no incentive to play WvW
In my opinion, it’s because of the “No one left behind” and “Everyone should be equal” mentality everyone seems to abide into.
If they give great WvW rewards, casual players would complain about unfairness and that they would have to go play a mode they don’t like or it’s too hard for them, or just about any sort of valid excuse they could give to bring everyone down to their level.
Not that it’s wrong, it’s just that pandering to the most common denominator will give out a mediocre product – hence the state of WVW now.
What? Didn’t you notice that WvW does provide server-wide buffs? No? You and 80% of the rest of the playing population!

Don’t WvW if you are looking for loot. You’ll be perpetually poor.
Try EU servers if you want the server pride thing.
NA has really kittened itself with stacking, so every week is the same match. Outside of T1, EU players have been smart, and spread themselves out, so there’s a new match almost every week. NA should really consider doing that, I know a few have tried.
I think most people do WvW these days simply to fight other people.

I do because it’s something I enjoy but it’s also what I have time to do so WvW and some spvp is basically my game world. When there are commanders who move and the other servers are pushing their weight around also than I get plenty of loot that will leave some gold the next day for me after salvaging and some pretty good open field fights. There are times however when it feels like it takes all night to gather people around one tag only to run to nearest keep, get wiped because we’re all stupid, and that’s the last thing to happen all night so you only end up with like two things to salvage to cover repair costs. So, you really do need to go into WvW for the fights and teamwork when it happens.

Unfortunately, 3 weeks into WvW, I’ve concluded that, at least on my server, no one really cares about WvW….no one actually cares if our borderlands is completely taken by another server, because it doesn’t effect them in any way.
Most people do not care to any real extent, because for the vast majority of matchups “winning” is pretty meaningless, and not because of insufficient rewards or incentive, but because “winning” in most matchups boils down to differences in off-peak coverage and mindless PvDoor, there may be a scoreboard and a “winner”, but as a competitive event it is just a worthless joke.
Even solo roaming has declined terribly, at least in t2. Used to be you could go out and encounter other solo roamers frequently and have some great fights 1v1, 1v2 etc. But now I never see less than 2 roamers. My higher skill level solo roam friends have either left the game or are on the edge of leaving because of errors with input/animation/lag on the game’s end or the ever increasing incentive for players to ball up into a wad for every type of play. It’s become a game mode of dodging zergs and flipping pve objectives.
I used to be really passionate about wvw but constantly being in the same matchups in a mode that is basically just a really stripped down pve (I can’t even turn my graphics up to enjoy the scenery, so everything looks like potato) where I get run over by groups of 3-60 for several hours has worn real thin. If I don’t have a friend to roam with there’s barely any point.
I play in a zerg sometimes too but I feel sorry for all the guilds that worked hard to be strong zerg busters with teamwork now having to trade hammer train for pirate ship due to stability strip. That was some of the most fun I’d had in wvw and it’s badly disadvantageous now.
There’s dozens of reasons that wvw has grown gray and weak. It’s a shame because it is the true end game content and has kept me playing this game over a year longer than I would have otherwise.
