Trying to decide if I want to join up/server transfer to t1-2 servers and join a good guild. So was perusing the gw2wvw site and seeing some 1. odd jargon 2. odd expectations. The jargon is expected of course being semi new and all. But some of the expectations, what? They want me to record my play WITH them? Not as a ‘try out’ mind you, but they require recording time to be whilst raiding with them…. uh what?

Curious about, well what the general populace thinks of some of these top guilds and their practices? Is it poisonous un-fun atmosphere? Or more fun than I am thinking? I’m sure a lot of x-team mates are lurking around.

Many of the guilds on gw2wvw are GvG-focused. They require a fair amount of dedication to be put into the guild and into play style.

A good way to analyse what you can do better or what you are doing wrong is to record your play and review it at a later time. This will help take a look at if you are staying on the driver, using your skills at the best times, and not getting trapped in an a enemy bomb. It also allows another look at your opponent’s playstyle. It’s all focused on getting better.

But these are perhaps what should be called “hardcore” guilds. It is entirely possible to find guilds that do not require this but also GvG. There are WvW guilds that do not GvG as well.

Most want you to record gameplay to see how you play. Are you in the proper position do you use the proper skills when the driver calls for it etc. As for poisoning it’s a choice to play with them so no they do what they want and you need to decide if that’s what you would like to do or not.

It depends what you mean by “top” guilds.

Most people interpret “top” as meaning “able to consistently win fights against opponents of equal or greater numbers”. These are the “GvG” guilds and they spend many hours practicing and theory-crafting to get their co-ordination, tactics, builds, etc. perfected. They will want to see footage of your play, because you don’t build an ‘elite’ force by inviting bad players, or players who have no interest in learning and improving and who just wanna tag moar lootz. Sometimes these guilds can be “poisonous” as you put it, because they’re putting alot of effort into being top and emotions can sometimes run high, people rage, but the majority of them aren’t like this. When a group all have the same mindset and enjoy doing the same thing together, it can be fantastic.

However, plenty of other people don’t interpret “top” in this way at all. Instead they interpret “top” as “the ability to conquer and dominate a map”, ie. steamroll through T3 keeps and run over any resistance. There are plenty of guilds besides the ‘GvG’ guilds who are capable of doing this, except rather than doing this by spending many hours training up individual members, instead they achieve this by creating a fun community “party” atmosphere to encourage as many people as possible to come along. Personally I prefer to push myself harder than simply being “one of the blob”, but equally I can see that if you’re a less driven player, or just have less time, these guilds will be alot more enjoyable. And it can’t be denied that they get results. Most servers are carried, score-wise, by the 1-3 ‘community’ guilds on their server, while the GvG guilds may pull off more impressive wins and farm more bags, they usually don’t contribute as much to the score.

So it depends what you mean by “top”. If you’re looking to join a GvG guild, I would recommend you talk to one and get an invite to trial before transferring, because (the top ones at least) won’t just accept anyone. If you’re looking to join a community guild, you can probably find one on any server in T1-3.

There are WvWvW guilds with different styles of play, some prefer the command and conquer aspect of the game with all the siege, massive fights, playing for points etc so those guilds usually have relaxed standards in terms of skill level so they tend to be larger and more open. A lot of the guilds on that site however, are “fight” guilds that focus on GvG and zerg busting and they need precision so they tend to be a bit picky.

The video just streamlines the recruitment process and everyone involved wastes less time. I’m totally fine with it because they’re being upfront with what they want.

You post gameplay footage in order to receive feedback on how you can improve. There is a lot of gameplay knowledge contained within those guilds. Those who have a desire to improve usually do not have issues with having their video reviewed by their guildmates.

if you want to join the “best” guilds in GW2 or any MMO expect some sort of elitism therefore ego, arrogance, rivalry, pretentiousness, pretty much what you would expect from a competitive enviroment.

I thought recording was pretty standard, we fraps a lot of our stuff and go over it, talk about it in guild. This usually leads to discussions on spec/traits/gear etc for our havoc setup.

We are not a GvG guild tho, we focus purely on havoc so i cant really comment on the atmosphere in these 15 man GvG teams.

It’s fun if you can find a guild who are trying their best while having a good atmosphere. Many guilds are just toxic but not all of them, you just have to be there to experience it

Recording is an essential part of helping ppl get better. It helps the guild’s better players to give advice and help you to maximize your class’ potential. If they wouldn’t require that then they might have some bad members who might not be dying but only use their skills for their own benefits while hurting the whole raid by not doing any dmg or holding back their skills like aoe stab for their own survival

For serious business WvW Raid guilds there are a few common rules/conditions that they will put forward.

1. use guild raid builds.
This is because they have defined roles for each class, and the driver needs to trust that you will survive long enough to do as he asks. The builds will also optimize you for
playing frontline/backline style play.

2.Use Voice chat.
Communication, and acting on that communication is what sets REALLY good guilds apart from average guilds. People call out their skills and their cooldowns in order to keep the driver informed. It’s important for the driver to know when water fields, necro wells, warbanners, empowers, stability, static fields, etc. are available.

3. Recording Gameplay
This is a double-edged sword. Some raid guilds will have you record your gameplay for a few reasons. Your ability to receive and act upon criticism of your play speaks to your character, and willingness to improve. Some people are vehemently opposed to recording their gameplay for personal reasons, however you can get extremely good advice out of such recordings. When you understand the theory of zerg fighting, it’s all good and well, however when you record, spend some time away from it and then look at it again later you will see all kinds of things that you can improve on. These include: Wasting dodge rolls, missed CC/DPS rotation, Squirreling, realizing that you forget to actually use Final Thrust (cough warriors cough). That about covers it for generic advice. If you check this link : http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2oic4n/ioj_reset_night_fights/ look for a post by Lootballs, it’s a good example of the kind of advice you can get out of recording your gameplay.
Recording during your raids is to see how well you take direction from the driver. Top guilds are top because they are demanding, their players WANT to be the best and they (the guilds) want people to rise to the occasion.

You wont know enough about the guild until you run with them, you might hear a lot of great things about a guild and how talented and strong they are etc etc, and when actually being in ts and running with them find out they are nothing more then a bunch of elitist aholes.

If you want to transfer up to t1/2 do so because of what the environment offers not because of what guild you can join, every server has great wvw guilds. And if you do, run with different guilds, see how they do things, get in ts see how they treat people, what kind of attitude they have regarding server, militia, etc.

No guild is going to badmouth itself, they will always boast and on those online sites will always post their shining moments on videos, never their wipes. So see for yourself, and again if you want to transfer, do it because of what the wvw environment is like.

I say what needs to be said, get used to it.

realizing that you forget to actually use Final Thrust (cough warriors cough)…

… and every Warrior looks at one another squeamishly pretending they used there’s. Dun dun dun … guilty as charged on many occasions.
