Obsidian Sanctum Campers at Kite [Merged]
You are missing some context here. This morning DB had several people ganking TC and EB going for the kite. As I understand it, someone from TC started it. An unofficial truce was thus broken, and there was a flurry of activity on the matchup thread. But as one wise person said (paraphrased) you can’t blame someone for PvP’ing in a PvP zone.
Also I have 18 of 16 acheivements done, and I still have a few jumping puzzles I haven’t done yet, also the drinking game. What I’m saying is that this kite is not necessary for getting 16/16.
Doing what I can for DB during EU primetime
The problem is that people can camp one of these spots for however long they want. Check the well in this screenshot for example. How is anyone supposed to climb this thing, while there’s a whole bunch of guilds camping at the top, and throwing every aoe they can down on you?
And as far as I know, there is no other way up there. They should add multiple roads, and they should make it so that stealth from the fountain, cannot be broken simply by getting hit. Because they just need to throw some area effects in the well to break anyone’s stealth, and then they pound them into the dirt. Some of these guilds can keep this up all day.

If you can’t get the kite, you can’t get it. Simple as that. This isn’t a freebie. You gotta work for it.
This kite is ridiculous. There were 3 of us from Dragonbrand going up and working together to get the kite and when we made it up to the top we were ganked by 3 people from Tarnished Coast. We were all killed and then they proceeded to jump on our corpses and do other insulting things to us. I decided to wait for someone from Dragonbrand to come by to give me a res, but when someone made it the campers just killed them too. They have been camping there for over an hour now and show no sign of leaving. People just have NO HOPE of completing this meta event when there are campers at the kite… At least just for this event, for one week, everyone should be friendly at this JP. This is ridiculous. I completed what I was supposed to complete and I am literally within feet of the kite, but because someone decided to be a jerk I don’t get to get my Gift of Crystal Quartz? I have 14/16 achievements and am thinking that this is going to be impossible because of campers.
Tell that to the 10+ group of dragonbrand that have been camping the entrance of the puzzle nearly all day. Maybe they should help escort you instead of ganking people as they drop in.

I sincerely hope no one tells you this when you really need something you don’t have in real life.
I suspect Randroids and people with the same kind of mentality actually have a lower propensity to thrive in a healthy society.

I agree with his statement. People today are too entitled. A lot of them remind me of spoiled children. Today’s motto seems to be: If at first you don’t succeed, whine about it until someone makes it easier for you.

Altruism does seem to be in short supply these days. It’s all selfishness, greed, and ‘me me me’. And no, I’m not talking about players wanting the achievement. I’m talking about the ones that are purposefully trying to deny others from theirs. And don’t tell me that’s not happening. It is.

Some are like that. I’ve honestly not gotten that vibe from anyone here, though. Not sure where you’re getting that.

Its not just the whining, these people also seem to be very hostile about defending their sense of entitlement. It truly is mind boggling. I do really hope that devs don’t pay as much attention to them, difficulty and depth of video games has already suffered greatly due to giving these people ground.
I finally see what the joke about “MMO players hate fun” was really referring to. It seems like all it is is chasing some arbitrary numbers with some of these people, rather than actually enjoying the game, or enjoying actual prestige that goes beyond increasing some big abstract number to a larger abstract number.
I just think that they should change that jumping puzzle into a “free for all”. Little backstabbing would make it more interesting.
We had a group of people from TC just going through the puzzle, happily ignoring other people, letting them go about it when a group of dragonbrand jumped our group.
You know, it’s PvP. It sucks, but it happens. In fact, we had dragonbrand camping the end of the puzzle when we tried it. We got enough guys behind us to take them on. I didn’t stay and camp the puzzle after however.
But I can see why people would. By camping the puzzle, you’re letting your own server’s guys get through.
I hate that line. I agree with the first part, but if you’re not a liberal after 30 you still have no heart. Just sayin’.
And such is a matter of perspective. I’m neither a liberal nor conservative. I think both parties have good and bad points. But for politicians, in the end, it’s all one party after the same exact things for the same reasons. Just sayin’. :-)
Too true.

It’s interesting to see how some people act about the WvW Sanctum Kite…compared to the Sanctum Sprint. One group has people that actively prevent people from getting an achievement, while the other has people that try to help others get the achievement/title.
Very interesting.
Got my achi at 5 in the morning. Not a soul was in sight. By then all kiddys were sound asleep in their beds. It was nice having the sanctum all to myself.

And both have tons of people complaining about it! If that isn’t a narrative on the mindset of today’s gamer I don’t know what is.

Not quite.
Sanctum Sprint has those that are actively helping by not finishing even though they could. It doesn’t have any that are seemingly actively preventing others as there is a better reward for first. Very small, though. Not worth it to me.
World vs Kite has those that are actively helping by portalling others up. Also by holding the top and allowing those not of their server to pass by unmolested. It does, however, have those that are actively preventing others from achieving it.
The biggest difference is that those that want to keep others from getting the content can act that way in Obsidian Sanctum and those that want to help can do nothing to stop them. But they can’t stop people from stopping short of the line in Sanctum Sprint.

It’s sad. I really is. It’s like those gamers don’t have hearts or a thread of empathy for others.

It’s only the design of both activities that makes certain player behaviour stand out more.
A helpful player in Obsidian Sanctum might make a Mesmer portal over the chasm to the last segment of the puzzle, or might explain to you how to solve a certain part that you might find difficult. A helpful opposing player basically does nothing but run the puzzle, maybe talk others from their server to not attack anyone, but you can’t see this. Those who only want to intentionally ruin other players’ days on the other hand stand out, which attracts a certain mindset even more; camping choke points, attack from spots and ranges where they can hardly be fought back, ganking in superior numbers, or waiting top stab someone in the back at the worst moment, those are not signs of really skillful play (winning a true fight against an equal or even stronger opponent would be).
On the other hand, in Sanctum Sprint, placing fake boost, dishing out lightning stun etc. is happening all the time, you rarely ever know who actually did it; someone dedicated to ruin your day by placing before you can not do anything that is not happening anyway: run faster, use upgrades more tactically, in other words, their only option is to play very well. The one person who already has the title and let’s someone else finish first really stands out then.
You can find all types of players in both activities, but the very design of them makes different playstyles result in very different behaviour and outcome.
The world will be a better place when people like you are mostly gone. Can’t wait!
By then, of course, you will be among those “old people that’d better die off to make the world a better place”. Funny how no matter the changes, some things in this world always stay the same.

I can understand the frustration that some people get from this achievement. But really, is it so bad? The harder something is to get too, the more satisfaction you get from actually ACHIEVING that very thing.
I got the kite in Obsidium Sanctum yesterday and there was a lot of PvP between Dragonbrand and Tarnished Coast. There was also a particular Engineer from TC who was camping the traps midway and simply kept auto throwing grenades down on the pillars, making it simply impossible to get to him as you were instantly put into combat and unable to make the jump. This was kind of annoying and the reason it took me a few hours in the JP (had a lot of fun though). I even got into a party with another TC engineer who was just trolling people and having some fun (not killing them). I had some cool chats and eventually someone from my world (DB) who was already far higher into the JP jumped down and opened a can of whoop kitten on that engineer, actually throwing him down to his death. After that it was smooth sailing.
Took some time, yet a lot of fun.

Here, let me give you an example of a scenario. You are playing rock paper scissors. Your opponent will win 99 games out of 100. It is not based on whether you select the correct object, but rather whether or not your opponent chooses to make a move. If your opponent moves, you lose no matter what. The only way you can win is if your opponent does not make a move.
This is what this achievement is like if your server is outnumbered. I am constantly outnumbered, and with enemies flooding the jumping puzzle and outnumbering me 10 to 1, the only way I can win this is if the enemies decide not to attack me. That’s it. That’s the only way I can do it. Seriously.
Now, when you win that game of rock paper scissors, do you yell, “YES! My enemy just so happened to not decide to do anything, and by default I succeed!” no. You say, “Woah, that game was rigged!”
I feel great when I achieve a challenge. When i complete a difficult jumping puzzle. This isn’t a challenge. This isn’t a difficult jumping puzzle. The puzzle itself is EASY. The only difficulty here is whether or not my enemy decides they want me to live. They usually don’t.

Well on the same token… the Campers do indeed have it too easy. Any sPvP map or Fortress in WvW that only had 1 possible way of entering it, and no means of sieging it, would have Whine after Whine thrown at it by the very people who tend to defend the Ayn Randish jingoism above. Because…. It’s not competitive spirit. It’s a death trap to make a bunch of bads feel like they’re good at bunkering when in reality their fudge would get pushed in so darn hard in any Balanced map that had multiple ways to assault it. So yes… they’re the hypocrites and wellfare hogs here b/c they’re expecting just keep getting tons of free kills without working for it
By then, of course, you will be among those “old people that’d better die off to make the world a better place”. Funny how no matter the changes, some things in this world always stay the same.
I do hope I will still have the capacity to learn when I’m old. Not everyone is the same. Novel concept, I know!
The problem here is that there are several key spots in this puzzle, that a team can hold FOREVER. It is impossible to pass that point. And some of these guilds camp such a spot all day, just to be annoying and score cheap kills. No matter what army you bring to the well for example (see screenshot I posted earlier), you will all be dead by the time you reach the top. You can’t stealth your way past it either.

(i rofled hard when i read it)
Its a JP not a www map, do u imagine any map more abusable than a JP?
How do they expect people to like www from a map showing exactly the reasons why people do not play www.
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

Well if they can hit you with AoEs, you can hit them back with the same skills.
Still I do not like that choke point and a couple others.

You read it badly. Forcing OCD completionists to subject themselves to open world PvP won’t make them like it. But having some people that didn’t try PvP yet get a hand at it and find they have fun doing it will.
Which is one of the reason there are achievements in the first place : to gently nudge players to try everything a game has to offer.
yeah but they are not trying pvp nor www.
They are just being camped in the most abusable point of a jp by griefers….
That call it as you want is all but a fair fight even compared to that unbalanced thing that is WWW.
I don t even know why they put a JP in WWW that makes no sense.
The only way to push pve players into WWW is maybe monthly kills. that is done right not an abusable JP.

News Flash. That’s not how PvP works.
You never recruit most players into PvP by throwing them to the Wolves.
Every person I met… myself included… who learned to enjoy PvP and was good at it, did so either back in the Early days when the ONLY people you could play against were your Friends over LAN… or were later introduced to it by those same people by being Tutored or lead through it in some kind of Social manner. …the kids who aren’t… well… go play call of duty I guess and just listen to them in the headphones …if you dare. That’s exactly what happens when “PvPers are raised Feral” instead of brought into it in a friendly or informed manner.

I really enjoy WvW but I hate the Obsidian Sanctum, all the more so when you get packs of players camping the choke-points. There are a couple of people in my guild who are very reluctant to try WvW because they think it’s all like that accursed jumping puzzle.
Simple solution would be to make all players “friendly” in the map … while keeping the traps and boulders functioning as normal (maybe controlling a trap makes you attackable by other players for a period of time). That way things become challenging and, dare I say it, tactical … rather than frustrating.

Well if they can hit you with AoEs, you can hit them back with the same skills.
No you can’t. They can throw all their aoe downwards, and you’ll have to run into it all before you can reach an angle where you can target them at all. The problem is that you can’t see them, but they can see you. You also have to platform up all these winding stairs while being hit by aoe, and while zergs charge down the stairs occasionally, before you can even get in range to hit them.
It is hard enough to make all the jumps while being hit and being on fire, and getting feared. How do you fight back as well, while the enemy has the high ground? There is literally no way you’ll get up that well if there is a mob there dedicated to keep you down there.
There needs to be an alternative way to attack these folks.

it’s quite simple to break through people camping the dome.

Except this is not a gentle nudging. It is not only a sledgehammer approach, but also an attempt to get people used to WvW by presenting the experience from the worst possible side.
It’s trying to make someone learn (and like) to swim by throwing him into piranha-infested rapids.
it’s quite simple to break through people camping the dome.
…not if the campers actually know what they are doing.
Edit: correction. Big enough zerg might actually indeed manage that. It would require a truly massive advantage though – the odds are worse than frontally storming a well-defended keep without any siege engines of your own.

I don’t get this whine. Just because there’s achevements in the game, doesn’t mean you’re entitled to them per default, you have to work for them. That’s what achievements are in essence; proof that you have accomplished a certain goal. If you’re not able get to the WvW kite, that’ just it. No achievement!
And in a PvP zone? It’s only to be expected that you’ll get encounters. I see it as part of the achievement.
Cry and whine all ya’ want, there’s nothing to do other than adapt or suck it up.

That does not work. Like I said, if you receive any damage at all, the stealth buff is gone. And these guys just constantly blindly spam aoe attacks on every platform that you have to jump on. So you will get hit, stealth is gone, and they kill you while you are still trying to jump your way up.
They also have warriors with zerg builds going up and down the scaffolding, while flailing their great sword around blindly to hit any stealthed players, who then instantly decloak on hit.
I have seen large zergs get vaporized trying to crush a small group of people camping the well. Because the advantage is that big, and it is the only way up. You will repeatedly get hit by immobilize, crippled, burning, chilled, due to there being no other way to go. Try platforming your way up while being hit by all that.
And lets not forget, they also have stealthed players waiting at the top of the well. So it may seem like only 6 players at first, but there could be 10 more cloaked players waiting to kill you.
And this isn’t the only place where you can do this. It works in the arena too. An enemy team can keep you constantly in-combat from the top of the arena, by spamming ranged attacks downward. Which means your movement is reduced, and you can’t make some of the jumps, even WITH a speed boost. And if by some miracle you do make it to the top, they can use a pull skill to pull you off the ledge and kill you instantly.

I can understand the frustration that some people get from this achievement. But really, is it so bad? The harder something is to get too, the more satisfaction you get from actually ACHIEVING that very thing.
Yes it is. I fail to see how constantly getting ganked by a superior number of players is supposed to challenge my skills? What exactly can I do to avoid that death when the jumping puzzle specifically forces you into spots that are easy to camp? Do tell me.
People speak about “challenge” and “difficulty” as if getting repeatedly killed by a group of enemies was some sort of challenge. The only real challenge in that puzzle is jumping. That is something you can control. It would also be challenging if it was 1 vs 1 PvP.
Compare this to Sanctum sprint. I enjoy it a lot even though the best spot I’ve held so far is third. It challenges me and is difficult but it’s fun. As are all PvP activities in general since they often equalize the playground by providing a) small areas, b) specific set of skills, c) teams or at least a situation where it’s one vs one or everyone vs everyone. Challenging but fun.
No amount of skill is going to let me avoid wandering gangs of enemies in obsidian sanctum sepcifically because there are spots which can be camped and which force you out of invisibility. 10 vs 1 is not challenging. It’s borderline griefing. This from a player who started with MUDs so people better not speak to me about “players these days” because I’ve played games longer than most and always thought that mindless ganking is far from challenging or fun.
The thing is, this game was specifically advertised and sold on the promise to PvE players that this was a game based on cooperation. No griefing would be allowed. In PvE every time someone tries to grief others, that is removed.
As an example, while the game was in beta, Mesmer portals would transport people if they went on the portal or if the portal was placed on them. You didn’t have to hit the F key to use it. Mesmers were using the portal to block the exit from Hoelbrak to the noob area. The new people would run up to the Asuran portal, hit a Mesmer portal and be ported away. I saw a couple of Mesmers who were amusing themselves by doing this. They were also targeting people who were af’k and porting them around. In response ANet made it so you had to agree to be ported.
In PvE ANet makes every effort to stop griefing and that’s what PvE players expect.
Now, all of a sudden. PvE players who want to continue the Living Story (which is PvE, not PvP) achievements are told to go to an area where other players are deliberately stopping them from getting the achievement. To them, it feels like ANet has broken their promise of cooperation and no griefing for PvEers. Yes, I know this is a PvP area and PvP happens in a PvP area. That’s not the point. The point is if you are a PvEer, doing PvE content (which was promised and advertised as no griefing) it shouldn’t be in an area that accepts griefing as a normal game play.
Don’t even get me or any of the other PVPers started on the things we’ve been promised or wanted since the game came out and have gotten nothing, or has taken months to fix HUGE issues example: culling, so sorry if we don’t really feel sympathy for any of you, deal with it, find a way around, or nut up and kill them. If not you don’t deserve the achievement…lastly if you go to WvW discussion Devon(WvW head) says that they put it their with the intent of it being somewhat challenging and the intent of people killing each other

You are mad because you didn’t get what you were promised. We are mad because we aren’t getting what we were promised. Maybe you should think about that instead of blaming PvEers for their troubles in getting this achievement. Maybe you should be mad at the people who broke their promises to us.
That’s the thing though this is one of the first things that you were “promised” and not given…been happening to us since release…the devs put the achievement there with the intent of what’s going on, you can get the meta without that kite, ever think maybe some WvWers who don’t really like PVE who like a kite too in our realm? Also most of your things are easily avoidable that you consider promises…lastly just because its living story doesn’t make it solely PVE they can make it what they want and guess what? They decided to throw in 1 tiny little WvW achievement

The OP’s post actually makes me like what this new content did to the game. here is a fight that would otherwise not take place that is happening because of content. If you step into WvW or like it at all, this is the EXACT reason you do it. You do it for fights like this.

Sooo if you got lied to a lot and we got lied to a little, it’s the PvEers problem and not both of ours?
I’m not the one complaining about this though now am I? So ya this is your problem which the devs have said they don’t see as one and wanted an achievement to be difficult to obtain...

Dev said they think this move will make more people like WWW (i rofled hard when i read it)
You read it badly. Forcing OCD completionists to subject themselves to open world PvP won’t make them like it. But having some people that didn’t try PvP yet get a hand at it and find they have fun doing it will.
Which is one of the reason there are achievements in the first place : to gently nudge players to try everything a game has to offer.
I understand that that might be ANet’s intention. It may even work in the case of some players. However, the JP ones specifically are more likely to reinforce negative perceptions of WvW than change negative perceptions to positive ones. The experience is more like being ganked on an open world PvP server in different games than it is like the consensual PvP in the rest of WvW.
It might be better to invent achievements with desirable rewards that entice people into regular WvW play (be it roaming or assault) than to try to entice people whose only interest in the zone is doing a puzzle.
I had this problem on Blackgate where people were camping the start of the jumping puzzle at the waypoint. I took all my armour off and was trying to do it and avoid getting armour damaged. They wouldn’t stop attacking us so we formed our group and said let’s sort them out. We kept beating them when we decided to fight them. They gave up and let us pass to the puzzle and I managed to get it done. I don’t really like PvP that much but if you’re going to have idiots camp then they need to be taught a lesson. I hope OP you manage to get it done or if it’s really that difficult that a truce can be made between the different worlds and the world you’re on. Just to get it done for those that don’t like WvWvW but are title obsessed.
