WvW seems a bit broken right now
All i do on this game is WvW and I can tell you I’m starting to look for another game (i’m downloading a new one as we speak). The state of WvW is at an all time low. With this new ranking system putting T8 servers against T5 servers. Hacks/cheats running rampent, zerg balls everywhere i’m surprised there are still this many players (I think its because there are no good games ATM to play).
As it stands right now there are 1, maybe 2 builds on classes that if you want to compete you will need to run those builds. There is no real options for builds in WvW they have piggonholed classes into certain builds and yes Zerg is the way of the herd.
Manyme usee -80 mesmer current main
80 War, Ele, Guar, Rang, thief. 55 engi 16 necro
Oh goody, another upset with zergs thread.
Due to the core mechanics of the game and the lack of dedicated healers or a holy trinity, don’t expect it to change any time soon. WvW has always had blobbing the most effective strategy mid-fight, and always will until the day it dies.
Quit to play my 2 favorite competitive fps and moba games ported to my favorite OS.
News flash…. no one is forced to zerg. Create a havoc group and go roam if you want to do that. A lot of people zerg because they want to.

WvW has been this way since the dawn of WvW… Don’t see it changing anytime soon… Aion, Warhammer, DaoC, GW1, all games with WvW and keeps that end up being zerg fests.

Give large groups of players a speed de-buff. Zergs as they are right now are one of the fastest groups in the game. They should be exactly the opposite!
Want to run in a huge herd? You’re going to be slowed down. The AOE that checks for a “zerg” for each team of players could be done every 15 seconds and apply a flat 30% speed de-buff that you cannot clear for 15s. Then the check happens again, still near the large group of friendly players? Speed de-buff. Call it “rough terrain” or something.
This would allow small parties of hostile players to out run a large zerg and harass effectively in open field. Also the ideal way to cross a map wouldn’t be in a huge herd. Even if the group was spamming speed buffs to counter the 30% debuff they would only be as fast as your average Mesmer.
Do this and give people better commander tag options = poof zerg problem solved.

There is no reason not to. Every mechanic in the game from AoE to Supply costs drives large groups. Yet there is nothing to drive formation of smaller groups. Large groups are more safe and offer equal, if not substantially more, reward.
We need to discourage zergs by making it less safe. (Lowering the reward would only cause player hostility.)
Then we need to give smaller groups the ability to accomplish goals that only the current larger groups can do. (How this is done though must not also make larger groups stronger though.)
This makes smaller groups more rewarding since they can now accomplish more while not punishing larger groups directly just for their numbers.
I have a post on this very thing here;

On the DAoC note however there was a massive active community of strictly 8mans and soloers. We ran the 8man alliance on Alb Classic for ages and it was constantly at the guild cap when DAoC was at it’s peak. This was a good community to actively PuG players for your group if some of your guildies were not on or you were missing specific classes for your group build.
DAoC also had a lot of large reaching CC that this game does not have which would even the playing field against larger numbers for a short time, and of course AoE hit everyone who decided to stand in it so balling up wasnt such a great idea.
Also the heal range and buff range for DAoC was a lot better, a tank could roam a little way from the group and still receive healing from the healers. In this game you move 2 steps from another player and are out of range which equates to more balling up, drives me nuts.

I love blobs, they drop our guild good loot and provide us shiny armor and weapons. Please keep blobbing up, so I don’t have to find you all individually.
