Q:

To avoid confusion, does this ceremony start at a specific time and do I have to be at a certain place to get the achievement? Is the achievement completed after watching the whole event or just for being there for part of it?

Also, will the effigy lighting actually take place at the start time or will it be linked to the daytime/night time server clock? I don’t mind not seeing the fireworks, but flaming dragon effigies sound like quite a sight, it’d be a shame to be AFK for it.

in the description it is stated that it is one-man instance (so something simmilar to personal story/Cannach story/etc, so you basically just hop in and see the thing just for yourself.
The real question is….it is stated it will be available on june 18th, but it donĀ“t state if this is available ONLY on 18th, or it just starts to be available on 18th and is there for next days too…would be good to know

Knowing Anet, it’s likely to hang around a while. At least until the 20th. I think it’s interesting that the ceremony will be a singleplayer instance.

There doesn’t appear to be an acheivement for the ceremony itself anyway, it’s for lighting the effigies.

Well IIRC they said that the ceremony will be the start of the next step in the Living Story, so I’m guessing it will be around for a bit

This thread is another fine example how greatly the Anet communicates with the fans. Honestly.. How hard is it to drop by and confirm such a thing?

They wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) have to clarify/confirm all these things if they had a competent and understandable way of communicating festival content to the players. With all the achievements, the exceptions (Dragonball achievements don’t count for the meta achievement), the specific dates of certain content, the limited time events within a limited time event (fireworks within the Dragon Festival) and the staggered release of things… it’s incredibly confusing to follow this stuff. It’s getting to the point where I feel I need to do more reading than playing to get a grasp of the monthly content patches.

Considering how inconsistent Anet themselves can be about these things, let’s just say it’s a secret to everybody.

Half the fun is figuring out what’s going on. Too much hand holding these days…in the MUD days they wouldn’t even announce additions smaller than a new continent, it was up to players to find it themselves.

The Effigy Lighting Ceremony is a single player instance, according to the blog post. There is no information about it being removed before the end of the event. And yes, there’s a reason it’s in an instance instead of the open world. Complete the instance to get the achievement (yes, there’s an achievement…no, it’s not the lighting 50 effigies one).

I actually thought that doing research online was an integral part of playing an MMO. In the days of growing up on Everquest we were lucky to have online access to maps with locations and co-oridantes that we could print out. Lazy, lazy, lazy, players who never had to play in four feet of snow with a Dial Up Connection…

Same here. :P

Best we could hope way back when was EQAtlas and Allakhazam/Caster’s Realm/Lucy being accurate. I was really into doing that research. I think it’s something that all games need to encourage in some form or another, with as little pain as possible. That, and adapting to whatever the devs throw at you. :P

I think most of today’s GW2 players couldn’t handle the MMOs of old such as EQ1, DAoC, etc, etc.

Couldn’t have said it better…makes perfect sense to me. Sometimes people mistake silence for not caring when in fact it’s because they don’t want to spoil everything for you. Not saying that everything Anet does is perfect, but c’mon people. Thanks Vahkris!

Bah. Carebear EQ players had it way easier than us UO players. Not only did we have dailup (for really reals), but we had people, like me, who would kill you and take all your stuff.

Or, more often because it was more challenging, “Thy gold or thy life, knave!”

Sadly, most of today’s GW2 players couldn’t even handle GW1. At least that’s what anet thought, thus the complete loss of the dual profession system and terribad “esports” pvp.

Honestly the dual profession system wasn’t that complicated, though I remember my ranger/assassin very fondly. What made it complicated and wonderful was the massive collection of skills and, oh man, I really miss that. GW2 needs new weapon and utility skills and I would love it if we earned them by going out into the world and completing really difficult pve content*. (I miss my signet of capture)

*And by completing really difficult pve content I mean doing something very hard 3-4 times successfully, not doing something really quite easy 30-40 times.

I’d love if they added both new weapons for the various professions and more elites (yes I miss my sig of capture too). But what I think would be really great would be to add “extra” skills to each weapon. Force auto attack to stay, but let us pick our 2-3 skills for our main out of a pool of say 8. And give us 5 skills for our off hand to choose from. (or the 2-5 skills for a 2H weapon).

I think that would add to the old feel of customization that gw1 had.

Though I’d still prefer bug/AI fixes before adding in new things.

And while the only MMOs I’ve played have been gw1 and 2, I’m not against hard games, but gw2 never really marketed itself as such, and while I miss gw1 I do enjoy gw2.

This is an extremely good idea. Unlockable (preferably through actually doing content, rather than just spending skill points) extra skills for all the weapons that players could switch out existing skills for. A great shout out to GW1 and extra horizontal progression all round. Hope a dev takes note of your idea!

Lulz…I was no “Carebear” thank you. I grew up on the Red server Vallon Zek (coin only loot). If you really had the “cajones’” you went for Rallos Zek (Item gank). UO was a tough platform. Good to see some of us “oldschoolers” around.

Heh, thanks. I think I posted this idea somewhere on the warrior fourms 4+ months ago (or at least I think I did). It’s the only way I’ve been able to think of to allow for the current weapon system to stay the same, but allow more customization a la gw1 style.

While I don’t pvp much at all. I’m sure it’ll add a lot more depth than just to see X class with Y weapon and already have a decent idea of their build (or to allow the same weapon in a dungeon or pve without having much overlap). The question is would it be better to have each number key have only 2-3 options or to have a pool to choose from for all keys. Personally I prefer the latter, but then you’d need to make sure that the skills are more balanced so you can’t have game breaking builds.

Yea, basically this. Of course, much more and more interesting skills are what I miss from gw1 too, but not only this but also something that was tied deeply in the dual profession system: the outstanding potential for growth.

Whenever new professions or skills for the different professions were released, I knew it was something I could potentially use for all my characters in different ways, and that feeling was awesome. GW2 hasn’t even gotten anything class related at all yet, and it certainly isn’t going to be that great – it can’t be because the base design will hold it back.

New professions and a few utility skills for the classes most likely, and we can be happy if we’ll even see any new weapons at all, that’s it. :-/

Wintermute, I think Wallaces idea is about the best Ive seen for achieving that feeling in GW2. At the moment because it seems like only more utilities, elites and heals could be added the potential for interesting combos is very limited but as soon as you have alternate skills you could individually swap in and out of your weapons you get a system that is much closer to GW1 and allows for the addition of many more skills that does not feel possible in GW2 atm.

Well, it’s starting, but I couldn’t finished it. Like I posted in the Game Bugs section, the game disconnected while I’m doing the instance, and only at that instance, since running around the rest of the game world seems to be fine.
