decided to make one pure WvW character.....
Depending on which tier you’re on… If you’re on a fairly populated tier, I’d recommend you play a staff elementalist as it’ll allow you to stay back and tag everything in sight while remaining fairly safe. On a lower tier, I’d probably say guardian as they’re fairly versatile and will allow you to roam or be part of a group without having to change up too many things, despite being pretty melee focused.

You don’t have the expansion? I totally recommend that you get it. Most of the elite specs are awesome in wvw, both zerking (big fights) and roaming.
You are right about your engineer dream. Its not actually that great in practice. The big fights are mostly about 5 professions nowadays: Guardian/Dragonhunter, Herald, Elementalist/Tempest, Necro/Reaper and the Chronomancer.
Guardians are used for melee/support role, they often run Soldier’s gear and use shouts and virtues to support allies. I consider the dragonhunter specialization a great update on the old basic support build, but there are those who use the old build too.
Revenants are used as “glass cannons” that run hammer and spam their powerful ranged skills.
Necromancers are used for the “well bomb”, a 600 range AoE that can destroy any opponents that get caught in it. Nowadays they can also engage on melee range with their new reaper shroud. Builds are often glass cannon.
Elementalist do mighty good damage with their long range spells and also support by dropping waterfields that heal nicely when you use a blast finisher on them. Staff elementalists often play on glass cannon build too.
Chronomancers use their spell “veil” to give stealth for the entire team for few seconds. They also have their new tech: “Gravity Well” that can totally destroy any opponents caught in it.
Make revenant and use hammer 2. Staff ele is total kitten compared hammer 2.

Any class, as long as you have access to speed for your character (passive 25% movement or prolonged swiftness uptime). There can be a lot of running to as much as away from, so prioritize speed. Play a class you enjoy playing already, so engineer is fine. If you like to play support, then you need to join a group to play with regularly, so the need of your support character might change. I suggest that should be your priority before diving into wvw.
You can’t be wrong with hammer 2 rev.
edit: or a necro. Spam condi, profit. But hammer 2 rev is the king of the garbage hill.
But I have no clue what character should be it.
I was thinking Engineer more because I can set up defensive turrets or summon a mortar. But sadly I have a feeling the image in my head of how cool that will be is not aligned with the reality of the game.
So I guest I am looking for advice on how best to do a WvW only character and some pros and cons of the various classes. I tend to play more of a support role in rpgs so probably nothing front line.Sadly I do not have the expansion yet so any of the new stuff is out.
Do not get the expansion. Especially if you’re only getting it for WvW. The game mode is pretty much dead and won’t last much longer. Plus, do you really want to support their new P2W model?
Also, you might want to try out some WvW before leveling up a new character. The fact that you think defensive turrets are helpful indicates your idea of WvW might not be aligned with how WvW is played.

There are so many other threads for you to post your opinions in. He asked for help for a build not your opinions on the state of the game or the xpac
There has been a very helpful thread recently. Probably the best thread I’ve read in a long time here

Thanks to you we only get 1 of those threads as this is now probably going to turn into an opinion thread..
Guardians are always welcome in zergs. Not so good for roaming or skirmish though as they have virtually no escape.
Necros are very strong in zergs right now. Also not good in roaming or skirmish as they also lack escape.
Mesmers are the king poop of roaming and skirmish and probably the strongest non-Elite in the game in this role. They also have great utility in zergs with portals, time warp, stealth, etc. A lot of players don’t like their play style though.
Engineers suck. Seriously they suck at just about everything. Scrappers are currently awesome but that requires the expansion.
Thieves… don’t bother unless you have wicked fast reflexes, are willing to run away from a lot of fights and have virtually no use in large scale fighting.
Warriors… they are in a bad spot right now. Avoid.
The Elementalist is probably the most versatile class but has a high difficulty curve in roaming and skirmish. In zergs and large group play the Staff ele has great DPS, great group healing and decent escape. In small fight settings, the Celementalist (D/D with Celestial gear) is still strong. Not as strong as some of the Elites but still strong.
Rangers… ughhh… they are below average IMO. They don’t have much to offer in large scale fights. They aren’t great at roaming since they are easy kills up close. They are pretty decent at skirmish if they are in the right group. They are a pain in the kitten with the Druid elite from the expansion but otherwise I would avoid.

My post is more useful to him than the ones telling him to play revenant, considering he said he doesn’t have HoT.
Dont’ do it, save time, effort, money and u won’t be disappointed

Guardians have plenty of escape through their invulnerabilities. Time your skills right and you can cleanse off all the soft CC and blink+leap to safety. Especially on lower tiers where playing a medi guard in a zerg is actually half viable (2 medi 1 shout for stability).
