I got my monthly last night, glad I won’t have to touch WvW again until the end of next month or at least until this boring match is over.
I think even after the match resets I’ll probably bail as soon as one server (unless it’s TC obviously :p) gets all three orbs, since the matches are over in all but name when that happens.

7 days is competitive. 7 days balances the weekends and weekdays.
I’ve heard it might go to 2wk matches, though, and that would be too long. It’d take months to climb the ladder and therefore it would make the server competition even more top-heavy.
IMO, it’s good where it is.

That’s just….I don’t even know what to say. Been there and came back from that darkness. Yes, we guys down in the bottom got steam-rolled like that about a month ago, but we mustered up, got our stuff together, and started making a presence. Don’t give up, at least try to server recruit now that the 7 day transfer limit will be going into effect tomorrow. There are guilds out there that would take up this challenge and put SoR in their places….either that or leave and learn some techniques from other servers that have closer matches and go back to use that information to help your numbers.

One day would be fine when this happens, but for the most part two days would be too short. We got rolled by SoR last match, it sucked but I have totally enjoyed the current match and the one two weeks ago, seven days was perfect.
This inbalance isn’t about match length, it’s about server match up.

As it is, the match is only meaningful until the server with the most population inevitably gets all three orbs (otherwise known as the “I Win Button”).

Naw. Competitive matches have orb swings all day, back and forth. I think that quite often the correlation of a winning server having 3 orbs is misinterpreted as causation.
Orbs make WvW more interesting.

Not really. Orbs give a force multiplier to whatever team is currently winning, which just unbalances the match.
It happens in nearly every single bracket every week. Highest pop/winning server gets all three orbs, match spirals into boring nonsense as that server gets a 200k+ point lead. It’s not a fluke, and the situation you describe practically never happens.
Giving a force multiplier or other massive numerical advantage to whatever team is already strongest is practically the worst game design you can even implement into a competitive game. There’s a reason that this sort of thing is universally reviled as ridiculously amateurish and poor design throughout the entire games industry.

This point is correct. These winning servers would still keep the 3 orbs and most of the map without the 3 orbs bonus. This begs the question, why give these dominating servers even more bonuses to make their enemies more miserable?
I’m sure most of us here have been on the dominating side AND on the side getting crushed. When we’re dominating, we would like to think that we “outplayed” (more likely outnumbered, heh) our opponent without needing the 3-orb bonuses. So the scores might be closer, but I don’t think we need it and I don’t want it. When we’re on the losing side because we were outplayed since the beginning of the match, the 3-orb bonus is just adding insult to injury because suddenly you get a lot more “macho” glass-cannon enemies acting like they’re something special.
Fighting for the orbs are fun, and there should be an incentive for winning/holding on to the orb. However it’s also quite obvious that something isn’t quite right and hopefully a minor change to the orb incentive could make Wv3 more interesting.

Precisely why it’s an extremely amateurish design that any game designer with even a single title under their belt would be embarrassed to have tied to their name. This type of design is not new, there’s decades of data that show it’s poor design.
Maybe it’s different from the view of people that have not done game development and design, but for someone that has, this type of garbage design sticks out like a sore thumb.
They shouldn’t go to two week matches until after they have guesting and paid server transfers implemented.
They shouldn’t go to two week matches ever. What’s the benefit of extending the match for a whole week.
I don’t think they will remove orbs or even nerf the orb bonuses. They really wanted to put a capture the flag game and needed to give incentive for us to play it, lol.

I have no problem with an orb bonus, but make it one that’s not so obviously overpowered.
Give the server +XX points per round for having all 3 orbs or something. Not 15% health and 150 points to each stat. That just makes a lopsided match (like the TC/ET/SoR match this week) even more lopsided

The map seems to be designed out of an idea that all three servers are fighting at the same time with the same presence at any given time. But once one side wavers then the more populated one side will take out the remaining third side. Scoring system doesn’t help either.

This. It’s demoralizing facing 3 vs 3 and you could easily match up with them, but by default they win due to orbs. I’m confused why orbs as is even exist, it just tips the balance on the more dominant server. =/

orbs run counter to the vision of having every person feel like they can make a difference.
when you are being roflstomped by another server, your server’s population declines from a disinterest in fighting a losing battle against insurmountable odds. the few loyal or stupidly stubborn players left can’t do anything but be spawn camped because they are given a buff worthless to making them stronger, and the roflstomping server gets a buff that helps them stomp even harder.
the added circumstance of daily transfers exacerbates the problem to a downward spiral of unfun total dominance. and the orbs are part of it.
in a competitive match, orbs are nothing more than a power play. and there are other ways to achieve a power play situation that dont allow 1 side to just have more stats than another.
for example, a 10-20 minute respawn timer when queues are in effect (allowing you to join pve and hold your place in the wvw map in the down time) would allow for something like a zerg crushing another and taking a piece or 3 of territory. filtering to roflstomping matches… well there aren’t queues anyways so dedicated players would be encouraged to swap to losing servers so they aren’t bombarded with ridiculous down times and queue times. but it encourages super zerging, which i don’t think would be right for wvw.
or you could do something like.. acquiring an additional 40-50 points worth of territory in a single point count round gives you a 1-3 hour stat boost effect, stacks duration. its possible to get in competitive matches and has little relevance in roflstomps where the winning side has enough of the territory that they CAN’T get it, but a good push from a losing server gives you a great boost to swing the land count back to even.
or make siege equipment cost more supply based on currently held territory.
there are so many different things anet could do besides encouraging roflstomps that still allow power plays in the same fashion of orbs. saying they’re fine when they obviously aren’t in the bad matchups is just sweeping a major issue under the rug.

The orb mechanic only snowballs due to morale or casuals, while it helps a coordinate group fight a coordinated group… my little Shadow Legion can often beat more numbers with no orbs, we’ve had to fight dominating servers since launch and I don’t think any of us complain that players with 3 orbs are too stronk. Not really sure what all the q.q is about.
I was thinking we had it bad but kitten that matchup is horrible.

@Insanemaniac, I completely agree. There’s no reason for the orbs to be a pure numerical advantage like they are now, especially considering it is essentially always the server that’s already winning that picks up all three orbs.
Giving massive numberical bonuses like this in competitive PvP is simply horribly bad game design.
There are dozens of ways they could make the orbs desirable and meaningful without being a pure numerical stat advantage that simply unbalances the match for the duration after the dominant server captures the orbs.
As it stands the match should simply reset upon one server capturing all three orbs, because the match is actually over in all but name when that happens.

Even if orbs give what outmanned buff gives, because people will still strive to get them. Because at the moment orbs are just a nail in the coffin for bigger servers to abuse the system, take everything, and spawn camp the few people that actually do play till the end.

It’s not fun at all. I haven’t been able to play WvW for the past 3 days, and there is still 2 more days to go til a new match up. It’s not just this server match up. Every server I’ve been to has either crushed or gotten crushed by the opponent within 2 days after starting the match up.
Things they could possibly do:
1) Orbs need to be taken out OR given to the losing teams, instead of the winning teams.
2) Outmanned needs to trigger at 1:4 and give stat bonuses.
3) Shorten matches to 3-5 Days. Prefer 4.
4) Other?
