help with a decent build for a ranged caster
Without armor and rune and sigil choices, it’s not a build.
You might also soon realise that your damage in shroud isn’t ranged to any extent and hence reapers aren’t actually that ranged.
Staff ele can be played as ranged but if built properly can be in melee range a lot of the time to benefit the front line from your staff water 1 healing.
For both positioning is key, listening on ts and making sure you hit when and where the comm calls (or be brilliant at positioning and reading the situation- usually if you have been a command and understand zerg mechanics).
I’d give you my builds for both but mine are non- meta non-standard that work for me. Others have tried them and fail miserably because they can’t read the situation or the group or realise what the real strengths are.
I’m frequently in water for almost the entire battle and almost certainly in water for SM battles where spamming water 1 saves lives!!
As a main monk or mes from Guild Wars I’m totally used to watching HP bars in group and on the battlefield and applying heals at the right time- there might be 20+ in the group but a well targeted water field will keep that small selection of people with low HP alive and prevent your zerg from falling down.
Necro will get more loot than water ele (at least mine does).
You can build a necro offensively without suffering too much, your ele should be built with more survival in mind- you’re zero use if a thief can down you (and you will be targeted).
Can you add your gear and stats to the build? You need to select “WvW mode” on the top right of the build editor to do so.
Failing that, is your gear power-based or condition damage-based? Wells are best suited to a power build, whereas your weapons and the Curses line are more befitting condi gear.
Thank you for your answers
I dont have the gear yet but i think i will go for viper with vampirism runes for the necro.
I’ve restarted to play the game after 2-3 years of pause and just brought the update 2 days ago.
I’m just looking for advice on what’s decent to use in the skils and specialization for a ranged necro.
Now I understand that necro’s are better as melee so I’ll probably try to develop the elementalist.
I’ve tried all and until now the necro and ele I found the best for my style of play (ranged).
Ofcousrse I’m on TS and I listen to commander.
I want to play WvW in zergs and i don’t like close combat.
What would you recommend?
I have a necro, ele, mesmer and rangerLately I’ve played the necro based on staff and well’s.
I’ve liked that because I ca put down all those AoE from the distance. This is my current build, but maybe you can help me to make it better:

I recommend you hop onto your friendly server TS and talk to people. You may find that there is no such thing as backline or frontline, or that they are looking for something specific like a power reaper for pushes in shroud, or a full corruption necro/reaper.
On ele front aura share healing, cleansing is very strong, but again its not necessarily a backline or frontline build and staff as main weapon is often a poor choice nowadays. it has its situational place, but other choices are better and used in far more situations.
On ranger, ugh sorry, outside of roaming you are pretty much useless. A healing druid, that can and does keep up with frontline and heals it, is somewhat useful, though eles are still better because they bring so much more to the table despite having arguably lower heal numbers.
You will see people come in here and say “you’re wrong cuz you can do this or you can do that” but the thing is, all those things are already covered + cleanses + boons + stab by other classes.
So consider that. 1st find some people to hang out with, and heres a tip: if a group you end up in gets 1 pushed while having roughly even numbers and constantly runs away instead of fighting, dump it, go find a different group.
