Q:

I wanted to know your thoughts for what your server does to maintain stability in terms of
1. consistent wvw player base
2. server loyalty and pride
3. good and active guilds
This list of course is not exhaustive,
secondly, I was also curious on what you all have personally done to contribute to your servers success.

I’m not convinced that it is simply due to your servers overall consistency in winning, although the type of community and reputation

Thirdly, with the arrival of leagues, random matchups, and the ability to transfer to other servers for free or for a low cost, what are the factors keeping you in your server or motivating you to transfer from your server?

Honest answer?

Our stability comes from our player base being in Tier 8 for an entire year, getting roflstomped week after week and only winning 2 matches in the first 10 1/2 months of WvW. Because of this we are pretty anti-bandwagon/fairweather compared to a lot of other servers.

Everyone that stuck through those long months are not going anywhere, and form the rock-solid core of the community we have today.

Then, as servers above us began crumbling, we ate up the crumbs like starving badgers and started pulling off some wins. A few of our guilds successfully used this momentum as a rally flag and through incentives and good old fashioned peer pressure were able to convert a lot of our server’s PvE players into WvW. Training sessions and a re-organization of Teamspeak are getting our new recruits up to speed quickly and breeding new generations of effective commanders.

We still have a long way to go but down on FC the journey itself is far more rewarding than simple wins.

P.S. I’m not aware of too many people who have transferred away from our server, but of the ones I do know of 1/2 of them came right back within 2 weeks.

I don’t really think there’s much any individual can do to maintain their server’s stability, they’re made up of thousands of people. Everyone will have a different idea of what will improve the server and I don’t really see how you can convince them all to follow whatever bright idea you have.

Anyway, for Maguuma I think a couple of things have kept us in roughly the same position for quite a while now. First and foremost is not bothering with recruitment, because after all if someone is willing to transfer once they’ll probably be willing to do so again. Often with good reason, it’s natural when recruiting to paint a rather rosy picture of your server which can lead to transfers becoming disillusioned with the reality of it once they arrive.

Secondly Mag has always had a terrible night presence, which I think has actually helped us remain stable because most win-focused players would rather not see all their hard work undone while they sleep. This makes a bandwagon forming much less likely. Also since we’re used to seeing everything wiped out overnight by servers with better coverage, Mag players tend to view the scoring system with a considerable amount of disdain. So streaks of wins or losses don’t really have that much of an effect on morale.

I’m slightly worried about the leagues though, as we’re in a bit of a catch-22. If we end up in silver, a lot of our organized NA guilds will probably get quite bored outnumbering basically every other server in the league during that time slot and might consider transferring to rank 5/6 simply to have something to do. On the other hand, if we’re in gold then what little oceanic presence we have and also our more casual players might transfer or quit entirely because getting spawn camped for 7 weeks straight is just too depressing for them. That’s all just speculation on my part though, and I imagine everyone would probably return after the season is over either way.

The biggest social factor on our server is probably Teamspeak, which is amusing because it’s not actually part of GW2.

Because we are able to communicate vital information fast, give each other encouragement and even have a joke or two, we have a really pleasant social atmosphere in WvW.

From what I notice on SoR.
Generally there isn’t a pressure to WvW even on active nights, most of our commanders might make a gripe, but they understand there is more to to GW2 than WvW. I tink SoR discourage over-coverage of time zones (AKA don’t play too late into OCX time if you are a NA player). While it’s great to try and have as much participation as possible, it’s better to not burn your players out, dispite a lot of bragging about how much someone plays WvW exclusively, I believe that population is in a huge minority and those players can keep the fort down.
