why do people play wvw?
For me personally, I enjoy getting on voice comms with a lot of people and my guild, killing enemy players, taking objectives, fighting for the glory of your server and having a few laughs. To put it simply, it’s the people. If you’re out there solo relying on map chat to know what’s going on and randomly following commanders around you’re probably going to get bored fast. Some may enjoy WvW in this playstyle, and all the power to them, but not me.

I’m glad you (the OP) find WvW dull. That means that you aren’t suited for it and won’t mess it up by joining it … and hopefully won’t find it necessary to post here again.
I wonder how many players who dislike dungeons are tools enough to post on the dungeon forums how dull they find it …
Stormbluff Isle [AoD]
I like it because it is large scale PvP.
It has some issues, without a doubt, but the foundation is great for me. Definitely looking forward to how it grows over time.

Such useless hostility for no reason

A surprising number of PvPers who like to insult every PvE player for being carebears etc and generally insult people who do not agree with themselves
To the original poster, I think a lot of people like WvW because they prefer the challenge of fight players vs fighting AI
I find chess dull, but people still play that …..
It’s [NERF] or nothing!
I like it because it’s the portion of the game that feels exciting to me. Ai bother me, I like unredictability. And really…
it’s the closest thing to GvG I can do (open field ZvZ) … but its just not the same without maps & strats options. I miss GvG, and WvW is the closest to fun it gets for me
Because WvW is the best way to make drama <3

Why WvW? For the victory! Defeat a computer? been doing that since space invaders was released. Build a team, their skills, coordination, equipment, the community and then achieve Victory! Hell yeah I want to see the people on my server roll over the opponent like a plague of locusts. I want to watch small and large teams maneuver across the map in an attempt at total conquest. I want to strive for that conquest against hot blooded cold hearted conniving crafty humans. I want my team to stand like a rock in a river and endure the onslaught of our opponents then roll over their remnants like a raging prairie fire and at the end of the day I want to know the person to the left and right and celebrate a hard earned and glorious victory in … a game.
Because I play to win and the fun is in playing hard.

There’s a chaos in WvW numbers that cannot be reproduced by GW2’s AI system. Aggro ranges mean nothing if a thief decides to stealth or jump through 5 other players to pick you off in the middle of a battle. I get the feeling that WvW’ers like it because of the epic scale of leading armies against each other and having large protracted battles where its almost impossible to tell the outcomes beforehand. Walls and seige change battles in a way that is complex and exciting, and a zerg can be stopped in its tracks by a few savvy defenders. No other game to my knowledge has one game mode that has small scale open world PvP, adventure and exploration, PvE, and large scale cap and hold battles all on the same map. Honestly, I could ask you why you would like anything other than WvW.

Dungeons and other PVE is the same every time you do it. Your only real enemy is yourself.
WvW on the other hand, is different every time I enter it, and my own mistakes arent the only reason it can be challenging, thx to playing against real people, rather than an AI.
Pretty much what Gadzooks said.
I can’t do PvE anymore. No matter how well designed the encounter, how good the story, how challenging the AI, I can’t get past the fact that I’m fighting a computer in a very simple, scripted encounter where my strategic options are basically 0 and nothing I do matters for very long anyway. There’s not enough interesting stuff to think about.
In WvW there’s always interesting stuff to think about. It’s not just a wad of people fighting a wad of people. What else is going on while this is happening? What can we do to change the strategic situation? Should we get out of this zerg and go take the supply camp? Should we try and sneak attack the tower from another side while the zergs fight over here? Do we need to break off and defend something? Should we drop a ballista? Start a golem rush somewhere? Should I setup a pre-emptive defense somewhere?
If you think WvW is boring and predictable I submit that you don’t understand WvW very well.
Granted it could be a lot better — it’s fairly basic as-is — but the strategic options of WvW keep me entertained far beyond what PvE can offer. Although Arenanet throws around the term “living world” a lot, in truth our PvE options are very limited. The scripted events are better than nothing but still pretty far off from “living”. If you play WvW and care about getting and keeping a good server score, there’s a lot of different ways you could go and things you could do to make a difference.

I’ve always wondered. what do you find fun about it? it seems ridiculously uneventful and dull to me.
What do people find fun about racing games? Sports games? JRPG’s? FPS’s?
Not everyone likes the same things and that is completely fine. Even WvW itself is full of people playing or doing different things. Some people like to strategize, others like to roam around solo and stalk the enemy, others love to be on a zerg and stomp whoever crosses their path, and others just like to play sim city with towers camps. While others like to complain at everything the current commander does.

PvP without a time limit….Nuff Said. Also I don’t like the way stat aquisition in SPvP works, I mean why does your amulet count for 90% of your stats? Why not have all the trinkets like in PvP so we can mix and match the stats more? The large scale fights are also something that I’ve never seen in any other game I’ve played before so that’s fun.

As true as Odin’s spear flies,

play on pvp servers of other games long enough and you pve for money aka to be better at pvp. PVE players in guild wars 2 really confuse me.

yeah more or less the same question can be ask “why do you do fractals ?”. it’s repeatative , boring and dull after a while…..

Because of the community and friends made in fighting. It is like the end game dungeon or pve of guildwars 2. You make the story by winning or not winning.

Opposite to you I find PvE so dull, I have two lvl 80 character all lvl through WvW, one of them has 33% map completed while the 2nd toon still sit at 1%.
WvW is like PvE but with awesome AI
Asking between PvE and WvW is like asking are you a buutt or a bo_ob person
I’ve always played wvw 90 percent of my GW2 time but I’ve slowly enjoyed playing in PVE too because the events are just awesome. Reminds me of the first boss monster we kill when we’re level one. EPIC.
Although the only pve i really do if necessary are – story mode and arah dungeon story mode.
I do hope, someday, we have the option to repeat story mode quests or try new ones with the same character. I think this is what this game is lacking.
Always Loyal
Companionship with everyone on my server against a common enemy of equal numbers.

Because PvP > PvE
WvW is basically large scale PvP, it saddens me that its such an underlooked part of the game. Wish anet would care more about it.
It is nearly impossible for a new player to walk into wvw and understand anything that is going on.
Find a blue icon. Follow. /s Can I get a party invite? Ask questions in party when you are confused. Ask if there is a voice program to use to find out what is actually going on.
Wvw has so many ways to play, so many options, but basically you have to enjoy playing against other players first. If you don’t like playing against other players and losing occasionally, wvw is not for you.

I’ve always wondered why do people post threads like this. It seems uninformative and pointless to me.

Why do people run the same dungeons over and over? At least in WvW there’s creativity, variation, morphing and adapting tactics and strategies, etc. PvE seems ridiculously dull and repetitive to me.
To each their own…

You’re doing it wrong. Press #3. Aim. Freeze targets. Press #2. Aim. Make those slowed frozen targets bleed. Press #1. Aim. Continue to punish those frozen, bleeding targets for daring to approach your empty (but point-valued) castle.
Pick an enemy on the opposing team.
Mark , then zerg rush him/her through about 30+ enemies while you kill it.
Repeat indefinitely.
This is incredibly fun if it’s a commander.
I find chess dull, but people still play that …..
Chess is awesome, don’t hate !! Wait this thread is about wvw? I play wvw so I can kill players.. and groups with less players than them. I mostly play to kill players though. I die sometimes too but we wont talk about that.

One thing that I usually found is lost players roaming alone, i believe the OP is one of them, myself i hate how WvWvW is managed and its old alliance battle(now with walls) alike metheod of conquer and run to next while other already caping what was conquered.
What keeps me by doing it all time i log in its the guild.
He probably needs to be in a guild that knows what to do in wvw or in an real active guild?

I enjoy WvW, since you’re doing something for the greater good (the good name of the server you’re on). I mostly roam around solo capturing camps and sentries, but at times I roll up with the zergball and flow around the map, capturing towers and keeps..
Uneventful? Strange remark, I completed my “Emergency Response Hero” achievement mostly by all the events that occur in WvW. Dull? Nothing dull about using your skills to get a camp captured as quickly as possible (before the defending server gets there with some people to check out the crosses on their map).. And of course the combat from time to time (going from mass action rushes on Stonemist castle to simple 1v1, when you encounter another roamer).
Played with my main the entire PvE story, started WvW quite late (at level 70), but haven’t been away from WvW ever since..

You guys need to stop calling Dungeon play player vs AI.
It is NOT players battling an AI.
You are insulting every single modern AI by doing so. It’s basically players rolling against a predetermined script using a random selection of predefined patterns and running on ridiculously overscaled numbers to even pose any challenge.
You could call it players vs big hp bar.
On the other hand, WvW is a fight against the unknown. You won’t know what will happen until you actually got an arrow in your knee/a dagger in your back.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
Not a scripted encounter like PvE
Not a red team blue team halo match like sPvP
Variable gear, unkown enemies (unknown #’s), and a greater sense of adventure
To get 1 achievement point from the daily pve.
I find spvp too much like FPS games with their small maps and capture the flag type scoring. This is an MMORPG and to me that means fighting with many other players in a large open world, weather it is pvp or pve.
Also, I played DAoC for years and loved the realm vs. realm 3 way fights in a huge pvp zone. The main reason I bought this game was because it was the only one that sounded close to that. Of course, this games WvWvW and combat system is a pale comarison to DAoC which saddens me greatly.
Is it the gold? No.
Is it the mature players? No.
Is it the competitive balanced environment? No.
Is it cause of the lack of hackers and cheater? No…
Is it the large sums of karma? …No.
Is it the ability to work for the variety of different gear? ….No….
Is it the frequent, rich, content updates? Heh… no
Is it the highly optimized performance? Nope.
Is it the tactical combat? No…
Wait, why do we play WvW? o.o
I just like to run with the zerg. Nothing more.
I myself is poor pvp player. But when running with zerg, I tend to run support builds and make my zergmate benifit from my build. And when we take down the other zerg, it feels kind of involement of teamwork and that just feels good. Sometimes we get wiped, but we all get wiped and can laugh together about it, which is good too. :P
Why play WvWvW?
Beacause you can play as front line insane DPS or respec and play a support role ‘cause thats what you feel like. You never know what’s going to happen because you are playing against other people, and they can do some crazy stuff!
See you in Tyria.
The only real way to answer this is via a war story.
It was a Sunday and I had just finished my daily. Enormous zergs were in EB, and we were outnumbered, so the guildies decided to switch the front to the IoJ borderland. We activated Siegrazer, and took a tower with no problem. How much time did we have before the zerg came? We pressed up to the SE camp, and built two golems. I was on my mesmer that day, porting golems across the map. We work the golems up to the water entrance for the IoJ garrison, and start bashing doors. We are spotted. Will the zerg come? Down goes the outer gate. Skirmishing takes place up the ramp. We port them up to the inner gate. It goes down, there is some fighting, but the Garrison is ours. We push our luck. To the NE camp we go, we take that, then go to Hills. There is a brief hard fight, but we win and claim Hills. Then it is on to Bay. We cap that, and notice the zerg has arrived. It is not IoJ, it is DH. They pulled guys from EB and were swarming in, capping Garrison. They move to Hills, and we move to take paper doored Garrison. Our golems die, but we get in, and start building siege on the roof of the lords room. We strip the garrison of all resources, have about 6 arrow carts, when the DH zerg comes in.
There is mass fighting in the commander’s room, and we rain hell down on them from above. We are outnumbered but somehow position and siege carries the day and we wipe them. ‘Should we reinforce the doors?’ we ask command who nixes it. Build more siege up top. The doors are wide open and a knot of us dig in on the roof. In comes the legions of DH. They try to go up the ramp, and get mowed down by arrow carts. They die over and over and get rezzed. Our people are being yanked off the roof and somehow make it back up there through the confusion. A guardian from DH bulls past everyone and is on the roof creating havoc, and we down him, repelling another break. I get yanked off the roof again, this time get ground down by the boot of the zerg. In TS as I am running back I hear my guildies go down to the inevitable press of numbers from the DH zerg. WE lose, but we make them pay dearly, buying each of our lives with 2-3 of their own.
As hard as I try, I can not come up with a similar story about completing my daily. This is why I WvW.
