I play wvw for 15-20 hours per week on average. During the season I sometimes played 25-30 hours a week during key battles. I min-max my characters with ascended gear where possible (ie. guild missions, dungeons). I don’t PVE much except when I need to get something (ie. monk runes only obtainable from AC vendor) or AP hunting while waiting in queue. I use all my badges/laurels on wxp potions to get as many rank points as possible. I donate all my siege to my guild. I have few skill points because I spend all my resources and time making superior siege.

I play to win regardless if it is fun or not. I have put countless hours into the game. I regularly do the thankless jobs of scouting, yak escorting, siege refreshing – because it is needed to win. I don’t have fun doing it, nor does anyone, but we do it because we need to do it.

I pvp because it is challenging and team combat is very fun. For me, the reward is about overcoming your enemy with builds, tactics, strategy. I have had the pleasure of this reward for over a year of WvW.

For me, a tangible reward (wvw chest) which is the reward gained for competing in a tournament is equal to the skill and dedication (time) that the players put into the competition. Including the challenge of overcoming the best players in a game, there is an additional reward, a tangible reward which says “You Did It! Enjoy this as a prize!”

My server, my guild, myself – we’ve all invested hundreds of hours into competing in this tournament. Hundreds of thousands of hours in total – to win. This needs a tangible reward worthy of the dedication by the players to achieve the goal – whether you place first or last.

The tangible reward needs to apply to all players, with an exclusive reward to set the best servers apart from the rest.

Since Season 1’s tangible rewards are such a colossal failure (compared to the time dedicated by every player involved). Here is how season 2 will work:


One) No achievements. Instead introduce a way to track players involvement in the game: objectives taken, objectives defended, yaks killed, yaks escorted, supply used, siege weapon kills, walls destroyed, bloodlust stomps, jumping puzzle wins (lol, not), etc.

Now we know who is playing WvW and who is playing just for achievements.

Create a graph. Reward the players participation in WvW based on what they have achieved via the tracked stats.

Two) Make rewards for all players involved, regardless of server. Let’s face it, some servers are never going to win, but their players still try to win. Some servers could win (very skilled, invest a lot of time) but can never win because of coverage wars.

By tracking player stats, you can reward players individually (personal reward, better reward) and globally (server reward, lesser reward). The personal reward will include useful things to a player: gear, dyes, skins, boosters, gold, siege equipment, wxp vials, badges, titles, pets. The server reward will include fluff: gold/silver/bronze finisher.

Now you can be good at WvW but don’t have to be on the best server to get the best rewards. The best servers get a small reward that can be shown off in wvw and non-wvw (limited time items: finishers, pets, skins, etc.).


Three) Make the rewards equal to the time involved. If you invest 10 minutes in WvW, you get 10 minutes worth of rewards. If you invest 200 hours in WvW, you get 200 hours worth of rewards. The time is related to the stats tracked – you can’t gain a reward for afking/doing nothing.

To prevent abuse, you average out a score for all the stats tracked. This will prevent someone from AFKing in a tower and getting credit for defense or repairing a wall that is being trebbed (wasting supply). Achievement hunters must actively participate to gain a reward, versus completing the current achievement meta to gain the reward.

The reward is tangible to the time invested. This reward says to all players, “We appreciate all the time you’ve invested in our game. You could’ve been playing one of our competitors games, but you chose not to, so we’ve got some great rewards for you!” You achieved a rating of A++ (F, D, C, B, A, whatever) based on your contribution to WvW. Here is your A++ reward! Your server placed 2nd, you get a Purple Dolyak Mini until the next season.


Four) Everyone gets rewarded. All servers get rewarded. (I am not being biased here, I am on a 1st place server and I hate hearing how non-1st place servers get nothing). Gold/Silver/Bronze leagues have the similar rewards for 1st/2nd/3rd etc.

Example:
Gold League
1st Big-sized Gold Dolyak Finisher; back-slot skin that says “I’m #1”
2nd Medium-sized Silver Dolyak Finisher; back-slot skin that says “I’m 1st place loser”
3rd Small-sized Bronze Dolyak Finisher; back-slot skin that says “Stick to PVE”
4th Small-sized Ghost Dolyak Finisher
5th Tiny-Sized Devon Carter Finisher where he uses a finger gun to execute the enemy
6th Something.

Silver League
Same as above but instead of Dolyak Finishers, you get Rabbit Finishers.

Bronze League
Same as above but you get Pikachu Finishers.

Wood League
Same as above but you get Will Smith Finishers.

TL;DR: I highlight the main points. But if that doesn’t help:
a) Track players involvement in WvW.
b) Personal rewards (player skill rewarded) and server rewards (team-work rewarded).
c) Base rewards off players involvement in WvW.
d) Reward everyone / every server even if you are just changing the colour/image of the reward.

Haven’t we already ask that we stop rewarding servers for being stacked? If any rewards be given, it needs to be badges based. Win season, gets xxx amount of badges. No more PVE goodies to fill the ques with those who didn’t want to be there in the first place. Anet thought that the achievements were a good way to track player involvement in WvW, but the truth is that no it doesn’t and created hostilities within the server itself. Where’s the rewards for the good scout? Where’s the rewards for those dying to defend from a zerg? Why reward bigger blobs? Rewarding players is a better idea than to reward the entire server for wins. I rather see a good reward for one who dies a lot in WvW fights than reward a member of a blob who easily cruise into the camp/tower/fort/castle for that easy cap.

I would personally like to hear from ANet on the feasibility of individually tracking a player’s significant war efforts in WvW. Jumping puzzles do not count as significant.

Where’s the rewards for the good scout?

How do you reward a scout? How do you know that said person is scouting or if they are afk in a tower? How do you know if they acutely relay information? I agree scouts should be rewarded but how do you do that with out it being farmable?

Where’s the rewards for those dying to defend from a zerg?

In what game do you get rewards for dieing? How would you scale these rewards? Would I be able to just suicide into a keep and die to the zergs and gain rewards?

Why reward bigger blobs?

Anything that rewards 1 person will always reward 1 person. It will most likely be easier with 20/30/50 people, rewards being player based, no matter what rewards are added it will always reward the zerg.

Pretty much sums up my post! Maybe not for people dying, but there is a lot that can be done to promote player skill vs. mindlessly following a commander/blob/train to ‘achieve’ the meta. As discussed elsewhere, more tracking for useful merits that promote good WvW meta versus bad meta like ‘jumping puzzles’.

I asked my server/guild what they thought about the rewards and people that didn’t get a key or got a key and don’t wvw often= good rewards. People that live for wvw spent hours n hours playing said bad rewards. I think the rewards are crap myself. It was like someone at anet got lazy.

I agree with CEDWYN ! Many players like to do WvW. not spvp not tournies not pve(mostly..) .

One night , after a whole month with enemies that had zergs over 40 people while our server got abandomed fro 99% of WvW guilds, i had the luck to be in a jerg that could kill others zergs.. that night im sure i looted over 100 poeple. Thats many for a calm night cheeling in wvw with a thief… i didnt make over 50s where in pve when i force myself to farm things i get 1g in 10 minutes from looting just 5-8 champions in frostgorge…

i like the video that was made with the taxis! " No Grinding at all" it was the point i closed the video … When i have to farm nods like bot or chase the zerg around frostgorge (while losing many of the champions cause not all have the money to buy SSD) How is that not grinding ? …

The WvW needs surely some BUFF on the time spent inside while DOING things.. Sorry but when i see that to fully gear my main i’ll need more than 3 months while ONLY grinding champions or nods surely doesnt make me to want to play the game more! Yes we love living story and the new content , but leaving some Basic things so behind its not helping anyone nor you to make us want to play this game nor us to enjoy our free time!

Actually, the achievement were pretty easy to get if you just played along with the other players. It was a lot of work and a lot harder to get than most PvE living story installments. I started late and got most of the stuff done in a little over 2 and a half weeks of pretty extreme playing of 4-12 hours a day. The hardest to do was the merc camps, yaks and sentrys. Yaks and Sentrys because I’m slow and by the time I get there in a zerg the yaks are dead, the Sentrys were better because you didn’t need to actually kill them just get in the circle. The merc camps was the worst you had to figure out how to do them then every time one turned gray you had to stop everything you were doing and go kill a destroyer or harpie. Which is kitten the group playing as you have a different goal. The rest I just went with the zergs did what the commanders asked and eventually I got them. Getting into the EB was challenging at times. But I would get into line then go to whatever battlefield was available and either zerg if there was one available there or just work on yaks and sentrys.

Achievements are going to be a fact of life in GW2. Better get used to it. I like it because it gives me goals. It focuses me on doing a progression of things to get what I want.

I personally think they should have given you a piece of ascended armor in the chest. I got 9 level 80 toons one piece of armor is not gonna break the back of the loot system. But If you give out a piece of ascended in WvW the PvE players are going to want one too. Mark my words. The Dungeon Runners and Fractal Fanatics are going to get on the band wagon and want the same thing. And then the Living story players are gonna want in on the loot too.

Maybe they should just give everyone a nice Christmas Present for taking part in the game and playing and making it a nice place to play in.

The only people that think WvW rewards were a failure are the ones with the ludicrous idea that WvW rewards should be on the same level as their favorite PvE grind fest in terms of time spent. Sorry it doesn’t work like that, considering before we got nothing before seasons. I appreciated my mini and the 9 level tomes I got, and will continue playing WvW for the same reasons I did before seasons to have fun and to win.

Yea other dont play from when the game got out and we arent fully geared like you and not in the server you are! When in my server my guild is the only big guild that makes zergs in our wvw maps , while being a PvX guild! You can imagine that its not that easy to finish the WvW season 1 achievements! While we all went for it, only 10-15 of us got it and putting myself out of it cause i wasnt playing that much this month, cause except from games we have more serious things to do in life! And yet the problem is that i dont want to go after nominders zergs chasing champions or nods! i want to be in WvW and roam stealthy and to be rewarded for what i do for my server! Yet i got nothing for the whole month except from these blues few greens and [Spikes] ……… Nothing said about the achievements! But was also something that should be in WvW from long ago.. And Btw Fractals runners and dungeon runners i think they get something after ending the dungeon! Same in living story! So the selfish comments “i got what i wanted , so i’m fine and you are stupid that you didn’t get anything” can keep themselfs out of it .. And yes! WvW should have the same level of PvE average rewards.. Cause a full 4-5 hours of WvW wont give you the loot of 4-5 champions or world bosses that can be done in less than 20-30 min the most!
