I’m a WvW noob, but interested in playing more of it. I’ve tried it a few times before, but it seems to take a long time to find anything to do or to find a group that’s doing something.
So, as a solo player, what can I do in WvW that’s fun? What kind of things can I do that are useful besides following a zerg? Which of the 4 maps should I join when I go to WvW?

Currently I have 4 maxed out characters with full exotics (Elementalist, Guardian, Thief and Mesmer). They’re all kinda built around a balance between survival and damage, not really excelling in anything, not sucking at anything either.

Just who the hell do you think I am!?

Depends on what you think its fun.

There is a nice video showing small group tactics in WvW on ANet channel:

If you think any of those are fun you can go out and do lots of it solo or with a few people.

When I haven’t got guildies online to WvW with I quite often pick up my mesmer, go to an enemy borderlands, solo a supply camp and wait for enemies to come
Taking out dolyaks is always useful to your server too.

Well if you’re a solo player, you can go around looking for other roamers to duel, kill yaks, flip camps, contest waypoints. Some of these will be more challanging then others. You don’t have to zerg to be useful either. When you say there’s not much action going down there could be a lot of reasons for that. Lower tier servers have less people in wvw usually, which means less action, no opportunity to defend keeps/towers maybe. The wvw guilds could be running events/dungeons. Some also mentioned that a lot of people were trying out new games. Hope you find something to do.

Frankly speaking, solo’ing in wvw isn’t nearly as fun as running with a small group. Do yourself a favor and just find a couple of good players to run with, and you will have so many things you can do and have fun with. You can ninja towers, ambush enemies, control supply camps, etc. Running solo is risky, and you won’t be accomplishing much at the end of the day.

P.S: The best thing you can do as a solo player is defending. You just need to know how to position AC’s, and you’re set to go…

Which server are you on? Some servers are more active than others in WvW. I also recommend you join a guild, or look for ‘commander icons’ on the map (blue icons) which are players who can potentially guide your team mates to more organised battles.

Even if you aren’t running with the zerg, listening to zerg-radio (your worlds team-speak) can be very useful. You get info on the current goals and about enemy movements and Commanders ask quite often for special groups as well.

this, a million times

its so amazing knowing troops movements, it makes it very much easier to figure out where you can be as a solo player and be a thorn in the enemy’s side. and on the flip side, reporting troop movements gives your large groups much needed info for counterplay, like rushing a tower on the other side of the map before the enemy can be there or setting up a wipe at their position.

a solo player can easily do this. (but whether you are listened to or not depends on the large group commanders’ skill.)

If you are going solo, I’d say pick one of the 2 invader BLs and hang around near the south camp/island. There’s usually a lot of other solo players/small groups running around that area, so you can get in some cool fights/duels.
But as other people mentioned, if you wanna get the max fun out of WvW, find a guild that runs in smaller groups and go wreak havoc.
