This game is already over 8 months old and it truly amazes me that the developers haven’t addressed this problem, which has generated more complaints than anything else!

Tell me what you want from developers ? Problem will probably not be in the game itself but in your skill.

I will tell you what I want:

1. Better communication with the WvWvW player base
- so far they have only have couple of SotG with couple of top tpvp players, playing (not surprising): mesmer, elementalist and thief
- but not State of the Game monthly with WvWvW players, even when this has been suggested in these forums
- there has a lot of good (but also bad) ideas in these forums and extremely little feedback from the developers
- Anet doesn’t have an open test server and generally doesn’t tell in advance about their upcoming changes
- game balance is almost solely set based on tpvp, which is very different from WvWvW and pve

2. How to fix stealth:
(notice this would affect stealth for all profession)
- let it function exactly like it is, except the stealthed player remains semi-transparent
- in other words no changes to stealth, except enemy can see them semi-transparent
- you won’t still be able to use targeting skills, but it would be easier to land AoE instead of guessing where that stealthed player vanished (I know some bad thieves are under that shadow refuge, but good ones aren’t and note this would affect ALL professions).

3. How to balance thief
- slightly reduce some of the burst skills, which are already a bit too good e.g. heartseeker (it does too much damage for homing gap-closer, which can be spammed. I don’t mean a big nerf, like 15%)
- sword #2 (shadow return) shouldn’t have infinite teleport range, limit that to 1200 range
- larcenous strike should steal just one boon and maybe put a cap on the time limit of those boons, now e.g. thief can steal 5+ minute stability from NPC (this is obviously too good)
- make venoms a bit more effective and better traits to share them with allies (= more team utility to thieves)
- cooldown for traps in pve and WvWvW should be reduced from 30 s to 20-25 s.

My idea is to make thief more versatile instead of a one-trick burst and stealth profession. Discuss.

I am not sure I like the idea of semi-stealth, unless that is for once into combat or so, even then, not sure what I think about it. As for “balancing” I don’t agree with any of the dmg reduction, I think it is fine, and would even be willing to take a buff in dmg or health if they changed how stealth worked or how often it can be used in combat. I think the dmg they put out is the least of the worry, and hitting stealth/dmg and others is to much at once. Fix the stealth problem and see how it changes everything and go from there.

I don’t know why people are so in a knot over BP + HS combo for stealth, that combo costs 9 initiative, out of the standard 12. Outside of traits that means the thief is left with little options until some initiative regens (sure some will regen during stealth, but only 3 if they wait the full duration). So while the thief gets stealth it is at a high cost, and has some counters. I’d argue the real stealth skills issues are C&D (easy enough to land, and low cost) and how shadow stepping works while stealthed. I’d say that changing C&D to require a hit in back to gain stealth would add a lot more balance to the skill (maybe add 2 more stacks of vulnerability from the attack to add a little balance to the new difficulty) and shadow stepping while stealthed should break stealth. As it is the shadowstep utility skill and steal (without mug) will allow you to shadowstep while stealthed and leave the enemy unaware of this. The most incredible disengage combo is SR, then with the 10 sec of stealth Shadowstep 1200 units away and continue running while stealthed. This means you can easily make it 2500 units in distance without any indication to your opponent, and can do so in any direction.

(I play a thief but generally don’t use stealth much, trickery cond damage all the way, but I’ve run SR and Shadowstep, and have never encountered a time where a player could catch me, there’s really little they can do about it)

Doing that requires a high level of skill. Not all of us Thieves are skilled ya know. So buffing the Thief class would help to balance things out people like me who doesn’t know how to play correctly.

dude… they just stood there most of the time and took it, and the thief did next to no damage by just using C&D, sure he pestered them well… but little was actually done. Also that mesmer had to be the worst thing I’ve ever seen… being picked on with 1/4 health – “maybe if I just stand here he wont notice me”….

I think the thief needs to be re-balanced as a whole for WvW. The thing is, they are pretty much sitting ducks if they aren’t in stealth, yet if they come out of stealth to attack you, it’s pretty much game over, even those invested highly into toughness and vitality. It’s like the extreme in either direction.

I think they should be given more natural HP and toughness, then have their stealth adjusted appropriately. They, at the very least, need to have an effect where if any attack is made they cannot stealth for say 10 seconds, and get rid of the regeneration upon stealth.

I don’t know, the way they’ve got it set up is quite stupid. I saw a thief solo against 6 others in WvW because they couldn’t not touch them as they were constantly stealthing in and out. It shouldn’t be like that, that needs to change.

Basically rebalance them so they are a little more effective in group situations and less effective in 1v1 situations.

I think anyone who does not realize that the Thief class has the best anti-personnel abilities in the game is either fooling themselves or simply clueless.

The reality tho is that Anet can’t “balance” them without nerfing the everliving kitten out of them.

I much perfer my mesmer for solo or guard for group. They bring far more along with them than my thief does. Solo both can take on a thief (or multiple baddy thieves) and laugh.

What is annoying are the ones who do not know how to play and use stealth as a fight reset over and over because they started losing. Come in for a kill and find out its not working out of them…Reset (stealth), recover make new plan restart fight, start losing again, reset, start over and over and over until they get lucky or I make a mistake in the 8th fight with the same person in about 5mins. It is to forgiving to bad players, someone else try the same thing and fail, they will have a long walk back from a WP to try again, but not a thief, they can reset the fight just about anytime they feel like it.

This is probably the main issue people have with WvW thieves and constantly available stealth as well as the greatest mobility.

You really cant ever kill them unless they make a mistake and overcommit themselves. Considering theres loot/badges and now also wxp at stake this seems unfair to every other class that doesnt have either of these options.

We will see if the anti stealth fields are effective, all though it sounds like they may only be good for choke points and wont effect open field much.

Personally I think that all the existing sPVP balance tweaks should be applied into wvw, and then look at whether further changes are needed at all.

I escape/outrun other players/zergs on my guard, mes, eng with ease on a daily basis as well. Thieves can do it easier though, yes. That’s part of their class design.

WvW isn’t centered around you getting 2 more loot bags. Sorry.

WvW and tPvP are totally different types of PvP which need to be balanced separately. To just copy + paste it all over is pretty fail.

Thieves are the biggest joke in the game right now, People really need to L2P if they can’t beat a thief 1v1 100% of the time.

Seems like 99% of Aurora Glade, Riverside, Far Shiverpeaks and Millers need to L2P because of my thief. Yet same time it seems that I need to L2P as well. Interesting!

Mesmer & thief punish players who don’t understand their classes the most. WvW has a lot of new players.

Thief is also easier to play than most other classes at low skill levels. At higher skill levels thief falls behind. That’s why you don’t see many thieves in high tPvP teams.

It’s similar to the noob tube in COD 4… you see people complain about it all the time, but no one uses it in tournaments because there are more powerful tools around. It’s designed that way on purpose.

LOL, I have heard this before, and will again, normally by the same people I have to revive 5 min later.

Sorry, but if you really think that an equally skilled and geared thief won’t own you, you are way too over confident. and while I am sure if you fight a Thief on your terms, you might be able to take them, the truth is, if they are letting you fight them on your terms, they are not a well skilled thief.

My Thief has less kills because I don’t like to zerg with her (obviously less than my Staff Elementalist). In small roaming situations, I have a far, far higher rate of killing than any of my other lv 80s (Guardian, Mesmer.etc) because the Thief has one thing they don’t have – being able to chase down anyone while never dying myself.

And to the poster directly above(edit: 2 above), there have been many instances where I recognized that the enemy player was more skilled, so I cut my losses and ran away. Something like that is not as simple to do on a Guardian. With the Thief, all I need to do is stealth, and unless they have an incredibly fast reaction time and can use a knockdown the moment I pop black powder, I will get away over 90% of the time. (And if that combo fails I just press Blinding Powder, or HiS, or Shadow Refuge, or just use Infiltrator’s Arrow because it’s not bad either)

The reason that sPvP doesn’t see a large number of Thieves is because stealth stops point capping. How many times do I have to say this before people understand? WvW is not the same as sPvP, and what makes you ‘win’ is different. It’s not because somehow Thieves are a crappy class. (Edit: Also the D/P permastealth stack-crit-damage-to-win build that I use doesn’t work there, because crit damage is capped)

I hope you’re kidding me… guards and mesmers have many great tools to fight a thief with… seriously… a healway guard can almost afk and kill a thief… same with a retal x2 bunker mesmer (using idefender and illusions have retaliation). There are many types of targets that a thief will be VERY hard pressed to win against.

@ Sunflowers.1729 it stops capping in WvW as well. Your server winning in WvW isn’t dictated by how many randoms you can kill. It’s still about capping.

To be honest, two equally skilled, and geared players, the Thief has the edge due to the abilities of their class. The ability to disengage from the fight at will, being able to do extremely high burst DPS, combined with a barrage of stealth and other tricks, just gives them more means to do more damage faster with less risk to themselves.

But like I said, you can’t really bring a thief on par to any other class without totally nerfing them to oblivion.

That was an average thief. He could have stomped the commander by using shadow step to avoid the aoes. That said, he is, in fact, op as the “zerg” ball were/are mindless/clueless (at the end of the video the thief was standing right in the center of them and still manages to get away) and therefore out classed. To the video’s author, well done dude. Next time hit “F” to start the stomp, shadow step away then just prior to finishing stomp, return.

why not just make it that the thief can stay in stealth until they have engaged combat.Once combat is engaged they cannot pop back into stealth to hide and regen.

seams fair since when my necro is in combat I cannot run to get any distance from the thief yet they can pop them selves out of my target range in an instant to heal and be in stealth

WvW and tPvP are totally different types of PvP which need to be balanced separately. To just copy + paste it all over is pretty fail.

Guard? Really? You can disengage and get away from zergs/players that are on you easy? If by chance you are lucky to get a head start, you are still wide open when backing off and can still be chased down if they want, thief is not the case, however, it is not about them running away, it is the resets, getting out of the fight just long enough to have everything off CD and healed back up. You say it’s not about the loot bags etc and by them running off for a few seconds shows we won, so we don’t need loot bags, but the thief gets them, also, rather than the down sides of losing like everyone else, they don’t have to WP and walk back or have repair costs, they get all the plus and none of the negative of being a poor player, and as such it is far to forgiving to bad players in that they will still almost never die, sure, they almost never kill me, but being able to finish them is very hard to do because of all the ways out they have, and as such, you put a good player in the seat and you might as well give up, as you will not last long.

We have, and L2P is getting old, if you don’t have points to add, please don’t bother, the people in here that have a problem with perm stealth give points on why its bad and how to fix it, but the people who are trying to defend it and bash anyone who wants a fix can only say L2P without anything to back up their side. We are not asking for a “nerf” we are asking for a fix, I don’t think perm stealth was something they wanted in the game, and I even suggested giving them a dmg or health boost to make up for just a small stealth fix and no one who wants the fix even disagreed with it, which to me shows how OPed everyone sees perm stealth to be.

for everyone that say’s they can down good thieves 1 v 1 with ease, please do show us the video? Otherwise, it’s thieves trying to steal the message of the thread.

I agree, a bad thief I can start winning the fight pretty fast, but down them? That can be hard 1vs1, they just reset the fight before I get them down. And a skilled player on a thief almost never happens unless they have a big screw up, super forgiving class, burst dmg and perm stealth and a player of the same skill level? Yeah, not going to happen.

You can down a good Thief, good Mesmer, good Warrior, etc. It’s all about skill. If your opponent has more skill than you, it won’t be easy.

I have more skill than most of the ones I have come across, and I don’t even see myself as a good player, they are just that bad, but getting them finished is hard to do because of all the ways out they have, again, I could win 90% of the fights if there was a way to just keep them in it, the ability to reset and wear you down over and over is what is OPed and annoying.

Yeah ummm…. thiefs have killed me a couple times, and I do not posses the required brain power to counter a thief. So, nerf please?

I will say it again, we are talking about stealth and resets they have, most people I have seen on thieves are easy, but finishing is very hard to do because of the forgiving nature of the class. And we are talking about even adding buffs to the class, everyone needs to stop crying about nerfing and start looking at a broken part of the game, I can not see them meaning to have almost perm stealth on any class.

@ TinkTinkPOOF.9201 As guard I run monk’s focus when roaming (JI) and runes of the pack (20% swiftness uptime increase, 5% to gain swiftness when hit), retreat, 1h sword. Use random mobs to tele onto and you can get away with ease.

Normally if you put a good distance between you and them quickly they won’t even bother. If they do… well then GOOD. Just wasted a groups time chasing after me and they may or may not catch me. It’s pretty rare when they are able to kill me before I can hoof it back to a group or inside a tower/keep/camp.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about thiefs. Can I beat them? Most of the time. Do I feel like an idiot wildly slashing the air in front of me and dodging after 3s? Hell yeah. Is that fun? Not really.

Also I always liked the idea of making them ever so slighty visible when stealthed. Much less visible than you see a friendly stealthed person obviously but like a slight shimmering in the air which you can only see when you’re really paying attention. Note that I don’t think it should be easy, just possible.

I don’t know what effect the stealth reveal traps will offer, but until then I will continue to hate (enemy) thieves because of the simple-to-use “run away if things are not going your way” mechanic. Whenever any player enters into stealth it should spark an AoE break in combat. That way I can get my out of combat health regain fast enough and not rely on a 30 sec cool down for a teensy bit of added health to be taken away whenever the thief decides it’s time for (yet) another stealth back stab.
If the thief breaks combat with stealth, why should he be the only one gaining a benefit? I don’t mind if the increase the damage a thief does by 100%, just let’s get a fair face to face fight at least 50% of the time please.

…and it’s not really “stealth”, it’s “vanish”. Stealth is remaining hidden until spotted. Vanish is disappearing into thin air right in the middle of combat with no counter measure.

If you think its alright for a class who can vanish with almost every skill and do major burst dmg like a backstab taking off 50% health on most players then you need your brain checked. The dmg I can understand as long the class itself with that build is squishy, but not combined with stealth skills which can be spammed after each other.

This really kills WvW even more, if being outnumbered was not enough vs a realm like drakkar (DE) who apparently all have a day off just when i randomly have a day off work.

All I’m hearing is “Nerf Thieves because I only know how to hack and slash.”

Word of advice – Some skills can still target a Thief in stealth. Learn to use these certain skills, and you’ll be able to track the movement until they pop out after 4 seconds. Thieves also have a cooldown when attacking from stealth, so they can’t perma-stealth anymore.

This is absolutely right, I don’t think so many ppl can be wrong about thieves. My experience in 1 vs 1 with thieves says that it all depends on luck, not on skill at all, if my critic hit is high enough thief will die in those few seconds of visibility, if not I’ m doomed. This is truly broken.

90% of wvwvw players are bad pvp’ers. there are some players though who play tpvp successfully and then ofc it feels overpowered to lose against them.
this is ofc not thief specific but a good spvp’er with a thief can ‘play’ with his prey. i guess that this feels even more overpowered to the ususal wvwvw’er.
if anet seriously would follow all those complaints (and those ‘whines’ come from new and ignorant players) thieves would be destroyed and the complainings would target another class after that. then there are those posters who start spreading misinformation (you can’t blame them as they are quite new and/or ignorant).

so getting owned by a good pvp’er plus seeing threads with misinformation will let the wvwvw’er see his feelings confirmed (gtting owned by a good player while believing that he is a good pvp’er aswell).

i suggest to do some spvp and train some classes and builds. ofc this won’t help all wvwvw’er as the most of them play on a very low skillcap (and will always stay there) but a small percentage could benefit from this.

here is my thing. i didnt care about thieves when i still had my confusion, as i could use the thief’s button spamming against him.I used to have pretty epic duels with them even though i wouldnt deal direct dmg due to the glam spec. i felt even with them as confusion was a great counter to thieves, but with the nerf amd destruction of confusion and the rebuff of the revealed, madeit very very hard for me to fight them.
I don’t think thieves need major nerfs and do not wish to any other class to have to go through what mesmers had to with last patch, so solution here would be something to counter the permastealth or something to alllow us to still target them.

For your information most people know that and unless you have hyper senses where the thief might be its just a guessing game for the ones trying to hit the thief.

This is joke ? Old WvWvW confusion was broken, you as the engineer apply on target 12 confision during 3 sec.
1355 condition dmg (old confusion 4000 dmg per one action new confusion 2780 dmg).
2050 condition dmg (old confusion 5250 dmg new confusion 3405 dmg)
