And BG won the push week last week. Wouldn’t be fun in T2.
People from other tiers knows its not a push week lol.
T1 doesn’t need to login and play to retain their ranks.

Not EoTM.
But when you’re in an unbalanced matchup it’d be nice to see some fresh blood.
At the time that happened I had a group of 10-15 TC chasing my group of 8 who was running Havoc on BGBL. (Same time as they capped the keeps with the 6.)
