Is it really worth it for anyone say under lvl 65 go into WvW? I know we all scale to lvl 80 but from what I am experiencing at lvl 35 is that the gear does make or break you in either the PVE or PVP portions of the events.

not really, unless your part of a big zerg and only needed to carry supply you will have a very frustrating time. The stats on level 80 exotics and level 80 weapons make your damage output ridiculous compared to upleveled characters.

It is worth it. When I create my characters, I go to WvW to level, especially during resets when there are huge zergs running about. The loot will suck, and your damage won’t be great (don’t expect to win any large battles), but you’ll be in a zerg and you’ll be relatively safe. Don’t do any heroics or risk taking or soloing and you should be fine.

I play wvw with multiple <80 chars…
As soon as a character hits lev 10 and has 2 utility slots, he’s good to go. YOu just have to stick with a group till your char is about lev 35 and got his first big set of rares(Trading post)
from that point, it doesn’t matter much anymore(At least for my guardian, it didn’t matter at all)

Thief: sb and s/p.
reasoning: SB is another escape mechanism with infiltrators arrow. That’s all, it is good for at low levs but it does great in that regard. The true machines are infiltrators strike and pistol whip. Your job is not to kill stuff, it’s pinning down escaping opponents. You cannot kill stuff by yourself, let the group dish out the damage, you focus on controlling the flow of battle, dazing people trying to stomp your allies etc. Use blinding powder to save downed allies and scorpion wire to pull people to your group. Your group will thank you.

Guardian:
Start off with GS+scepter+offhand(doesn’t really matter, get what you feel comfortable with) your bread and butter skill are the GS pull and scepter immobilize… Also Smite against downed players and siege. From 35+, you can also play hammer, don’t advise playing hammer before that point. As for utilities, there is a lot. Save yourselves is great, purging flames awesome, retreat amazing… And that’s not even counting the countless knockdowns and immobilizes, you can get as utility.

Ele:
Contrary to popular belief, do NOT play staff. The true beauty of the ele is dagger/dagger, no matter the level.
All staff does is pumping out some negligible damage(as you are underleveled) on a long rage with ok AoE(no traits yet) with the only true cc being on lightning attune.
Just get dd and play it similar to an underleveled thief. find the right targets, RTL, updraft, attune to another element and lay down some burst and/or cripple.
As for utility, mist form is a must.

Warrior:
No personal experience here but while I played my guardian, my mate played a warrior. Just get any weapon with good cc and/or a long bow for the big flame field.
Grab as many banners as possible and forcefully thrust them into the ground. Your group/zerg will thank you.

Necro: No personal experience here, Staff, necrotic grasp and some defensive utility, I presume

Engi: No extensive personal experience here. This one is tricky. Grenades, rifle, net turret I guess?

Mesmer: Chaos Storm and Null field are awesome, no matter your level. Also, temporal curtain is amazing.

Ranger: Well, Rangers suck, end of the story.

Is it worth it? Depends on what your goal is.

I made a habit of taking my low level toons into WvWvW often. I died a lot. My goal was to learn about WvWvW. Which I did. I found that even at low level I could and did contribute.

Some things to do if you’re a low level in WvWvW:

Run supplies: take from supply depots (never the towers) and build stuff, repair stuff. This is a task that almost always needs to be done. You get exp for repairing walls, gates etc. You get exp for building siege weapons.

Small encounters: I spent time attacking the road sentries. Even at low level I could kill those pretty easily. Kill the sentry, control the point. You helped your team.

Escort dolyaks: Boring, many players don’t like to do it. Unless the opposing teams are targeting your yaks you should be safe and even if they are targeting them you are likely going to be just 1v1. Even if you get owned you can sound the alarm that the supply lines are being cut.

Play defense: This was my favorite part. Get into a tower that is likely to be attacked. Get up on the walls and pull out your AoEs and long range attacks. Pick off attackers without putting yourself at too much risk. Learn to use arrow carts, cannons, trebs, oil. You don’t have to be a level 80 to man a siege weapon and pound the bejesus out of the opposition.

Know that you are likely to die a lot. You’re going to lose money on your repair bill.

Have fun

naphack has it right – you won’t be a great damage dealer but low levels can be very useful supporters, just chose the right skills for that. And your level doesn’t matter for using siege and carrying supplies. Just don’t forget to upgrade your gear every few levels, it makes quite a difference, especially for your hp.

I would say, it is worth it. If you want to learn your class, being on the weaker side for a bit will make you more aware of your dangers. And make you grow as a character.

Then once you hit 80 and exotic, you know how to compete and what your own weaknesses will most likely be!

If you want to xp, follow a capping group/zerg. Lots of xp, and lots of fun usually!

I only go to WvW for experience on my alts if I go in there with them and PvE got too boring. There seriously is no reason besides that to play WvW since you won’t get kills.

Definately worth it. I level my characters almost exclusively with WvW. Get into a zerg, get into a party, and the EXP comes flowing in.

First, you’re going to be a lot weaker. Get used to that.

Whether it’s worth it depends how much you like PvE. I also level in WvW because it’s more fun than PvE. It’s slower though.

Worth it to level, yes.

Worth it for your server, no. You are useless until lvl 30, and at that, you aren’t very useful except for supply.

If your in a good zerg and your capping like crazy you will level like mad. make sure no matter what you try to hit everything your zerg is attacking.

If your server is sucking, then stick to PVE.

Khronus:
Does that mean you do not play with scouts or need people to operate defense sieges..?
Reidlos: it makes sense. Absolutely. Aside the fact, that you start to learn about WvW pretty soon and will not have to learn the basics (like: what does the map look like) when you are fully competetive. Just get yourself a headset and listen to what’s goin’ on in the TS.
Plus: I have seen more than enough lvl 80 chars in WvW who were totally useless for the team, so don’t worry and do not let others disencourage you. Go for it.

Iv had no trouble having fun being lower level when i leveled up. The system is good enough

It is totally worth it to me. Every character I have is below level 15. So I use my characters to scout, report back to the commanders the direction they are heading, head count. Plus repairs are really cheap. (I love getting killed due to the fact I lay there, and find out what they plan to do next, if they tag and bag a supply camp then run off, thats vital information for our servermates to know)
