i check contested areas but that sometimes doesnt work out

EB is usually the most populated, other than that you can just stick to one of the commanders. Find a WvW guild perhaps?

Shocking Shorty-Asura Tempest | Magnificent Mike-Troll Warrior | Lockpick Louie- Human Daredevil
Fabio Feline- Charr DH | Viktor Virtuoso-Norn Reaper | Pocket Prestige-Asura Chrono
Killer Kasserole-Plant Druid | Frankie Feline-Cat Scrapper | Felix Feline-Charr Herald

Well it depends how your server is going on what map the fights will be at, but you can work it out by having a look at all four maps. Lets assume you’re blue for the purpose of this discussion.

Go into say EB, check the map – if there is not a single blue thing on the whole map, chances are you have little to no allies there. Being a newer player, you probably don’t solo camps/npc villages yet, so its probably best then to head to your borderlands. If there is a camp blue way off in an enemy third, its probably a solo/small team, and again you are probably better off letting them do their thing. A blue tower might mean people are retaking stuff, but it could also mean the enemy are finishing off your team for the night, so you should be careful. If you own the keep, a camp or two and some towers, you’re probably good to play there.

If you went back to your borderlands, have a look at where the ‘front’ is. Enemies tend to take things moving up the map – so if say green is pushing, the bottom camps and towers will be green, maybe hills and/or bay. This lets you draw a straight line across the map of where your team is probably fighting – if you still have both keeps, your team is probably defending those and the supply camps north of them, or even pushing out of the keeps into the enemy area. If you’ve lost the keeps, your northern two towers or garrison are probably under attack, or being pushed out of.

Of course, you can simply look for the commander icon and run to it, that’s what most people tend to do, and especially as a new player its probably your best option.

80 DPS War / 80 DPS Ranger / 80 Support Guard
Blacktalon

Follow around a commander (guy with the blue dorito over his head), look at map chat, or just run to the orange swords on the map

Warrior
Necromancer
Fort Aspenwood

as for the commander icon i generally look for that, but to me it seems there a “max distance” from where allies “green dots” will be shown on the map or mini map….for example last night i was following a zerg….i died and respawned at the begining of the eternal battlegrounds map (bottom left-ish) . i went back to where we were but they had moved on and i spent a good 20 minutes or so trying to find them, then gave up…map chat on my server is not active/non existant when i have tried to WvW
