Solo/Small man WvW
So I’ve been playing since beta, and I’ve roamed around solo most of my time in WvW, it’s the play-style I enjoy the most. Coming from other games that have three realms and open world fighting I find the community in this game very surprising in that they literally just won’t fight. I feel that WvW zones should be a great place to fight solos/smallmans/5 mans/zergs and not an event taking zone where everyone is in a hurry to the next event and avoiding fights along the way at all costs. I completely understand the zergs doing their things but it still amazes me that months after release that people still avoid fights. Hoping the community changes before I bore myself to death chasing people that simply won’t fight. Cheers and hope to see you out there.
You get the most reward from capping objectives, which add points for your server. Why should they fight you where you are? Give them an incentive, defend a yak, camp the JP or something.
Most people are geared and traited for medium/large scale group fights, so usually won’t bother with someone with a well balanced 1v1 spec that simply roflstomps them.
If your a thief, nobody likes thieves.

What this person is trying to say is that 95% of the population are PvE carebears that somehow ended up in WvW because they want their legendary / monthly / watch another progress bar fill up. Having an interesting and engaging fight is none of these thus there is no incentive for them to do anything but run over and over.
Also you’re probably only worth like 3 wxp since you didn’t huddle up in the zerg ball and no one wants to waste time for just 3 wxp we’ve got ballistas to master here man.
Oh I totally understand the system that exsists and why people do what they do, I just find it shocking that in my experiences 70% of duos/solos run from me while I’m solo on my ranger. To me its a community problem, people apparently just don’t enjoy fighting people in WvW zones as much as I’ve seen in other games.
We all play the game Anet made for us, which is capping and sieging. Bit of a snore fest in my opinion but then again, there is nothing to make fights worth it besides the glory of an emote at the end of the duel.
Well that’s the unfriendly way to put it haha. But yes you’re going to have to deny them what they want for a fight.
Otherwise organise dueling sessions behind the Mill on a BL, or sPvP.

Yes you should kill yaks on a map until some commander notices and runs you over with a zergball. Alternatively you can cap supply camps then wait 5 minutes and get run over with a zergball.

And during that time solo players try to stop you killing the yaks? Then when a zerg shows up you run off? If you get hit by a zergball you need to not tunnel vision.
I fight every 1v1 I come across, except when I decide to run a glamour spec. There’s no way in hell I’m going to fight in small scale battles where I’m squishy as heck and hit as hard as a wet noodle.

Okay so we agree that the job of a small man / solo roamer is to kill fluffy red meat piñatas over and over. That’s great and all but you’re doing your realm a disservice by killing them solo since the more people that hit the yak the more points you get (and don’t quote Devon’s post saying that’s not true because he’s wrong).
Also 95% of solo players are there for map completion, so they will see you soloing that fluffy fatty and then turn and run toward the nearest jumping puzzle / spider queen skill point.
I used to run from zergs no problem before they introduced wxp, but they chase me across the whole map so now I just waypoint to spawn and find the next dolyak when pressing lookback shows me a blob of 50 baddies!!!
What about having some fights in a zone dedicated to player vs player.

I don’t think we agree at all, keeps don’t reach tier 3 if any yaks are making it in. Sounds like your tier has a lot of problem or your solo build simply isn’t working out. Try sPvP maybe.
sPvP, standing in smaller circles and running away from fewer people. Sounds like fun.
In guild wars 2 carebears get to run from anything resembling an even fight and claim theyre great at pvp at the same time!
Stop fighting thieves and ele’s I guess they are the ones that run

WvW IS PvP, lol. This confused concept that WvW is PvE-oriented is nonsense. Yes, your using your PvE gear, but it’s still a PvP enviornment, and all you cowards that run away need to stay in PvE if your not going to fight someone(or at the very least stay in the zerg so your helpless self doesn’t get ganked xP) I have this problem where the only people that will fight me, want to do it as 3-5vs1…..which is pathetic if you ask me. Also, have a little class, if you see 2 people having a 1v1 in the middle of nowhere….then let them have at it!!!!!! I’m so tired of actually finding someone that will fight and then immediately getting runover midfight by the zerg that happened to be walking past -_- Why do I have to set this sort of thing up? why can’t people just have a general sense of letting us roamers fight each other? I don’t need your help, I will fight them 1vsX, and hopefully my opponent will actually feel the same way(though I doubt it -_-)
Wxp bro. People now get a tangible reward for bush hogging 5 people with 80.
A) The borderlands are too small. They’re made up choke points, cliffs, archways, and keeps with too few open areas for small groups to make clean engagements or, most importantly, disengagements. There’s no room to make good fights and large groups move around the map so quickly that they can collapse upon you before your fight is even finished. Zergs can clog up an entire route and box you in quite easily, so running in a small gangs is extremely risky.
B) Objectives give you the best rewards. Player kills don’t. That promotes blitzing keeps while defenders are occupied elsewhere on the map and avoiding prolonged engagements, which small groups would be able to side door or back door.
C) WvW is set up around servers, not guilds or groups. If it doesn’t benefit the server, no incentive is provided to do it. Small man groups rarely benefit server warfare, since they avoid all the things that bring in server prestige in favor of fair fights on open ground. Server oriented groups actually hate them.
Small gang fighting doesn’t really exist in this game. The deck is too stacked against them. It would also require drastic changes to fix that, which I doubt Anet will ever even consider. 8v8 days of DAoC are gone. Let them rest in peace.

Devon edited his post the next day to say that yes, you DO get more points for each person who tags a Dolyak, though he still won’t tell us exactly how that mechanic works:
If I’m on my engineer or mesmer I’ll fight any solo person I come across.
If I’m on my guardian I’ll ignore any solo person I come across as I’m trying to get to my guild group where my boon / healing build will do more than just waste time fighting some 1v1 person that I’ll never kill unless they’re glass cannon and pretty bad.
I think a lot of people will have different characters set up for different jobs and they know quite well to avoid 1v1 with people that have dedicated 1v1 builds. Even if they win, they wasted a lot of time that would be better spent supporting their guild group.
My glass cannon staff ele you’ll never meet alone so no need to discuss him :p

While sometimes its nice to have a good 1v1 fight, quite often people simply have other things to do in the WvW map. For example, the other day I ran across an enemy mesmer sitting on a hill trying to ‘duel’ people running past – when i just ran away he invited me to a party and flamed me for being weak/a noob etc – actually I was on my way to help defend our tower that 20+ people from his server were attacking.
Unless I’m specifically out for solo roaming fights, I will avoid them and run from them to get to the next thing that I need to do to help my server – scout an objective, flip a camp, ambush a dolyak, etc. Fighting one player where I have a chance of being sent back to the waypoint isnt helpful to the teams cause. Your best shot for this would be to going to a map like your own borderlands that you own completely, and hanging around the south where enemies are likely to pass through when solo roaming.

I guess you are agreeing with me. haha
The reason I didn’t name this forum Solo 1v1 duels is because that isn’t how I feel. 1vX is the reason I go to WvW, the community is just more worried about events than good fights, which is the reason I leveled up to 80 and geared myself out. 1v1s or 1v2 or 1v3. Also small man group action is pretty fun actually but Anet doesnt give much reason to do it, sadly.
Absolutely. The roaming community does it for the fun of it. Its a shame there isn’t more of us.
As a Roamer I feel you alls pain. I also crave small fights in wvw and go out of my way to find them.
Good places to find a small fight: At a sentry. After (or during o-o) soloing a camp. At world events like dredges and ogres. Alongside SMC. Near Yaks (don’t kill the Yak, be patient). And behind a zerg, there are always slow stragglers ripe for picking off.
But many will run. Since you are a ranger there is no excuse for letting them get away. Swoop and shoot them with a cripple shot when in range. Daze them after that. Let your pet cripple them and knock them down(you’re using a wolf right? ~_^) . I’m a kittenecromancer and I still catch people and eat them. You can definitely do it.

We run 5 guys every night. Our tier has legit like 3-4 other guilds that do the same. It does exist. Just in small pockets. I have invited “8manners” (5mans in this game) to move to our tier to compete daily but all the others just whine about the Zergs their groups face. Well, until you guys man up and move to a different tier you will be faced with 20-80 mans full of terrible players who can’t win without that many in player vs player combat.

I completely agree with all of this, and yeah I do most of those things. Just boring killing people that wont even turn around and swing. Which is sad that I don’t even have to try and convince you guys about how many people run away.
i’ve basically only roamed since release day (my main leveled up from 15-30, 45-60, and 70-80 on wvwvw). the only thing that i dislike with the current wvwvw is that it’s way too easy to spot solo players. i don’t zerging because it feels to easy, so i hit last of the pack reinforcements, camps, etc. i like having the mindset of stalking and hunting my prey on a ranger, using my knowledge of the map to my advantage, staying just off the well traveled paths. but if players have a similar issue to me, i can see a red line at a distance i can’t even click on them.
lately, i’ve been hitting zergs more often. but that may be due to FA hitting T2 and i’m starting to play on more during NA prime-time. i have exotics weapons for all different situations but even then there’s not much 1 player can do against 15+ except port as fast as possible.
I think the world versus world is already perfect how it is actually. People can play as they want. Zerg, small group or alone.
I almost have been playing 1700 hours at gw2, because i play while i’m at work and also during most of my free time at home, as i start working at 7pm untill 7am, even when i don’t work, i don’t have much thing to do during this part of the night.
Most of those hours were spend in solo roaming (d/d while moving or to fight 4+ players, if they are 3 or less, i go for d/f), not because solo is better or cooler, but because when you play with someone else, if that “someone” does something stupid, it’s annoying. It’s better to play by yourself, because if you fail to do something, you can only blame yourself.
But i still play world versus world with my guild a few hours per week. Not much (10 hours per week), because i quickly get bored, but i still have 38k kills and i turn on my commander tag during off peak when there is no commander on the map, only when we have to defend something and when the attack is repelled, i turn it off and go back to roaming.
The only thing that i think is annoying and should be removed, is the emotes, because those who abuse them are usually group or zerg members or those you were about to finish and were saved by a zerg, even more when they kill one solo roamer, they have to spam it.
But it’s also funny to fight those guy, because when i manage to kill them, i try to keep the last of them (or one of them if i can catch him alone) at 50% hp while they are laying on the ground and don’t leave them the possibility of getting up, untill they give up and die slowly. If the target doesn’t have a good mobility class, i pull him a mob and look at him trying to kill it. If he manage to do it, i down him once again and do the same cycle over again, untill he get bored. All that without emote from my part, because it’s evil ! xD
