Zerg Guilds
If you want tactics and strategy then you’ll need to join a WvWvW guild. The reason you don’t see strategy and communication is because its too cumbersome to do via map chat, it is generally done on TS/Vent/Mumble.
It doesn’t really matter if you are casual, I’m sure there are guilds that will take you in wherever you are.
If anything a side just zerging around is pretty easy to avoid. Remember this is supposed to be war, which is mostly about managing large numbers. Any kitten can zerg in a group, but it takes commanders to lead that zerg to actually do something.
Granted it may just be your server, but I usually see two (or three) zergs fighting mindlessly at a bridge most of the time until a smaller force takes some camps and then starts a siege somewhere. Eventually people trickle in off of the zerg to this new attack and then the hivemind figures it out and you get one of those epic Keep battles you’re talking about.

They should of merged WvW with PvE instead of having dumb static towers/keeps that you don’t give two hoots about, that way PvE would be worth playing instead of falling asleep at your keyboard and the outmanned buff wouldn’t be so one sided on a care bear PvE/bot server.

Even that is minimal outside your guild. Sure it happens, but no guild plays 24/7/365.
With the loss of the Orbs, defense is even less important than it was before… which was barely minimal to begin with. Besides WP and the point value in a keep- there’s really no long term value in holding anything.
Seriously- folks wait until right before the ‘tick’ to take objectives… and abandon them right after.
Anet needs to increase the reward in some way… Karma bonus for keeps, XP for supply camps, influence for towers… as an example… the longer you hold it.. the more you earn of it by defending.
When Defense becomes more important than the moment- the next ‘tick’… then strategy will return to the game and pitched battles will become more common… more noteworthy than they are now.
Just for the record:
zerg = uncoordinated or loosely coordinated blob of players who use their numbers to defeat enemy/capture points and doing this without strategy
Coordinated group of players (mostly a guild team) with strategic purpose and tactical fighting is NOT a zerg, even they are ~20 players. These groups usually use some voice communication, rarely the chat, so from outside it could seem as a zerg but it is not.
If u zerg over points and dont put sieges or upgrade it, u will simple giving the enemy 5 minutes to gather and zerg ur points away. Even a non upgraded tower with lots of sieges can put a kitten whole zerg down. Problem of today, not many ppl care about upgrading or sieging what we have, so u just giving ur enemy a free transport to more points. The better upgraded and sieged a tower/keep is, the harder it is for them to take it.
Zerg needs to know when to pull off and come defend. U need to keep what u conquer cause lots of ppl are not here for the karma and xp. Zerg needs to know that by defending u get karma, and silvers and xp too. Stop conquering if ur losing ur main buildings.
I remember i lost a T3 tower QL, cause zerg was trying to take durious back. Now, a full upgraded tower with sieges and no manpower wont work too. Priorities must be set and every single 1 of us must learn what are our priorities.
A zerg can be used in many ways, make use of ur manpower the best u can
