removing mug critical hit still makes thiefs in www too strong as due to www environment they can stay perma invisible and cloak delay from 4 to3 second was a mistake as it actualy make fight against them results in certain death as well with ability to finish in stealth
conditions removal and healing in stealth with ability go to stealth and hit from stealth without any penalizations as they can cloak within second with heavy dmg makes them extremely hard to kill even with several experienced players as they can fully regenerate in few seconds because stealth remove agression from them

To be honest I find Blind is a better ability to use on a downed person pre-finisher as you can still be hit in stealth, knockdown ect but you cannot be if they’re blind and miss their downed abilities though when you think about it Ele’s have the best ability to down you without you being able to fight back by using Mist Form to become Invulnerable.

I know a lot about thieves it was my firs char i played hundreds hours with that class but later other classes became more interesting to me
so yes i was serious about it
i was not talking about eles mist form or engineer ability to finish without being interrupted but both abilities have long cd but thief can stay permanently in stealth as in www they stealth penalizations expires almost immediately as they become visible to other player ..
many thief players will start whining that I’m trolling because the actual situation helps them to get easy kills without any challenge as there is no current option to remove their stealth except ac 5 unlock which is useless

I feel like the thief class is fine balance wise.

That being said, it’s not very fun to fight a thief. At best it’s tedious. I dunno, it just isn’t a gameplay design that I like to fight against, or play as.

Many dev’s acknowledge this and keep clear of stealth mechanisms in mmo’s.Anet…think this is not the case and stealth is perfectly fine,although i can kill thiefs with ease at times.I do not like stealth mechanisms in an mmo,simply because it’s a bad design always being abused somehow.For now i have other things to worry about that may end up me quitting this game all together, instead of worrying about thiefs.

Most of the thief balancing nerfs have been applied in SPvP only. This is why the wvw roaming thief seems very strong at times. They hit harder and they are revealed for a shorter period compared to sPvP thieves.

The new anti -stealth fields may be the devs way of balancing stealth while remaining under the non-sPVP ruleset by utilising wvw specific items/skills.

Do you think we’re OP? Roll a thief and let’s see if we are really OP as you say. People in wvwvw die because of thieves because EVERY thief is built for dueling and 1v1 while 80% of the wvwvw people are built for group fights. In fact in sPvP we are the most “meh” class after warriors.

What if AN had simply designed a distinct “aura” or effect of some kind that would have instantly notified a person who paid even a little attention that they were under the effect of confusion, and then if they had even half a brain they’d know that they needed to cleanse it? Nope. Apparently that wouldn’t have been dumbing things down enough for the care-bears AN is catering to.

What if he rolls Thief and realizes it’s even more OP than he thought originally?

L2P and all that nonsense aside, I would also recommend that everyone that hates Thieves roll one.

At worst, you’ll learn new things about the class and the playstyle so you are better prepared to counter it, even if you end up thinking it’s not so OP. At best, you’ll realize it’s horribly broken and revel in the free loot bags and no repair costs.

In my own personal perspective, I haven’t even really bothered too much with my other toons in WvW after I got my Thief to 80. Less money wasted on repairs and trolling others is way too much fun. It’s also pretty handy to save your friends’ backsides when they get are getting butchered by a Thief. You can come from Shadow Refuge like Batman, one hit down the Thief and save your friend. Best fun I’ve had in WvW.

hmm yeah maybe if the would make the purple cloud bigger around an enemies head would be a good thing. people wouldn’t fail to notice that they are confused. if new players would have understood the mechanics of confusion, we would have never been nerfed like this.i hope anet reconsiders…as for thieves i feel they are strong and permastealth can be annoying, but the good theives out there that don’t rely on stealth only, would get hit hard with a nerf and it would be pretty unfair for them too.

i’d rather see buffs and fixes(as almost every class still is plagued by bugs) than nerfs. also i feel spvp and wvw should not be treated as the same as in wvw a lot of spvpbuilds are not viable at al and a ton of wvw builds are useless in spvp.

I will just say fighting thief is a waste of time unless you want to. But usually they chase you and don’t let you go because they think they can own you and usually they do own you at the end if you choose to fight. XD

There are too many times I go get my poi/visa with my low level in the WvW map and suddenly some thief came out of nowhere and murdered me at those non tatical locations, ie the 3 skill points in the BL. This won’t happen to other class because I’d have stayed away when I see them.

You feel the hostility and you don’t want to hang around there, but they just don’t let you go. In fact, the thief class is designed so good that the dedicated thief players fit perfectly into the role.

The class is just a tool. It’s the people who play it decides its role. You can make it a dark evil character who does its assassin things. Or it can be a support who save lives using the stealth out of a nasty situation.

I just hope those who enjoy the assassin part don’t over extend themselves into real life. Even though a video game is designed to let people experience things that real life cannot, there is a tendency that many real life crimes are commited because the people learn too much and apply it from TV/movie/games. Just a reminder. :P

They’re not the “Golden Child,” they are just not very good in competitive SPvP.

The design philosophy for a while was to have performance in all parts of the game as similar as possible, and we’re still feeling the effects of that philosophy in class balance in WvW and PvE.

Until the shift is fully made to clearly separate PvP balance from the rest of the game, you’ll see things like the recent Thief changes.

Or, until like Thieves, all classes have viable low skill-cap builds. But it looks like separating is easier than complete revamps of half the classes.

Thought I would comment on this, since I did roll a thief to see how the other half live, I main a warrior since launch and use it for commanding, my thief who is now lvl60 just rarely ever dies, I die more on my warrior in 1 hour than I have the entire time in wvw on my thief and I don’t even have to invest in defensive gear or traits. If 3 people catch me alone on my warrior im dead, I might as well just go afk and let them kill me. On my thief I can see a 100 people and no that there is nothing they can do.

I have 4 ways to stealth and crazy run speed, The reveal stealth traps don’t seem much worry to me, as I know I can just spam dodge roll or dagger storm on the trap and then press one of my 4 stealths to be gone again.

The only thing that’s so far not impressive is the damage the thief does, I’ll have to wait till 80 to have a fair opinion on that.

Do they need a nerf shrug just know that the ability to never die unless you do something very stupid makes this class very appealing compared to others.

Totally agree, the thief game mechanic is broken. Unable to target them for large parts of a fight, too much mobility, too much DPS. It’s a horror story, it really is.

From a melee prospective, it’s even worse, you rely on AoE.

Yes, I have played thief (level 80). They are great, just the stealth is overkill.

Thieves… they’re a bunch of criminals.

^ I can kill them the fastest out of all the classes. they are fine. you see a red circle on the ground with a house above it, AOE that area. i dropped a few GC thiefs in 3 or so hits as a bunker guard. my uplevel mesmer can kill them just fine at lvl 30. i hate saying this but this is a learn to play against thiefs

Thieves are not all powerful in WvWvW, but there is no denying the latest patch made them overly popular. And there has always been lots of thieves in WvWvW. When the culling was broken, I often called it Thief Wars 2, because sometimes I could e.g. see 5 people on our side, each and every one being thieves. How is that for a game balance?

Of course you can beat thieves in combat, but most people agree: fighting against them is no fun. But can you kill a really good thief? Fighting them is extremely annoying as they remain visible very short amount of time and dodge while visible or keep teleporting short range. Many duo thief teams can achieve almost permanent invisibility, which in my honest opinion should be fixed.

Thieves still enjoy the advantage of being the best roaming profession and best professions to prey upon the flanks of a fleeing enemy group. They can snipe dolyaks, venture deep behind enemy lines, snipe the tail of an fleeing zerg and initiate combat against solo roamers without much any risk at all. In worst scenario they can always enter stealth, shadowstep and then heartseeker spam/infiltrator’s arrow teleport away. This allows thieves to run glass cannon builds, which would not be that viable with other professions. Low risk, high reward <— a clear sign some balancing should be done.

Few things should be changed:
- Revert the revealed back to 4 seconds in WvWvW. 3 seconds is too short considering the size of the map and chaotic nature of the combat. Besides thieves in WvWvW have much easier time entering stealth than in pvp setting. They rarely ever get knocked out of shadow refuge and they can use whatever forest animal etc. to grant stealth with cloak & dagger (it is much easier to land C&D on an animal or NPC than a human player who tries to avoid that).
- Currently sword #2 (infiltrator’s strike/shadow return) allows unlimited range teleport. This basically can give the thief a superbly powerful way to get out of combat or do the supply runs faster than any other profession. This should be reduced to max 1200 range.
- Reduce the amount of stealth you can get from combo fields. Thieves have the best blast finishers in the game: clusterbomb. Black powder + clustercomb = area stealth. Combine that with right mix of traits e.g. patience —> perma stealth. Fix: reduce the amount of how many seconds of stealth you can get from smoke field into half.
- Larcenous strike is a bit too good at the moment. Either increase its initiative cost or make is steal only 1 boon.
- Stealth stomp should not work. This should of course affect all professions e.g. mesmers and engineers also denied of doing stealth stomps.

Note that I am NOT suggesting these game balancing changes to other forms of the game, only WvWvW.

I actually rolled a thief and they are redicilously easy class to play compared to my warrior. But got to agree, most thieves are pretty useless in group fights. They are mostly build for solo fights.

I hate perma stealth thou, and they can teleport so far. So I hate to fight them. So I just made my warrior tanky so a thief hates to fight me. If they are persistent, I wait till they use daggerstorm, than it is really easy to kill them. But those are the nuby thiefs unfortunatly, I can’t kill the good ones, I just ignore them.

You’re obviously in a zerg or fighting poor thieves. The ones I’ve seen have managed to perma-stealth, only coming out of the shadows after they double hit for 18k, before disappearing again. Only using the red circle as a last resort.

Almost any class should be able to handle most thieves in WvW. I play all 8 classes and can 1v1 any class with any other. Last night I dueled with a thief on my warrior and had a necro interrupt half way. I downed the thief, /bowed and cleansed those 100 conditions on me and left with 70% health. This is one of those l2p posts. If you have problem with a class you should probably look into your own gameplay instead of QQ. Similar attitudes made mesmers become least demanded. No, no, no.

1) Most downed skills are crap anyway…they only prolong the inevitable.
2) HS barely ever does that much damage
3) Landing C&D in the first place is a chore

As others have said…a well played thief (few and far between) is only going to be effective on 1vs1 or if very well played 1vs2-4.

Think of the number of times you have been ganked by a super thief compared to the number of other encounters you’ve had in wvw. I’m guessing it’s a fraction of a %.

I don’t have an opinion on this since I don’t consider it an issue at all. If it was nerfed I can’t say I would give it a second thought.

It’s a little too early to judge this skill. What we’re seeing is a brand new toy in an environment that has been pretty static for almost 8 months, so it is enjoying overwhelming usage and players are having to adapt to a new dynamic. I would give it at least a month before we can see if it truly needs to be changed.

It’s hard to gauge the effect this would have without “real world” implementation, but my initial thought it that this would only promote the zerging mentality; it’s already hard enough to get a stomp off before 3-4 players revive the guy you just downed. Reviving while stealthed/invul/etc would probably have to be looked at to maintain balance.

Heh, stealth stomps are the least of your worries. You can be ground target CCed or downed mid stomp animation, even if stealthed.

Distortion stomps on the other hand are totally unstoppable. You either have a downed teleport/stealth or you dead.

Tele stomps are harder to deal with than stealth (i.e. portal/shadowstep). Blind (on reaction) stomps are safer than stealth. Depending on what player is downed, sometimes stability stomp is more useful as it blocks aoe interrupt.

its a game they know how to play…
You just say:“hey see? people says thief is weak in PvP….BUFF WWW!!!!” (they actually did that and got replied from devs they are sorry but in www thieves are already “strong” but they will try).

Then proceed to “see that class is broken in PvP!!!! nerf it in WWW” and devs do that adding nerfs to PvE just in case….

A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

I agree with OP. I think all initiative skills should cost 16 base initiative, and if you use a combo field, you go to half hp.

yes people try to solo thiefs in what they do best, even if atacker is not built for wvw support has i believe most arent,1vs1 is were thief masters so its common to loose there.

Most anoying class is thief with cloak n’hit redundancy with alot of condicions, but for raw damage i always took slower but heavy damage from warriors, both are good atm.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

yeah agreed. the last nerfs were terrible for soo many for us. my mesmer build got hit sooo hard that i can’t use it anymore and i do not wish such a thing for ANY class. i feel bad for anyone who has to change their entire gear because a nerf. yes every class has something that is super strong, but they also have weaknesses vs other stuff.
a perma stealth thief will maybe run away a lot and is great to gank people, but in the middle of a zerg its different for him too.
our mesmer glamour build that got nerfed to kitten was strong vs zergs that spam buttons, but we had no other attacks than that ..our auto attacks would hit for 213…and those huuuuge cooldowns….plus yeah we could down a lot if we caught them by surprise but finishing them off took forever!
i’m tired of people calling for nerfs and dev’s listening to QQ’ers.

They had few that was removed from the game …..

You make a thief, invest the time to play it to 80, get him/her good gear, take them into WvW, actually learn how difficult it is to even perform a successful backstab (seriously, it takes practice cause it’s more than a single button press), and then not cry when any Warrior insta-kills you with a hold followed by 100-blades that takes like 14k health (which guess what, is usually well more than your entire 10k-14k average thief health depending on just how glass you are).

Now i know that the usual answer from thief players is they had to see/expect/mind read/predict and stuff.

That is one of the issues….

You can see the warrior coming and you can at least play.

Something you cnnot do against a profession that has:
BURST
STEALTH

P.S. i find somehow fun how now that all thef posts asking for nerfs destroyed any counterbuild you see so many thief saying “hey no more nerfs!!!!”

Seems in order to match other nerfs they need more instead….

thiefs are pretty fine in wvw, i’ve seen much variaty now, altough on the mug “balance” if thief already have full health it could give random boon IMO or more 1sec stealh by chance.

and yes thiefs are the best ones to 1vs1, probably some builds arent great for that and require more like a group play, while solowers might have problems when fighthing in group due spike

Are you going to take away mist form stomp from eles, tiny stomp from engineers, stability stomps from guardian, warrior, mesmer, elementalist, and ranger as well? Or are you just hating on thieves, who can be stopped from stomping you while theyre invisible, meanwhile all these other classes cant be stopped.

There’s so many holes in BS threads like this, you guys should really just learn your class, learn every other class, and play what you like to play. There’s a counter to your class that can kill you pretty easily no matter what you roll, as this game uses rock, paper, scissors balancing. But hey, if you guys hate this game so much, Neverwinter just came out, go play that. Oh but watch yourself, theres no such thing as revealed or even coming out of stealth when you attack others there, so in PVP thieves just roll you without you ever seeing them.

This makes me LOL. Thieves are good for 2 things in WvW: Picking off out of place noobs and killing yaks.

The current WvW meta is zerg warfare. Warriors, eles, and guards are the classes to be at the moment.

Everytime someone says “nerf thieves”, i hear thieves saying: “run a thief”, “learn to play”, “we are already sooo nerfed” etc, etc.

I am a thief (i made one out of pure curiosity 2 months ago and started playing it due to its op’ness) – not on my main char – but i guess i know a lot about this class and i totally understand people who complain about us.

Issue no1:
Stealth is always op, in every mmo.
But perma-stealth like we know in GW2 isn’t op, it’s god mode in 1vs1.
I play WvW only and honestly, killing people 1vs1 is almost too easy, which brings me to issue no2:
Thief is the only class i play – my others are ranger, engineer and warrior – that doesn’t suffer consequences from a glass cannon build. They simply don’t need tons of toughness and vitality, because they can always stealth, heal, run away, whatever. I use full berserker with limited hp and unlike on my other chars i don’t see any cons.
The player i fight is too strong? Too experienced? No problem, i stealth and run away.
The group is too big? No problem, stealth, run away.
Hp is getting low? No problem, stealth, run away.
Wanna get into a tower under siege? No problem, stealth, get inside.
I could multiply examples.

I guess most thiefes who play that class from the beginning have some kind of god-complex. They want have everything. Absurd crit dmg, stealth, mobility – it’s not enough, they want be immortal.

The funniest thing is – i’m not even a good thief. I’m a better ranger and warrior, but still i get most kills as a thief. Irony or … what?

I downed a good non-glassy thief in 1v1 combat in WvW last night. I play a guardian. It was a 5-minute battle, mostly due to the fact that after he realized I was carrying two melee weapons, he would use Black Powder every time I got close to keep me from doing much damage (dat blind!). Eventually, I wised up to his movements, used GS5 to yank him out of Shadow Refuge at the last second to prevent a long-duration stealth, and managed to down him before he could completely recover. We then both /bowed out and went on our separate ways. The glassy thieves are generally even easier to kill; you can pound them into the dirt with one mighty blow and/or whirling wrath before they get a chance to respond.

The day before that, I took on two roaming thieves and nearly killed both. A third showed up, so I started to back off, but an ally came to my aid, surprised and killed one thief, and together we demolished the remaining two.

There are ways to counter thieves, but some classes have them in more abundance than others, and if I wasn’t fairly durable with high healing potential, some of his burst would have assuredly killed me—so I made sure to have some durability in my build, along with CC and a bit of healing power. In short, thieves excel in killing people that aren’t prepared for them. The trick is to know how to fight them, know what counters your class has, and be prepared to use them at the drop of a hat. Thieves tend to get so used to killing unprepared enemies that they often don’t respond effectively to someone being prepared for them—this lets you get the upper hand, if only for a few seconds. It’s as much a psychological war as anything.

In my opinion the overall issue with thieves, and why we continue to see these kinds of threads, is that they are extremely good at killing bad players as the skill cap for fighting a thief is higher then that of playing the basic thief.

Nothing about WvW encourages people to play better. No incentive to learn their class or to learn other classes. The vast majority of the players in WvW spend most of their night following a taco, stacking when told, blasting and dropping combo fields when told, running gear and abilities they were told to run.

Their play is dismal and it creates an environment where even bad thieves can be successful.
