I have this opinion on WvWvW for a while, since many player have been complaining about how skill is unbalance or stuff like that due to duration of stun/fear/immobilize and I’m assuming you guys have never played mobile games such as Dota or League, as tittle say, most of the time when you play WvWvW its similiar to Dota/League feature as most MOBA game player would know that the ability to permanent stun the other team or immobilize is the only way to achieve ownange especially in team fight when you can lock their team in a spot and just DPS them down as quickly as possible to achieve a wipe. Its all about the strategy of MOBA games trying to lock team and fight them in that way with the right item sets in this which case your gear. Just my point of view.

Have you even played any mobas? There’s much more than aoe stunning and damage. I haven’t played dota enough to make comments about the meta but in LoL the pros don’t use aoe comps that often. Last season was dominated by assassins that could take out a carry as soon as a fight starts. Sometimes teams use heavy poke comps and simply avoid fighting until the enemies have taken damage, sometimes they pick a hyper carry and rest of the team is there just to protect him. Split pushing and picking champions with good disengage are very strong tactics vs full aoe teams.
Overall the gw2 wvw meta is very simple. There are usually one or two builds per class that are the better than other options. I think the biggest reason for this is that anet are balancing the game mostly for pve. I believe the game would be much more interesting if projectile reflections were removed and there was a buff that would give life steal or heal every time you hit an enemy. Also, lemongrass poultry soup needs to be removed.

When you hear things like “Meta-achievement” that means the big achievement that is based off the little ones.
When you hear meta when talking about WvW they mean the games (Or processes) people play in game.
Take for instance zerging; it is not a game mode in itself but can be concidered as a meta game. You must understand the finer points of it to be successful (IE; balling up, rallying, and combo fields).

The meta is essentially the most common (and often the most effective) playstyle derived by the community. Most of the time the “meta” is based on experimentation/theorycrafting/trial and error. I’m not sure if you play League, but this thread explains what the word ‘meta’ means in that game. If not then… I’ll just borrow one of the quotes and replace it with GW2 classes:

Looking up the etymology of the word ‘meta’ and attempt to relate it to games may cause some head-scratching. :p

I can speak for DotA 2, and there’s a better change on dota to win a game if you have a balanced composition of the team, which is not seen in GW2. Not in PvE not in PvP not in WvW. It’s all about dmg here (maybe not in PvP where we have also bunkers) but other places for sure.
I kinda hate this. I thought we would have some roles at least but everyone is now running in a zerg train spaming whatever you can on enemies or enemy zerg trains.

I don’t think you get it entirely, OP.
This game is indeed an attempt to recreate MOBA style PvP with a standard MMO PvE play in the backdrop. That much is pretty clear from the developers insistence from the combat and class design, the focus on 5v5 on maps so active that those 5 people will never really be fighting together .
WvW is clearly not part of this equation. It is a tacked on game feature that doesn’t really mesh up that well with the PvE and PvP combat and design in this game. Why is it there? It’s something a significant portion of the MMO community wants and isn’t really being served since the Mythic games (DAOC and Warhammer) are no longer fully functional and most other games attempts at it have been mediocre.
I hear, however, World of Warcraft is taking a stab at this now…. but will it be good enough to lure these people to an almost 10 year old subscription game? Eh….probably not IMO.
