I’ve seen the many posts on both this forum and the Game Bugs forum reporting issues with the Assault Knights and I’d like to take a few minutes to respond to you all. We are certainly not ignoring the forums, the lack of red posts is because I have been running around trying to get the issues you report fixed as quickly as possible and I have not always had the time to follow up on your threads and let you know!

In regards to the Assault Knights, we are currently working on issues with:

  1. How the Knights distribute their rewards to Players
  2. Design and balancing tweaks to help the all around functionality of the Assault Knight events

I do not have an ETA on the fixes, but be assured, they are of top priority. More details on exactly what was changed will be in the patch notes of the future hotfix when we release the fixes for both issues.

I would also like to touch base on the Achievements for the Battle for Lion’s Arch Release, in particular:

  • Six Minutes to Knightfall
  • No More Tricks, Scarlet
  • In Tune
  • Bigger, But Not Faster

All of the Battle for Lion’s Arch achievements have been tested for their functionality and do unlock correctly; I have a few tips/notes for each:

Six Minutes to Knightfall

  • This is likely not awarding due to the way we are currently awarding participation and rewards. Once we fix the first two issues listed in this post, this achievement should be attainable for everyone who gets event credit for an Assault Knight in a map.

No More Tricks, Scarlet

  • This achievement requires a good deal of skill and awareness, make sure you are watching for the red telegraphs that show where the Holograms will fire next and make sure you do not run through any active scorch marks during the fight, good luck!

In Tune

  • This achievement is also a tricky one, I would recommend you disable your auto attack so that you are precisely controlling when you hit the holograms. Necros, Rangers, Mesmers; watch your minions, pets, clones, and phantasms, their damage counts against you if you are not attuned. Engineers, your turrets fall under that category as well. For all professions, I would recommend crafting your build based solely on damage your character does and not use any summons or sources of outside damage. Again, attention is critical, always be aware of your current attunement and the attunement of the hologram you are fighting.

Bigger, But Not Faster

  • This achievement also requires vigilant attention. Watch for the large red Extraction telegraph rings as a warning. Keep your dodges saved for this skill only. A good time to dodge is when you see the Knight jump up into the air; dodge sooner/later than that and you will miss the window and get hit by the Extraction attack.

I hope this post goes some way in helping you all progress through the Battle for Lion’s Arch content and I’d like to thank you all for posting in this forum. You all are invaluable in helping us to respond to issues that arises quickly as possible.

I would like to point out for “No More Tricks Scarlet” that after the scorch marks visual disappears the effect still stays for about 2 seconds even after the visual is gone. Ruining the achievement for people who move over it.

This has been tested by myself, and several others I know, and while it is “workaroundable” (is that a word…it is now…) with even more situational awareness than seems strictly necessary, it is a bit annoying.

Thank you very much for this post. It means A LOT to us, to know that you know what we have found in game & the emotion we go through.

That being said, I have 2 (optional) questions:
1. Any tips on how to currently qualify for loot from the knights?
2. Is it possible to hear some ideas that have gone around the office of what is to come?

Thank you again for this post!

Edit: Compensation is not a personal issue to me. Getting the event to working as intended is a much higher priority to me.

Will you be retroactively rewarding people that have grown sick of this and given up on this update with their achievements and champ bags?

Also, for those that might come back once things are fixed in terms of rewards, achievements and actual game stability will you be extending this final chapter of the Living Story?

I also would like to know if there will be compensation since this No Loot bug has been going on for 1/3 of the event time.

Of course… working on a (pulls 2 numbers from magicians hat!) 1:5 ratio we can expect to see some Power Cores distributed in the mail accordingly can we then?? .. so my 15ish sets of knights thus far wont be wasted time and effort.. I mean I don’t expect to get power cores every time I make a significant contribution to dissing the knights but to get only 2 loot drops (zero cores) total from what 45 knights is no fun at all… guess I got more chance of seeing a flying pig though!!

I like the extending idea…

We have, what, less than 10 days to get 10 of the same power core if we want to upgrade ONE backpiece?

Each event only takes place once an hour, and if you fail to kill all 3 Knights… You may or may not get a core, even when it was working.

I’d certainly hope that ANet sends out mail with a few power cores. “From Ellen Kiel: I found these on the ground after the Assault Knight battle. Figured you might know what to do with them.”

  • This achievement requires a good deal of skill and awareness, make sure you are watching for the red telegraphs that show where the Holograms will fire next and make sure you do not run through any active scorch marks during the fight, good luck!

The main problem with this achievement, afaik, is that sometimes you’re ported to Breachmaker when the fight is already ongoing, and instantly die due to spawning on “scorch mark”, so achievement fails from the very beginning.

I think this is a bona fide bug with the scorch attacks. I’ve been trying to warn folks, but it makes the ach that much harder to get. Especially during the ultraviolet phase. Combine that with the teleporting in and immediately being scorched and it makes it very frustrating.

Disclosure – I got both of these achs last night.

Is it true that in order to get the attunement achievement you must not go down?

[eta] I’d also like to add that the attunement achievement SUCKS for rangers, because passive only works about 3/4 of the time. I have to spam ‘come to me’ throughout battles. That’s no fun.

I managed to get all achievements except the 6 Minutes one. They’re challenging, sure, but they are achievable. Here’s some tips:

It should also be noted that casting a long lasting AoE field can screw this up too. If you cast it just before the buff runs out, the field damage WILL count as damaging the Hologram without the buff and thus you can’t get the achievement anymore.

For the “No More Tricks” achievement, what screws this up the most is the same issue as Warden 3 in the Marionette fight. If the people who port in engage the fight while people are still porting, The Hologram will start its attack pattern and thus lay down the first lazer beams, which hit the spawn spot. One way to avoid this is to DODGE into the Prime teleporter. You may get moved right next to the spawn spot and thus out of the way of the lazer.

I am hoping for a quick fix for the “no loot” issue for the Knights though. It’s pretty annoying not getting any loot and missing out on a lot of chances to get cores. Please also make sure that the chosen solution does not reward the people who AFK’d on the map, the AFK’ers in the Breachmaker are annoying enough as is.

…In regards to the Assault Knights, we are currently working on issues with:

  1. How the Knights distribute their rewards to Players…

What rewards? there is currently no rewards at all to any player, that is the issue.

I think a 10 second invulnerability when teleporting in would be a solid solution as well since she very well may have fired at someone standing by that door.

Nope, you can go down. Just keep checking time for attunement, you can do it. And be very careful when holo splits into 3. Be sure to use correct attunement for it and for its adds if they will spawn. (If there are lot of adds of different kind and you had perfect score till now, avoid hitting as long as you see progress is not endangered, instead try helping people that are waiting for rez for the time being). In the final form of holo do not shoot at the big one. It will ruin your achivement. Be sure to shoot only at small copies (doesn’t matter what attunement you use at this point but in case you accidentaly swap the Prime attunement to one of others in final phase make sure that you have one attunement, you still have to have one and these that you “pick” from the ground doesn’t last for long). Good luck.

Also, good to see ar eply to No loot bug.

That was another think I meant to mention, thank you for reminding me, Nighthawk. The Assault knights were intended to be a fight that players had to split up and fight at the same time, it is one of the issues we are currently looking at. The Scarlet Holo fight begins 5 minutes after the first Knight’s death; originally, this was not an issue because a map divided into groups of three would take down the Knights within 5 minutes of each other. However, with recent player tactic changes, the first Knight is dying as much as 10 minutes before players get up to the Breachmaker, meaning that you will portal up into an active fight, possibly die before you load in, and you can lose time on the Scarlet Holo Fight timer. We are working on ways to make sure that players will have much less risk to portal up to an in progress fight.

For the time being, I encourage you to encourage your fellow players to wait to kill the first Knight until a time where the other two Knights are closer to death. If you can get the Prime attunement in under 5 minutes from the first Assault Knight’s death, you will portal up to a grace period and you will have some time to load in and prepare yourself before the Prime Hologram begins her onslaught. Again, it is an issue we are aware of and should improve with the Assault Knight fixes.

I just want to point this out, part of the reason servers started killing the bosses 1 at a time is because of the extra loot, and with many people getting many if not all of the achievements done I don’t see people wanting to continue the event after all the bugs, crashes, etc that are happening if we will only be able to get the champ boxes from 1 knight(if you make it harder to zerg them down 1 by 1).

Edit: Although I say this…I have a feeling I will continue to do this event every so often because it is by far my favorite “open world” event that has been put into the game so far. It seems to be in the right place between needing 100+ people on a mumble server to even attempt to do it and 100 people just pressing the 1 key and afking. The first thing I said to my guildies was “IT HAS MECHANICS AWESOME!”.

I think that when you guys fix the no-loot issues, the knights should just drop 1 Core all the time. It’s hard enough as-is to get 10 cores of 1 color with them having a chance to drop, especially when we’ve been having inconsistent (or no) loot as well ever since this event started.

I have 5 characters with the back item, but there’s no way I can manage to get even 10 cores or any single color unless I pay lots of gold to TP-flippers (and I refuse to do that).

But anyhow, like many people suggested I would like to see an extension to the time to farm these cores. Given the drop rate isn’t all that high and you need like 10 of each core to make one of each BP.

I’ve never seen the event succeed when players split to take down multiple knights at the same time. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m usually on overflows so coordination and communication is not always good. Also, it seems to take ages to defeat some of the knights because half of the players end up spamming conditions and dying.

I’m looking forward to the update. It’s a bit disappointing to finally kill the knights and get no loot, even with gold participation.

Not to be glib, but as a long time D&D GM, this is a page out of Encounter Design 101:

“A player alone is merely creative. Players working together are devious and WILL break your encoutner.”

Believe me, I welcome the changes in the LS encounters that are forcing people to think and be strategic, but the PvE meta does not lend itself to that. To wit, leveling from 1-80, running dungeons, and the QD & FSG champ trains all encourage “stack and spank”. As a QA team, you had to have considered that given the carrot of a potential 15 champ bags that folks were going to find a way to get credit for all three.

I wish you the best of luck and success in coming up to a quick and fair solution to this.

But then again, players joining mid-fight shouldn’t be punished by loading into a danger zone. The player spawn location on Breachmaker should be a safe location.

Also, there is no excuse in such a late reply to a critical problem in the ongoing Living Story event. As someone already pointed out, it doesn’t take long to type a short post to let the players know that 1) This is most certainly a bug (instead of a feature) and it is under investigation, and 2) when will there be a patch that fixes the issue.

I should probably just switch to a different character for this.

For a limited time event, looting 15 champ bags PER HOUR is not a huge deal… Don’t give them ideas to even take this away… This is the finale of season 1, they need to be generous a little bit…

Is it even possible for a mesmer to do this? I mean basically no illusions can be out whatsoever during the entire fight.

Has any mesmer done this? (If so you should get a special medal or something)

My main is a ranger. The only class that HAS to have a pet in combat (it can’t be hidden). I swear I’ve dodged correctly for “No More Tricks, Scarlet”, but if my pet gets hit does that count against me? Like for the Canach mission?

I should probably just switch to a different character for this.

Ranger is indeed “not optimal” to get the achievements with. Even with your pet on passive the entire fight to get “In Tune”, if it strays too close to a lazer or the remains, you fail to get the achievement..

I think “In Tune” is basically and practically requiring players to land a few hits on the few hologram at the start and then stop contributing damage for the rest of the fight.

a shard of crystal in the desert.

As a result of this level of difficulty to get scarlet’s achievements, it encourages people to just afk at the front and back where they won’t get hit with anything. When achievements encourage you to not take part its.. really.. counter-intuitive.

The Assault knights were intended to be a fight that players had to split up and fight at the same time

I really wish Arenanet would make this clear by making a tutorial video before the patch even goes live. It would save players from SO much hostility in map chat. I do like trying to figure things out for myself but, not in a hostile environment.

And yes, it seemed perfectly clear we were to split into 3 groups. The portals right next to the Knights was a big enough sign

Oh, while I might have your eye’s for a moment, maybe a video covering the importance of food, utility, and stacking buffs please? The majority of players I’ve been in zone with today haven’t had any. With a DPS check like the Knights, I figured players would know to come ready to hit hard but, I don’t think players care enough or simply know enough about the mechanics of foods and utilities beyond magic find. That everyone knows well it seems.

Thank you for working on this. I’m looking forward to an update and fix for the Knights loot. Also, crossing my fingers someone turns up the drop rate on cores to make up for the lost time. wink.. wink.. nudge, nudge

Honestly, with how easy it is to drop the Knights, the best way of getting the Bigger, but not Faster achievement is to simply wait until they first use the attack, go in and DPS them a bit, than run to max range, wait for the attack again, and repeat.

There’s zero reason to stay in range of the attack and pray you don’t mess up a dodge. Just play conservatively, DPS quick and run out, and let the mass zerg who either have the achievement, or don’t want it, do the majority of the DPS for the boss.

The same can be said about In Tune. If you’re after this Achievement, you should really only bother to DPS during the Prime Hologram Phase, and the Large Colored Hologram phase, and even than, you should be DPSing very conservatively.

Turning off auto-attack is a very smart idea, and you should be keeping an eye on the duration of the buff, stopping your DPS a good 5-10 seconds before the buff runs out to ensure you don’t accidentally hit the boss.

You won’t want to DPS period once the first mini-holograms start to appear, as one wrong Aoe or mistimed attack can break the achievement for you.

You’re going to need to kitten your DPS for this achievement, so there’s no reason to try to go all out and do mass DPS if you’re after it. Again, let the Zerg do most of the work for you, and just help when you can.

Obviously once the final phase starts, you can DPS as you wish, as you no longer have to worry about color matching anymore, but for the first two phases of the fight, you should be DPSing conservatively, and not using anything other than single target, non-dotting abilities.

That and the chest at the end of the holo fight, don’t forget.

I am not suggesting they get rid of it. I am saying that it is short sighted to design that as the reward for the encounter and then be surprised that folks aren’t “fighting the Knights the way we intended them too.” One does not necessarily preclude the other. That said, now that the loot cat is out of the bag, they will have to walk a fine line to restore order and still provide incentive reward.

If I had to shoot the hip, and wanted to control the zerg ball, I would use distance (like with the triple wurm), force fields (like with the marionette), or both.

This is important to note. In GW1 there were non-rendered cut scenes and OSD info that would guide you through mission objectives. In this event, consider:

1.) You run through the portal to LA for the first time and are given a scouting report that you cannot skip.

2.) The report shows the map of LA and explains:

  • The location of the generals with recon that might explain their weakness (See: The yelling in mapchat when people fight the cannoneer and the zerg beats on him for 30m instead of dragging him into the laser)
  • Location of the miasma events with a note to take them down simultaneously for large rewards
  • A report of large monstrous watchwork knights in key locations that must be brought down simultaneously.

This avoids people yelling at each other in map chat, provides a “baseline” strategy that all players are exposed to, and sets a “plot device” to explain mechanics. It is a fine line to walk between hand holding and creative encounter mechanics.

No More Tricks, Scarlet

  • This achievement requires a good deal of skill and awareness, make sure you are watching for the red telegraphs that show where the Holograms will fire next and make sure you do not run through any active scorch marks during the fight, good luck!

What if the pet is on passive? It still takes damage.

In Tune

This would be real easy if I could perma-stow my pet. Just sayin.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

In the overflow, visited all 3 Knights & there were only 2 others about.a major issue that needs to be resolved a bit quick.LS is only as good as it’s tested. The various bugs show a lack of that from anet which just annoys people and reduces the pull of LS.A poor show.

There’s a guild challenge in which you have to kill 3 bosses within the same time window that works perfectly to split up the ‘zerg from one to the other’ tactic. It makes coordination very important and creates a much more interesting fight.

I was really hoping that was the case with the knights but it’s not. I’ve tried suggesting in map chat that we split up and take them all down at once but unfortunately mine is a tiny voice in a storm of “BLUE>GREEN>RED!!!”.

See An overflow actually tried this. I swear the overflow was full and everyone came to participate and the groups were split evenly but there was just not enough damage going on per Knight.

The scaling on the knights is horrible. The only time I’ve come close to 6 minutes was the blue green red zerg and we were off by 1 minute.
