I feel it should be more… engaging…

Before the auto upgrades, people hanged around the structures upgrading. People planned on which upgrades to go for first and in which order. People cared about the structures they were upgrading and built various sieges to defend it. It’s almost like a play style in WvW in itself…

Now, it’s just take it and forget it, since it’ll upgrade itself eventually anyways.

It felt good to successfully upgrade your structures under the old system. But at the same time, it promoted a lot of siege wars 2 gameplay, which quite a large percentage of players seem to disagree with. IE: Yak’s Bend name being thrown around whenever someone mentions the words “Arrow Cart”

What you talking about? Current upgrade system supports way more siege wars… With all the invulnerable walls/gates, gate/walls take reduced damage, mortars doing so much more damage than they used to, etc… Current upgrade system is garbage complete garbage. Old upgrade system allowed people to choose what upgrades to go for and it required supplies to upgrade keep which was part of gameplay. Current upgrade system doesnt require supplies to upgrade and all the supplies that gets into keep is used for siege and siege is OP.

Everyone that preferred and argued for manual upgrading was overruled in favor of hassle free. Some said it would free up the time of those that babysat keeps so they could join the zerg. Now, it is the opinion of many that zergs and their size are out of hand. Scouts and babysitters either joined the zerg, found another outlet of engagement or left.

Personally, I left at first, then briefly (within the first 6 months of HOT) argued that we should have free will to manually upgrade atleast a camp.

Now, AUs and everything else HOT have been in place for almost 2 years and arguing against them at this point IS fruitless.

First, because I’m not even sure there’s anyone left that would know how to or even bother to do it.

Second, giving free will upgrades to an individual or server won’t keep the objective from flipping and it won’t make the server care more about defending it, same as always you’ll have 1 or a group of individuals that watched as their time and money vanished in the blink of an eye.

Lastly, the amount of upgrade trolling if the system were reverted would most likely reach an all time high. We’ve forgotten about when someone stepped AFK right before planning to go for WP upgrade and someone else came in and hit gates or guards or some other path that was not planned by the person that had been watching and escorting yaks for 4 hours prior to stepping away for a phone call.

Are AUs better? Depends on your playstyle, be it as it may, the majority still prefer set it and forget it. Can you continue to live with AUs never going away? Depends on if you’ve found something else in wvw to keep you engaged enough to stay.

It is what it is, the only reason I’ve given up the argument is that now, it’s nice to not have to split supply between upgrades and seige. There’s less free will, but more flexibility. The only thing you have to worry about now, if you do build defensive seige is whether or not someone will be there to refresh it. It is what it is, but it’s never going to revert back to what it was.

I agree it won’t ever go back to what it was. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t change from what it is.

The old system had the flaws pointed out above and was quite unpopular with some people. There was considerable enthusiasm for moving to an automated system. The problem is, the automated system we got has also proved unpopular with some people and also has obvious flaws.

In an MMO which has a stated, intended lifespan of at least a decade we shouldn’t be expecting to sit with the flawed replacement for a flawed system for the next five years. If not before, these systems and many others should all be reviewed and revamped in the upcoming expansion. Yes, I know the WvW revamp that came with HoT was a disaster but that again shouldn’t mean no revamp next time – it should mean lessons learned and a better revamp.

There needs to be more automation than the old system and more failsafes against trolling but there also needs to be more player agency than the new system. How about a system where there’s an automatic upgrade path but players can speed it up or enhance it by actions they take directly? That way there is no obligation on individuals to act but they have power to act if they wish.

I think people forget the fact that in order for this “free” upgrade to happen you have to keep the camps running! Similar to before, but before it depended on the amount of supplies in the keep and who wanted to dish out the silver and gold for the upgrades.

Now you fight to keep the camps running and get your upgrades that way. It’s so easy to halt an enemy upgrade just by roamers taking the camps over and over again. It happens a lot. So now you get OUT of the keep and have a bit more fun than just sitting in and zzzzz then spending more gold.

Yes, if nobody is on because everyone is sleeping you get the auto-upgrades more quickly etc etc. We see a lot more T3 keeps now than before I think .. maybe .. But isn’t WvW more about the battles, in and out of the structures than it is the poor little guy that sits in there for hours babysitting and trying to get the upgrades in the order that someone wants without being screamed at.. even though it was HIS gold that paid for the upgrades?

Frankly I think this system that we have now is much better overall.

True, but there are people out there willing to do it. I think it’s up to anet to help promote upgrading.

And I’m not talking massive guild requirements and time frames. I’m talking about a player who shows dedication on their own.

Create an AP, reward of gold, and sup siege bundle. I would think that would be attractive to a player. AP rewards some ascended back piece that is unique. It could be a freaking trebuchet back piece art or something. Or several pieces…GASPPPPPP ANET.

I’m with ya! Something needs to be given to promote and reward the few that are willing to take on the mundane job of watching a keep. They are really special and any team is lucky to have them. I say that not because I do it often but because I am happy when I have others watching over the other keeps so I don’t have to try to keep them all up! Which I have done more than once.

I spend most of my time roaming, but coming across a player showing that much dedication hits a soft spot. They really are a diamond on servers, yet are not given the love. I would ask servers start throwing gold at these individuals for their time spent.

Current system is better, imo. I used to spend tonnes of gold and lots of time zooming from place to place to keep upgrades going, etc.

Now I don’t have to, and can just spend the time looking for fights and responding to white swords.

Seems like win to me.

I don’t even think we should bring back spending gold for upgrades. Maybe badges/supplies/tokens or anything. More customisation on when/what to upgrade, and let us manually upgrade it. So its not just take it and forget about it

I don’t miss the old upgrade system at all. You’re still dependent on keeping your camps alive, if they constantly flip back and forth that will slow down upgrading a lot. And as an (ex)roamer, mostly in enemy bl’s the only upgrades I ever used was the caravan guards to empty out supply cheaply before the enemy took it back, and to add 1-2 more grunts to pester poor home-bl defenders.

And with all the griefing and drama I saw in mapchat over who dared to this or that upgrade etc, combined with all the gold costs and such, I don’t miss it one bit.

instead of sitting in a keep, the dedicated can escort dollies and hold camps. not all that glorifying always but can get A LOT of nice skirmishes trying to hold camps that can be a lot of fun. I don’t miss the old system at all.

I have no problem with auto upgrades of keep etc.

I have problem that they do not “despawn” like sieges , especially SMC, should be like sieges if you take smc, you need to take care of it , other wise it will despawned and goes down in tier.

good idea, mine to help low population server, if you take smc you look after it, you don’t get to hold it and bully the rest of the server because they don’t have enough players to take over it.

You don’t hear anyone ranting in map chat about who ordered the wrong upgrade.

You rarely hear anyone complaining about taking supply.

To minimize the time for upgrades you used to have one or two players to speed workers, one to refresh siege, two to speed yaks. The old system was a clear advantage for the rich and overstacked servers.

the automatic dolly upgrade is ok, not perfect but ok.

The thing lacking is manual interaction once it is time for an upgrade and some player choose to “personalize” an objective.

IMO it should be done in an incredibly simple manner – just copy the trait system straight up. When a keep is at 20/20 dollys, it wont progress untill someone pick up/middle/down. For example, up give +40% door strength, middle give +20% wall strength and down give mortars. You can only pick one. Then at 40/40, you get the next set of options. Cannons are up, twice the guard strength middle and +20% supply capacity down. At 80/80 – Waypoint is up, fortified walls is middle and fortified doors is down. This is just random examples I came up with in 10m.

Not only would this heavily nerf current fortified and sieged objectives (do you focus on covering every fortified wall cataspot with siege? Then your doors will be a weakpoint), it would mean we have an impact on how the autoupgrades progress. It would involve us in objectives again and make them more than just automatic PPT.

And before anyone kitten and moan about trolling, you cant have a good system thats not open toward the end user in some manner. This apply to everything in the game. Of course guilds should be able to lock it for important objectives, like with tactivators. A guild wont upgrade or is trolling? Unlock it automatically after 3 more dollys at capacity or something, problem solved.
